Patch Notes

This was meant to be posted Friday, apologies for the delay.

20 November

- The card ‘The Mechanics of Progress’ will no longer appear for players who have begun the University storyline.
- The card ‘The Soft-Hearted Widow’ now gives a slightly scaling amount of Making Waves.

- The card ‘A Past Benefactor’ now gives 1 CP of Someone is Coming.

- Changed the meta text the branches to construct two of the Burrow statues.
- The card for the Memento Mori statue at Burrow-Infra-Mump now has its intended chance of a rare result (Was erroneously 3%).

Thank you for the update, and for cleaning up with the old cards.

Is there a way to get Doc Schlomo back? After all, he was quite useful at reducing nightmares, even for high-level-players.

And, just in case anyone wants one of her or his or its transports back, there´s a way through the parabolan lab to retrieve all of them.

I’ll miss The Mechanics if Progress. It’s lucrative for a long time for a well-established character even if it’s probably not strictly optimal, by a small margin, for an end-gamer.

Delayed from Friday:

27 November

- The icons for the Well-Placed Pawn and Stalemate have been changed to differentiate them from other Great Game items.
- The cards ‘God’s Editors at Burrow-Infra-Mump’ and ‘Under the Statue at Jericho Locks’ have been slightly buffed.

- If you have finished For All the Saints Who From Their Labours Rest and don’t wish to wait for the Feast of the Exceptional Rose, you can use Fate to get the Intrepid Deacon at the Burrow church when choosing a Deacon.

-We’re making a prequel to Fallen London! Mask of the Rose, a romantic visual novel set in 1862. Read more about it on our blog.

11 December 6.4.12

- It should no longer be possible to get to 0 Time Remaining at Helicon House without actually leaving.
- Grabbing biscuits on the way out of Helicon has been adjusted slightly down; now gives 5 crates of biscuits (previously 6) and 4 venison marrow (previously 2).
- The statue of Sinning Jenny now gives an additional 3 thirsty bombazine scraps and a lower-value bundle of oddities which will no longer generate nothing but Blemmigan Secretaries. The statues of the Clay Highwayman and the Gracious Widow have been similarly adjusted.
- Fixed an issue causing the option to build the Statue of Southwark to take away the old, exponentially-scaling amount of Hinterland Scrip even though it only required the new, linear-scaling amount.
- You can now send a Christmas Card from your Social Engagements, rather than your Lodgings.
- Whisper-Satin scraps now no longer take a Favour to upconvert, and Thirsty Bombazine now takes a Favour to upconvert.
- Map gate storylets with many branches (e.g., SNOWBOUND!) no longer overflow on wide screens.
- Beginning a dive in the Magistracy basement now requires Nightmares < 6 and Wounds < 6 (was 1 and 1).

Very delayed batch of patch notes, apologies! Neathmas ate them and I found these as I was putting away the tree cadaver.

18 December 6.4.14

- The meta text for attaching albatross wings to a skeleton now reflects that it’s harder to do so convincingly if it already has tentacles.
- Meta text for attaching a Holy Relic of St Fiacre is more precise.
- The Licence to Amend Your Face is usable again (and changing your cameo multiple times no longer requires refreshing the page).
- Changing your name now updates your name and Fate totals correctly.
- Social act quality requirements are now listed more clearly.
- The value of some options on the cards ‘Intervene in an Attack’ and Engage in some Minor Smuggling’ has been adjusted upwards.
- Resolved a missing cost of Cryptic Clues on the failure result for Pursuing a Case of Books in the Bazaar Side-streets

8 January

- Options for Identified With a School: The Terpsichoreans have been added to the Bohemian connected card and to the Empress’ court.
- The success result on the ‘Unlabelled Box’ branch of the card ‘Mr Wines is Holding a Sale!’ now gives only one Greyfields 1868 First Sporing alongside a few extra wine items.

15 January

- Completing a heist on the Circumspect Envoy’s townhouse now grants some Shadowy change points.
- Doubt Street changes:
-The various Doubt Street opportunity cards have been retired.
- Players with certain endgame traits will now find new branches in various Doubt Street storylets which allow them to gain more of a specific type of copy.
- Rewards for the standard newspaper editions (and the Seditious Edition) have been drastically reduced but now scale with the amount of copy you have accumulated.
- Rewards for the ‘masterwork’ newspaper editions have been slightly reduced.
- A new type of edition is available, which requires investigating rumours about the Bone Market; this can be done in Veilgarden or through the opportunity card ‘A Public Lecture’.
- Whirring Contraptions at the Bazaar Side-Streets now cost 120 Phosphorecent Scarabs, 24 Memories of Light. (Was 300 and 60)
- Cover Identity: Ties is now a Circumstance.
- A new proposal before the board is available if Sinning Jenny is part of the GHR board.
- The Cabinet Noir options to build Backstory have been slightly buffed in order to better reflect the action costs involved, and an extra branch has been added to cash in an especially large number of Pawns at once.
Casing in Parabola has been adjusted; now gives 28 change points (was 50).
- The Clay Highwayman’s story can now make an appearance in the Hinterlands.
- Post-release adjustments to the Clay Highwayman:
- Larceny cards had their value adjusted

- Added a card that triggers on Banditry 8 in the Upper River, for players who cannot get captured by the Clay Highwayman
- Added a post-story version of the Clay Highwayman’s opportunity card
- New options have been added to the cards ‘Respectable Passengers’ and ‘A Disillusioned Fungiculturalist.’
- A new proposal before the board is available if the Widow is part of the GHR board.
- The Pink-Painted Cat has been given a Dangerous stat, to reflect the fact that it is probably somewhat peeved about its ongoing state.

22 January 6.4.18

- Oneironaut, Unbishop, and other “Tier 4” professions are no longer listed as possible values in the Professions quality information text, as these are not possible to achieve and are not scheduled for future implementation.
- Bone Market buyer cards no longer list a card frequency; that they did so was a holdover from a time when they were opportunity cards.
- In some circumstances, a player could have appointed a lackey of Mr Fires to head the Tracklayers’ Union, but not to be able to use his services at a later occasion when it should have been possible. This bug has been fixed.
- The Cabinet Noir now accepts Moves in the Great Game as a way to build backstory.
- A new branch has been added to the Museum of Souls allowing players to trade for a certain rare item.
- More detailed hints are now provided for players who are stuck on searching for Furnace at Station VIII.
- Sinning Jenny and the Bishop of Southwark received additional comments to make about different station plan votes.
- Light and darkness cards at Moulin, Burrow-infra-Mump and Balmoral are now discardable.
- The opportunity to accept a board proposal at Moulin from the Wandering Gondolier is now not only locked but invisible for players who do not possess the Wandering Gondolier; this is to prevent confusion for players who instead have the Hell-Scarred Gondolier.
- Fixed a missing luck roll at the Museum of Souls.
- Changed the icon on Palimpsest Scraps.
- Clay Highwayman Larcenies:
- Stealing tier 7 items now requires Darkness on each respective card’s station.
- Stealing other items no longer requires Darkness.
- Trading Collated Research for Time Remaining in the Woods in Balmoral now gives 5 time remaining for 4 research (was 4 and 3).
- This change is specifically aimed at making the option to generate On the Scent by spending Thirsty Bombazine a little less efficient and generally keeping mammoth ribcage generation in Balmoral within band.
- Strong-Backed Labour is now much cheaper in the Clay Quarters and Bazaar Side-Streets.
- Emancipating Strong-Backed Labour gives similarly lowered rewards.
- Buying Crates of Expedition Supplies with Strong-Backed Labour now yields 3 crates (was 5).
- The valuation of strong-backed labour between London and the Hinterlands was very inconsistent, creating a big gradient that made the effective value of Church favours too high. This change is aimed at realigning them. It’s still dramatically more efficient to get SBL from the statue, but they are no longer exchangeable for Expedition Supplies at a rate that’s detached from their planned underlying value.
- Parties are now infinite draw with hand size = 3. Cards in parties are now sticky.
- The Nadir is now infinite draw with hand size equal to lodgings size.
- Two new cards allow for manipulating darkness in Burrow-infra-Mump and Balmoral.
- Once you have joined the Clay Highwayman’s gang, the option to join them to steal steel in London is now different (and marginally more efficient).
- Some variant text now appears when deciphering different documents in the Cabinet Noir; in addition, it is no longer implied that every dog in London is called Sugarplum.
- The Efficient Commissioner, in nightmares, now has a little extra optional dialogue about a recent item. (This is not required to unlock anything new.)
- Players with Red Colour at the Chessboard now have more options to change light and darkness in the upper river in either direction.
- Fate purchase payment now handles currency selection correctly.

R.I.P. Unbishop :(

The Diabolical Propagandist no longer pays out souls. :(

Will the success outcome for &quotSponsor a trading voyage to the farthest reaches of the zee&quot (from the storylet ‘Aspiring Zee-Captains’ in The Blind Helmsman) be adjusted to give two Whirring Contraptions instead of one? Since Contraptions were patched to be cheaper to buy in the Bazaar Sidestreets (and since Wilmot’s End now gives two per carousel instead of one), a change to this outcome reward would make sense.

I sometimes invest my excess Prisoner’s Honey with this storylet, but if it’s going to still give just one Contraption, it’s no longer cost-effective compared to Wilmot’s End or the Sidestreets.
- Parties are now infinite draw with hand size = 3. Cards in parties are now sticky.
- The Nadir is now infinite draw with hand size equal to lodgings size.
I just wanted to say that I really like the new infinite draw decks for parties and the Nadir. I think it really makes sense that they don’t interfere with the main opportunity deck, and I even like the fixed hand size of the party deck. I mean, why should a character with a spacious lodgings have more chances to meet a certain someone than a character with small lodgings? Expeditions in the Nadir, on the other hand, might profit from better preparations in a bigger house, so this makes sense, as well.

And also besides it making sense logically to me, I like how much quicker and more spontaneous both actions can be played now, without having to wait until one’s deck has enough cards to enter, or to get more cards when inside the action (while one cannot be reached for social actions). I even like that parties have become more unpredictable and exciting due to the hand restriction of three. I mean, before, especially when having a five-cards-lodging, one could meet every individual one wants/needs during a party with just sufficient waiting time - which is absolutely not how parties work in real life. :D

TL;DR: Thank you so much for tweaking parties and Nadir expeditions so nicely, dear people of Failbetter!

The cost of Parades at Jericho Locks appears to have been rebalanced. Sad.

29 January

- Your Cabinet Noir now has improved explanatory text to clarify whether you are about to start an identity without any Ties, or about to start one with specific ties established.

- Mementos of Silence and Mementos of Violence can now be earned at the Chessboard and in Parabolan hunts, in addition to other sources through social actions.

- Renamed the old ‘Write Letters’ storylet in Your Social Engagements to ‘Send a Message to a Contact’

- Merely adding someone as an acquaintance no longer grants Making Waves.

- Snubbing an acquaintance no longer affects Making Waves or Confident Smiles for either player.

- Reduced the Court of the Wakeful Eye tribute value for Strong-Backed Labour from 5 to 2.

- Installing Cornelius in place of Mr Fires’ Lackey was not an available option in all the circumstances when it should have been available. This has now been adjusted.

- Parties:
- Tentacled Entrepreneur now grants 1-2 Rubbery Men favours (was 0-1)
- A branch on the Whiskered Admiral card now grants 1 Society favour
- These changes should make it much more consistent getting 1-2+ favours from the activity.

- Jericho:
- Adjusted the value of some Tributaries of Hell to make EV consistent across all of them; EV has been lowered across the board.
- Buying Esteem of the Guild with Unprovenanced Artefacts is now less efficient.
- Buying Esteem of the Guild with favours is now less efficient.
- The overall gain from spending Docks favours in Jericho should now be slightly worse than spending favours at a statue, though of course Jericho requires drawing fewer cards.
- Buying Esteem of the Guild with Incendiary Gossip or Collated Research is now more efficient, and doesn’t lose resources upon failing a check.

 • The Pair of Balmoral Boots are now priced at 250 Hinterland Scrip to buy in the Upper River, and 125 to sell. This makes their value as a reward more in line with the value of other rewards given by Castellans at Balmoral.

- Historical items (Silvered Cat’s Claw, Rusted Stirrup, Trace of Viric, Unlawful Device, and Chimerical Archive) are now also their own category, Historical.

- Counter-Church items (Palimpsest Scrap, Apostate’s Psalm, Verse of Counter-Creed, False Hagiotoponym, and Legenda Cosmogone) have been placed in their own category, Theological.

- Adjusted the functionality and payouts of the Moulin Archaeological Institute:
- Buyers no longer pay out tier 1 items.
- Instead, they now pay out the full value of a monograph, split between different reward items according to the ratio between their ironic/cautionary/tragic values.
- All items now increase monograph value more.
- Monographs now have a greater starting value.
- Monographs that cost resources to start now have a starting value that reflects that cost.
- The ‘Expulsion of Roses’ monograph subject no longer requires ‘Closest to: Hell’
- Exceptional Monographs are now harder to achieve, requiring 7 Depth of Historical Study, no Incoherence, and some amount of all three tonal qualities (ironic, cautionary, tragic).
- The value for extra Exceptional Monograph rewards is no longer deducted from overall monograph value by buyers.
- Some buyers had their payouts changed, usually to give out more new-economy or upper river items.
- These changes are aimed at three things:
- Increasing the payout for the action cost of building a monograph to track the overall action EV of upper river activities.
- Increasing overall control over monograph payouts and the relevance of the reward mix to endgame players.
- Making it so exceptional monographs now require a mix of different inputs to generate.
- Making non-exceptional long monographs a reasonable way to convert large amounts of resources into other resources.

- Moulin Expeditions:
- Dying in the Moulin Waste no longer incorrectly zeroes the ‘A Route through the Moulin Waste’ quality.
- The storylet ‘Sort through the Loot’ now allows progress even with route = 0, so players who were affected by this can cash out Wages of a Dig and enter a new expedition.
- The Silk-Clad Expert’s card no longer incorrectly discards the player’s hand.
- Historical items rewarded by expeditions can now be sold for Echoes at the Bazaar; Nicatorean Relics, Traces of Viric, and Unlawful Devices can now be sold for scrip in the Hinterlands.
- Fixed the Proscribed Material reward from ‘Upper Layer’ expeditions being incorrectly calculated.
- Slightly tweaked the Nicatorean Relic payout from the ‘Across the Zee’ expedition; now gives a minimum of one relic instead of giving an extra one on top of the calculated value.

- It is now possible to appoint the Drummer to the Board without dedicating the Burrow Church to him in exchange for a False Hagiotoponym. (The price of appointing him if you have dedicated the Church to him remains the same.)

- The drink coffee card has been removed from the lab, since the 0 action entry and exit means it is no longer needed.

- For the same reason, the Plan Equipment Improvements for your Laboratory has been closed - since you can just dip into your lab to check, now.

- If you let your Irrigo get so high that you’re kicked out of the Nadir, you’ll no longer be able to Perhaps Not out of the exit card, so you should no longer be at risk of getting your stats drained twice.

edited by SaraFBG on 1/29/2021
I can’t say I’m a fan of this! :D

Adding the widow back to my board after accumulating some corporate debt had no associated reduction. Update: Oops, my bad, it looks like I accidentally added Virginia and not the Widow. Crafty, that Virginia!

5th February

- Darkness:
- Burrow and Balmoral darkness are now pyramid qualities. Adjusted the rate of change of both.
- Slightly increased the rate of change of Moulin darkness to match.
- Flit heists:
- A new heist is now available, intended to help players increase their Shadowy from 120-ish to 200.
- Target Security now has four possible levels. New cards were added to Flit heists to support this.
- The card ‘A Crack of Gunfire’ no longer requires Route: The Flit for its main branch.
- This is to prevent players from being able to draw this card without options, but getting into this state is very unusual.
- Epistolary:
- Reading Flameproof Missives now requires at least one rank of A Scholar of the Correspondence.
- The meta text for Names Written in Gant now reflects their actual effect.
- The Obdurate Stallion may now be loaned out, like other transports
- Cover Stories and the Cabinet Noir
- Payout of Unusual Love Stories at the Station VIII statue is slightly increased, and the Unusual Love Stories can be used to create Backstories in the Cabinet Noir
- Clearer meta-text explains the payouts of all backstory branches in the Cabinet Noir
- Cabinet Noir Surface-tied cover identities have an additional turn-in option in the upper river deck

- Chessboard
- Better guidance text was provided on some Chessboard branches
- Failure to secure either the Epaulette or the Queen Mate now gives a sizable quantity of Well-Placed Pawns
- Winning at either the Epaulette or Queen Mate now grants additional Well-Placed Pawns depending on the size of your lead
- A “Painter of Fine Art” quality tracks how many paintings you have completed at Balmoral, and uses this information to vary the description of sketching statues in the Upper River as well
- Additional quality level texts are now applied to following qualities:
- Meals Served at Station VIII
- Connected: Fingerkings
- Small feedback responses focused on the Bone Market:
- Failing to sell to a particular buyer now links back to the same storylet to try again
- Trying and failing to duplicate the Vake’s head now produces a spare Vake-tooth
- The Femur of a Surface Deer can be sold to the Bazaar

Is there any way that our maximum number of contacts can be increased in the next patch? With all of these gift exchanges, I’m frequently hitting the 200-contact limit, and it’s tedious to repeatedly prune my contact list.

This is especially problematic when someone adds you as a contact, which automatically adds them to your contact list as well, taking up space there.
