Reaching 50 Renown

I’ve managed to get my renown in both Criminals and The Docks up to 47, but now I’ve hit the limits of what my Shadowy and Dangerous gear coupled with a mood card can accomplish. If I had the appropriate POSI quality I could get the requisite stat bump by cashing in Nobility via An Unsigned Message, but I’m an Extraordinary Mind, so that won’t work (unless there’s a way to change POSI qualities I’m unaware of?). So, does anyone have a solution? Or is this currently a hard limit for people with the wrong POSI quality?

I’m aware that at least one person used an exploit whereby they raised their Dangerous to astronomical levels by playing Flint repeatedly, but 1) I’m not sure if that exploit has been closed or not and 2) I’m not laying down the money necessary to play Flint repeatedly. I’m happy to pay a little fate if there’s a way to do this that requires it, but that’s a bit much.

It’s currently a hard limit, unfortunately. Hopefully there will one day be a way to switch PoSI specialization or sufficiently better gear. Or even better, maybe one day there’ll be a Renown revamp to reduce this grindy approach of throwing Favours and rare equipment at the problem.

(And yeah, NiteBrite used Flint to get their base Dangerous to something like 285, but that got fixed at some point.)

That’s what I thought. Now I’ve got to figure out what to do with the two Mood cards sitting in my hand…

Here are a few grindable options that scale with attributes:

Stealing from a drunk rat in Spite will give you Shadowy/2 Surface Currency. It depends on your Someone is Coming-quality, though, so it only makes sense to use the mood if that is sufficiently high.

The Chandleress in Watchmaker’s Hill will give (0.4 * Dangerous + 30) Lamplighter Beeswax. It’s not super profitable but with high Dangerous it’s the best source for Beeswax. So if you want to advance the Liberation of Night or just really like Beeswax, this is also an option for a mood.

Gooday,

Linking in an oblique manner to the Renown system, do you esteemedly knowledgeable chaps and chappettes know why it began? It seems to bring more grind to the Connections mechanic, without necessarily improving things…

Mechanically, it adds more things to do with connections. I know I actually use their cards now.

It’s generally agreed they kinda dropped the ball storywise though. Ostensibly the renown system is supposed to let you have a permanent attribute representing your relation to the faction. In reality it’s only raised through a handful of non-story actions so it feels like a grind completely disconnected from your RP actions.

This thread is the initial exegesis for the Favors/Renown system.

http://community.failbettergames.com/topic20369-favours-and-renown.aspx

tl;dr

The Connected system was serving two uses: A spendable resources, and an unlock requirement. FBG felt that it was too awkward to use one value for both uses. Additionally, people didn’t spend their connections enough and preferred to stockpile, which meant that absurdly high Connected values represented only tangential interest over a long period.

The decided to split Connected into Favors and Renown. Favors are meant to be spent quickly. Renown represents deep and long-term association, and also never decreases. Both are also capped: Favors hard-capped at 7, Renown soft-capped around 50 (possibly hard-capped as well). Since release, FBG has also decided to unlock equipment at certain Renown levels.

The new system is very different from the old one, so there are a lot of differences and tradeoffs. People have strong opinions. I wouldn’t pretend to cover that in a tl;dr.

Gooday,

Why thank thee kindly for the enlightenment -just what I expected from such wise creatures such as yourselves! Most appreciated.

Was in chat talking about this just the other day.

Watchful factions can be gotten to 50 with “lots of work”.

The other 3 stats are harder.

Dangerous is ONE POINT SHORT. But might be solved by the change to marriage increasing the value of the ring by even one point. But this does require you to have “the knife” and a few other things.

Shadowy, with perfect equipment, fate only items, being a midnighter, the right destiny, and a mood… oh, and some of those fate items are ones most people don’t have, including exotic ones from valentines and previously useless ones from christmass…

Persuasive, not even close, way, WAY off, even taking specalisation won’t do it.

With POSI specialization, all 4 stats can be raised enough for Renown 50, even before the latest stat buffs.

Persuasive’s current cap is 292. With specialization, this can be 307 - enough for Renown 52.

From an old thread:

And if someone can point to the statement which informs us that not all qualities/stats are equally powerful. Oh, and the fact that choices matter and should have an impact is pretty self explanatory by the game (even by homepage).

It’s really this easy: make a choice and live with it; otherwise there would just be the same thing everywhere, but with a different name.

means I’ve read it wrong, I tend to do that, thank you for the correction.

I don’t think anyone in this thread is complaining. We are just discussing what is possible and what isn’t. I for one appreciate the deliberate asymmetry of the game.

well, there might be a touch of complaint in a place or two, but I’d put up with many complaints (and many many more of my own) just to have that level of … a syncronoouse gameplay? … no, not quite the right word… balanced, but in different ways?

Asymetric game design, that’s the concept.

(I could have looked up one post, heh)

I love having choises matter in this game, even if I am sometimes tempted to grumble when it falls inconvient to me…

… but then you make offers to me to spend fate and let me change my fate, and that makes me pleased, and you … well, less poor.

I have wondered why the high-end reward for Renown is available at 40, instead of at the value cap of 50. I’m glad that it is 40, because I have Renown in the 30s in a bunch of Factions and having the target be 40 is much easier to achieve, but it does seem a bit odd to me.

Reaching Renown 50 is virtually impossible for some factions without using excessive amounts of Fate. The idea seems to be to give players more alternatives to the Fate-locked best in slot equipment, so making some of them require Fate would be silly.

Also, apparently 50 isn’t the cap. It’s just the max that you get from the auto-conversion. If you can push the relevant base quality high enough you can reportedly raise Renown above 50.

This is only possibly with the right POSI specialization (or using Flint to overcap Dangerous).

Interesting. Thanks for the information!

How does one get Persuasive to 292? I currently max at 280 with a Mood, although I imagine I could get to 286 by changing my Destiny and Spouse. I don’t see the way to 292, though.

Just by using all the highest Persuasive gear, really. If I had to guess, you’re missing the highest Persuasive home comfort item, the drinks cabinet. That gives a +6. Other out-of-the-way Persuasive gain items are being a member of the Parantheum, owning a salon, and the Heartwood Hearse transport that you can give out for fate during the Feast. All of those together is worth +5, though given the Persuasive you claim to have, it’s likely you have all of these already.
