Notability and making waves has me worrying

Well, I just learned something that makes it slightly easier on me to get my notability up (I didn’t realize that BDR lowered the amount of making waves needed), but it doesn’t detract from what made me anxious in the first place: getting higher notability requires actually insane amounts of making waves!

Ironically, mid typing of this, I decided to check how many slots I had open for BDR items, and I didn’t realize that my association with god’s editors gave me 4 respectable! That’s a lot. Maximizing my current items for BDR took the making waves I needed from an insane 30 MW (465 change points), to a much more doable 23 MW (276 cp).

But I’m still worried about 5+ notability. No matter how you cut it, that’s getting to be a lot of making waves…more than I think I can even produce in a dedicated week.

I tend to build MW over more than one week – use the actions not needed for other plans. I also sometimes invest favours or other goods to boost them on lodging cards. The orphanage or salon are also good for building up potential MW over longer periods.

30 MW is quite doable in a week, if you put actions toward MW - like upconverting tales of terror to uncanny incunabula, going out for coffee with other players, the palace storylet &quotlife of the mind&quot et cetera.

That being said, it is not going to stop at MW 30, and for the upper tiers, you probably want a salon or orphanage - you can invest into scheming over time, and then cash in at an opportune moment for a very big boost of MW.

Also, I’d recommend looking through this guide, it was very helpful for me when I became a POSI: The ultimate guide to notability

Having all the best BDR items you can possibly get really, really helps. Something possessed me to try for Paramount Presence, not sure what, because I’m not usually interested in the more grindy aspects of the game. But I’m doing it casually, as a side-activity rather than making it the be-all and end-all, for one thing I don’t qualify for two of the London’s… (Known to all) qualities yet, so there’s no point in rushing. It hasn’t really felt all that painful so far.

It’s been a week since I got to 15 Notability and cashed that in, and I’ve made it back to 9 in that time. I’m not sure I’d be able to get to maximum Notability without my salon but I haven’t used it so far this week, I’ve been building up Scheme instead. I simply do all the options on cards that give Making Waves. I have a friend who is also doing this, and I regularly speak at her salon as a Crooked Cross, often several times a day. That helps her a lot and me a bit. If I’m getting near to TTH and have spare Making Waves that I don’t want to be wasted, but not enough to summon the Amanuensis then I do the inventory item conversions merry-go-round to get me enough MW for the next Notability point.

In conclusion my advice would be: Get a Salon or Orphanage, and grab every last little bit of BDR you can wring out.

30MW isn’t insane, even at end-game BDR maxing out notability requires something around 40-50MW. It does take some dedicated grinding to get there. However, it’s by no means unachievable - last time I was grinding it, I went from 13 to 15 in one week, using only side-conversions and I think about three crooked-cross speeches at my salon.
BDR helps immensely - every 4 BDR is equivalent to reducing the notability goal by 1 (since MW increases by 4 for each successive notability, but every point of BDR decreases it by 1). So with end-game BDR around 28+, N15 is equivalent to grinding up to N8 with 0 BDR. It does call for some bursts of doing nothing but increasing MW, but it’s not a world-ending grind.

Notability isn’t all that important anyway. There are a few specific things you want notability for (usually holiday events) and you can get it up for them in advance, ignoring it entirely the rest of the year.

I keep mine at 9 for the Unsigned Message boxes. It takes 0 effort to maintain since I get my MW to ~15 every week naturally from polite invitation parties.

Well, getting to at least 5 for now in order to become a correspondent, and apparently for some holiday events now too!

But fair enough. I should set up an orphanage or salon (once I actually get that lodging). On that note, is one better than the other, or do they have the same effect, in the end?

One of 'em, definitely. And unless you hate having money, or have nothing else left to purchase, go for the salon, it’s way easier.

And as someone who pretty much qualifies for nothing left to purchase, and after switching to orphanage to get laconic prodigy, I still went back to salon for paramount presence notability grind, it’s much easier.

Originally, it was easier to get the orphanage because all you needed was cash. The salon took connections, which makes sense, I suppose. I found it way harder at the time.

I like to do an on/off cycle for grinding MW. On the off weeks I just casually use opportunity cards to get myself to a decent spot for next week, and prep stuff like dinners/poet laurate/ etc. Those last few points of MW are also super helpful.
