Does anyone know what to think of Alexis’s profile? He has an item called The Seven-Fold Knock (Description: You might have open the Gate. You did not.). Do you think that will be part of some reward for completing SMEN (possibly for those who chose the Grieve option at SMEN 12 and want to remember Mr Eaten rather than start a reckoning) or is it probably just Alexis continuing to troll players even after he’s left Failbetter? Honestly, knowing him, the latter would not surprise me.

While zailing, the destination NORTH unlocks if you do not have The Seven-Fold Knock. And the description for that destination hints that it might be reached either through SMEN or the Dilmun club storylines.
Presumably the seven fold knock is used to open the gate at Avid Horizon?

So, how exactly does free of the name work? Does it forever lock you out of Seeking? Can it be lost with betrayal? How does betrayal work anyway? Can you otherwise lose it? I know there were a couple of rare options to lose Free of The name a long time ago.

I know that it was said before, but I can’t find it. What are the safe Marsh Mired options? My TTH is tomorrow, and I wish to plan accordingly for it.
Also, which ones do not have confirmed SMEN caps yet? I assume that that it is UP = 3x the SMEN level cap.
I guess it depends on what you consider "safe" :-)
The wiki seems to have more info now for the UP cards.
Most Marsh-Mired options seem to give at least some menaces (some points of Wounds and/or Nightmares) as is to be expected.
The cards up to FOUR OF EYES seem to also bring more penalties when using to increase SMEN (loss of stats, or connections). However, the cards from FIVE OF LIGHTS upwards seem pretty OK to use.
Four of Eyes is definitely one to be avoided. I decided to return to Seeking (why, why, why?) and used the Marsh-Mired option on that card, only to lose a fair bit of Connections and gain a bunch of menaces.
I was Free of the Name and was able to get back into Seeking through the option in the Forgotten Quarter. The Unaccountably Peckish cards didn’t show up until I did this.

The ACE OF HUNGERS, SEVEN OF WORDS, KNAVE OF REGRETS, and KNIGHT OF FEASTS all contain marsh-mired options that don’t menace you. And yes, while I don’t think we have explicit testing on all the caps for these cards the pattern has been that the caps are equal to 3*<reuired UP>. So if your at 0-2 you can use the first one. Otherwise you’re looking for 7, 8, or 9.
What are some good sources of UP? I’m mostly progressing through Marsh-Mired options, but in between TtH I like to be able to actually draw cards, which means my hand can’t be entirely full of Seeking cards, so it would be convenient if I could lower my UP and then raise it again when I need it. I recently accidentally lowered it to 0 playing non-Marsh Mired options on black bordered cards and had to send a starveling cat back and forth with someone to get back up to the point where I could continue to Seek. Any better suggestions?
If you have a Starveling Cat check out the Flit’s Cats and Bats storylet - there is an option to use your cat there.
If you want to lower UP try eating something in the 2nd Coil of the Labyrinth of Tigers.
A fun method of raising UP by 1 is to use a Counterfeit Head, which also raises every Seeker’s favourite nightmare, Death by Water. If you have a mature plant, you can easily collect a stack of heads.
An alternative method of lowering UP is sending Lyme to the market. It can remove 3 points of UP and I find it more convenient than having to navigate back up to the first coil in the Labyrinth, as I like to feed seals to giant bats.
What are thoughts on grieving vs hating? I’m just about to make the choice and I’m wondering what theories are out there about content paths here?
Personally, I would rather Grieve than Hate, but I don’t know how to get my Melancholy high enough.
Both my Heartless and Melancholy are at 0, and I don’t have a Bazaar Tear, so I guess that I’m going to zee to watch zailors drown for a while.
Haters are gonna Hate.
Well, either way you’re going to need to have one to get to the isle- meaning it is outright locked until you have one. So that, and the fact that it’s easier now, means the majority will likely choose to hate. Greiving might be easier, harder, or neither in the long run, but it’s known that you’ll need one to make the climb feasible past a certain point.

If you want to Grieve, and don’t want to use Tears - you can raise it above 10 by going to the Forgotten Quarter (I think you might need to do this before your Soul is in too bad a shape though because Grant Hunt? I’m hiding from the zone now…) and the ‘Old Bones’ card with your Daughter raises it inside the Cave of the Nadir. It’ll take 4-5 goes of the card to hit 12, but quite doable - is how I went about it :)

Assuming, of course, you have that fatelocked story. If you don’t… well…
I also don’t have a Daughter.
There is also the third question value “Who is Salt?” which we don’t understand yet. If it’s even obtainable, it might be from a late stage of the quest (i.e. while NORTH) or might be obtainable sooner if you don’t have an answer at higher SMEN than when the first two options appear.
Or it might be obtainable if you try to go to winking island without an answer. I mean, that is a thing you can do with a good ally or support network.
