It lets you delay getting the candles and/or get them early.
Normally, without a helpful calling card, the optimal route is to get arthur’s at 25- despite how it’s unlocked at 21- destin’s at 26- despite how it’s unlocked at 24- and cerise’s at 27, if you aren’t using marsh mired and dealing with absurd waits. Getting the candles used to be the cheapest option, but once you can access winking isle, 1 level SMEN is 1 level SMEN- you aren’t missing out on anything anymore by getting the levels either earlier or later. [Prior to that point, the costs increase in a fashion you could construe as exponential, and each level is more expensive than the last.]

Alexis has posted clues having something to do with the the story and how you navigate it. And in traditional Alexis fashion they are about as clear as an obsidian window smeared with paint. I can’t really make sense of this yet but maybe I’m just now far enough into Seeking yet? I’ll be interested to see if anyone else knows what’s going on here.
I’m not very far along in my path to self-destruction yet, but… One and five seem linked—five specifically calls to mind a Fate-locked option I’ve experienced with my Decommissioned Steamer. On number three, Ravens are a bird of prey, and you can hatch them in Fallen London, but I’m not entirely certain how one would manage staggered hatchings or what effect they might have in regards to Seeking. I don’t think my own Mystic Raven Advisor has offered any new clues, at least.
The rest is, I fear, lost on me.

Staggered hatching birds of prey: the older hatchlings will consume their younger and weaker siblings. See e.g. http://www.jstor.org/stable/4081778
What’s this now?

I would assume 2 refers to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mithridatism the practice of ingesting small amounts of poison to develop a tolerance to it. How that relates mechanically is beyond me, but I’m only Seeking 3.
5 presumably refers to the requirement to give up your ship before sailing North, which I think we already knew was a thing.
6 sounds like a huge lore bomb unless we already knew the Treacheries had done something in Vienna, and to White in Frostfound. Also from my second hand knowledge, I didn’t think we knew the White had ever been to the Neath, much less Frostfound. I thought that was Salt, and I thought he was a servant of the White, not the White himself.
I notice that this quote from winking isle mirrors the text from the decommissioned steamer. Specifically:
"Mortal, machine. The heart is destiny’s engine."
The two together would seem to indicate there is some link between Seeking and the journey east. We also know that in Sunless Sea you need "Salt’s Song" to journey east.
Mithridatism certainly sounds like the correct link there. The process of Seeking has a lot to do with suffering ever increasing hardship. The process of Seeking could be interpreted as necessary to build up an immunity to whatever you meet when you go NORTH so you can survive long enough to do… something.
This sounds like it could be a reference to the difference between advancing using The Seeking Road versus the long slow Unaccountably Peckish route.
I’m planning on taking Restitution for the Drowned Man this week as my Marsh-Mired option. I’ll be attempting to record the Melancholy CP and cap if I hit it. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to do anything about Heartless as I have none.
I can confirm that it will get you as high as 12. It will be interesting to see if it can take you further though. It might be the new best way to grind sadness.

[spoiler] I assumed that 2 has something to do with the Presbyterate’s Mithradate Office, which spreads disinformation. There’s a link to Salt from colonizing Aestival, and also to the White, given 6 and the guy you find in the South.
For 6 proper, I understood it as a reference to the characteristic of the Neath and Frostfound in particular which compresses and confuses identities?
Any ideas for internal architecture, or sand?

Ah, that’s good. That’s what I thought when I asked earlier; it would only make sense as you need a value in that sweet spot between the usual cap and what polishers can touch. The wiki still needs CP values, so I’m aiming to provide a data point every week if I can.
Edit: Hmm, so I went up to 6 CP out of 10 needed for the next level of Melancholy. I’m at level 9 going to level 10. I think I was at 2 or 3 CP to start based on how far the bar was filled. I couldn’t check initial CP by loading the Quirk into a profile slot. Does anyone know how you go about checking current CP besides remembering what it is between action results?

As there have been a huge amount of revelations and updates lately, and I want to preserve at least some mystery for myself, I’m going to reduce my presence in these threads for the next while. I’ll check back in when I’ve gotten as far as I hope to…
It’ll be time soon, and I have waited so long.
A reckoning is not to be postponed indefinitely.
I can’t help poking in once in a while, but I’ve also been avoiding spoilers until I return from sea to Zeek — sorry, from zee to Seek. I wonder if approaching it blind means I’ll do myself more harm by choosing the wrong options, or less harm by progressing through the pain at a slower pace. The strange paradox of optimizing masochism.
Since I have begun Seeking, I have become three or four times as hungry as normal, have been experiencing computer problems, have been filled with inexplicable rage and depression at odd moments.
Seeking is starting to affect me in real life. Please take warning, those who Seek the Name.

My alt has begun Seeking, but in light of some of the revelations of this week, is like to take a long time to complete her journey.
hey, deep congrats to bjorn and all you other seekers who are close to going to space and getting obliterated forever! you’re all the best and i hope the ending is entirely amazing/suffering!

Side effects also includes dreaming of the Name.
I’m going to take a likely guess on what happens at the end of Seeking; you end up opening the gates to let The White through. Also, it seems possible, though not necessarily probable, that The White, The Red, and The Gold might refer to types of stars rather than individuals.

Those of you who are well-versed in psychology may suggest that I am in a depressive downswing, but you are just fools who know not the Hunger.
