Second-Round Playtesters: Iced Oolong

Another screenshot, this time from our Gunslinger grind. The Wall Market is Amarillo’s frontier-style answer to the great American supermarket: a sprawling cussing raucous bazaar where barter is the norm and dollars the exception.

I’d love to be a part of this if you’re still accepting beta users.

@rosemirror:

We certainly are! :)

No promises, but we’re hoping to have some new content out this weekend. (Specifically the Day 1/Morning installment, which is ~50 Storylets and ~500 Actions worth of playtime.)

An update on ICED OOLONG:

We’ve locked down the Opening content in preparation for a major revamp and our first content release. Those will be going live soon – hopefully this weekend. Look forward to an email from the ICED OOLONG in the very near future!

If you want to be one of the first people to play through our new content, please leave your character name and email address in this thread. We’d love to have you involved!

In the meantime, we’ll keep on previewing content. Today’s Storylet will give you a glimpse of Ashling the Witch, one of the oddest characters in the Amarillo cast. Where she came from – and what she’s up to – are unclear. But like Absolom she’s around and about, always happy to lend a hand, although her help mostly comes in the form of Tarot draws. Rumor has it she’s also into palmistry and something with tea leaves, but with the Ashling, it’s hard to say. She remains an attractive mystery at best and a cautionary tale at worst. Where does her interest in the Protagonist fit in? You’ll have to pull a card to find out!

I’m proofreading before the content is even released! :)

That, as a wise man once said, is the way to do it. :)

@Little:

You’re absolutely right! There was a third descriptor in there. I cut it at the eleventh hour and didn’t tidy up properly. Thanks!

NOTE TO ALL PLAYERS:

Please be aware that we will soon be wiping out all existing characters. This is to accommodate new architecture and choices in the Opening.

This is the ONLY TIME we will be wiping characters; from here on out, it’s all live.

If you have questions, comments, concerns or feedback, please feel free to ask away!

Consider me very much interested.

For your Friday preview, a look at our Cityslicker grind. One of our staff writers designed the early Cityslicker grind to give players a look at the different ways people socialize in Amarillo. Early on, players have the opportunity to drink local beer at an “old-timey” saloon which the locals have long since reclaimed; in the sample today, the Protagonist successfully makes contact with the destitutes outside the Highrise Hotel, a former Section 8 apartment which now hosts everyone from the broken men and women (see below) to more sinister and organized elements.

We anticipate having something fun to share with our beta testers this weekend, so make sure your name and email are posted here…!

Uh… was Zero Summer a working title for Iced Oolong, or is it something we’ll find out later?

Oh goodness. What a leak that must be.

:)

Just out of curiousity, if you are wiping all of the characters, then do you really need our character name for the second-run playtest? I don’t mind either way, I am just easily fascinated by stuff.

@Katherine:

There was a line of thinking that went something like, “We really need to set everybody’s Beta Tester Quality. Gosh, doesn’t that mean we should ask for their character names?”

That line of thinking didn’t intersect with the one that went “if we’re going to test out the Opening, we really need to wipe all the characters out first.”

In retrospect: no, we don’t really need your character names. Although we will quite soon need your NEW character names, which we’ll request via the email addresses we collected and actually very much DO need. Look for something from us over the next couple of days!

I quite look forward to seeing it. I am extremely excited about the tidbits you have released so far, and quite curious to see what that play tester quality unlocks in the future ^__^

I’d suggest that unless there’s more than one way to lose Rumors, “What People Are Saying” should be locked by Rumors instead of unplayable without it. How do you get Rumors anyway?

@James:

Thanks for the catch! We’re still getting the kinks out of our first three subplots, and not all of them are properly entry-locked. It shouldn’t even be visible to you yet! :)

Rumors is one of the controlling Qualities used in that subplot.

(FYI: “Whispers” is going to hang around until the PC wipe, as Nigel mentioned, and then be undrawable if you have any Rumors.)

ATTN TESTERS:

We’re having a serious bug with our “Rules of the Game…” Storylets.

I’m looking for someone to test a clone of one of them to see if we can diagnose the problem. Please reply here if you’re interested. Thanks!

EDIT:

The problem is persistent, but we have the help we need to diagnose it. Thanks!
