Noob questions

Greethings!

I’m a FallenLondon noob, and have reached a point of confusion.
(I didn’t find a new players area, so if this is posted in the wrong place, please forgive and move.)

I’m Watchful 47+8, Shadowy 34+2, Dangerous 45+9, Persuasive 41+3
I have 4 lodgings, a Blemmingan Tourist, and my Aunt with me.

 1. I seem to be stuck in the middle of like 33 different stories - for most of them, I don’t know how to find/continue/conclude them.
 2. I have all these characteristics and don’t know how to build them up, other than incidental accidental results.
 3. I’ve been traveling a lot and changing residences, was that wrong?
 4. What’s the deal with all the lodging activities asking me to send emails to random other players - how does that work community-wise, and are these suggested players random? I don’t have any friends playing the game - are there player groups (dare I say guilds)?

I am really feeling directionless. Sadly I don’t really even know which questions to ask. Still exploring the forum and wikis, but I guess I’m just looking for general (or specific) advice from the more experienced players. Or links to good guides?

Thanks in advance! :)

Ah, a Surfacer! Welcome to London.

 1. The general answer is that you’ll probably find what you’re looking for. For specific answers, tell us what you’ve done so far (if you’ve got anything particular in mind).

 2. There are lots of different types of qualities. Some are basically plot trackers and will only be built up by particular stories.

 3. No. Explore everything you’ve any interest in. For residences, it’s usually best to pick one and stay in it unless you’ve got a reason to move; otherwise, you’re using up a lot of actions. Mechanically, those which give you the most cards in hand are generally best. However, you can always just stay in whatever place best fits your character.

 4. Inviting people to dinner and such will be useful later on, but if you’re just starting out it’s mostly for fun. The storylets related to your attributes give you options for building those attributes (Play chess for Watchful, suspicious loitering for Shadowy, etc.). Most people will accept these. You can also request help for certain types of Menaces in these same storylets. Again, most people are happy to help you out in a pinch.

Oh, and you now have one friend! Expect a message from Prof. Kan.

There aren’t groups or guilds or such around here, but you’ll find the community as a whole is very helpful and friendly. (I’ve only met one or two of the unpleasant sort in two or three years, and all have magically evaporated in short order.) By all means, ask questions, or ask for help, or just say hello.

For general advice: Do what seems fun! There aren’t many ways to go disastrously wrong here, and you can recover from just about anything if you do make a mistake. The only warning is not to start Seeking Mr. Eaten’s Name unless you know what you’re getting into. (This is usually signposted with loud warnings that this is a Bad Idea. Just make sure you know they’re not joking.)

The Making Your Name stories are good ones to pursue, and the longest series of stories unless you begin an Ambition or begin Seeking (but see above). These will also help you advance more quickly in your abilities.

One thing: Can you put a link to your character profile in your signature? It will help us find you.

Thanks Prof. Kan, I look forward to having someone to write!

(maybe you could help me with the code for the HTML link - I cycled through a few combos but couldn’t hide the Ref like you do in your signature.)

Check your inbox in a few minutes.

Dear Prof. Kan,
I have the same question. How does one post a link to one’s character profile? I have not been able to figure this out.
Thank you in advance!
Cheers, Benedicta

In case anyone else has the same question, I’ll post the answer here. To incorporate a hyperlink in the text of your signature, do like so:

[ url=Fallen London ]Prof. Sian Kan[ /url ], at your service.

Naturally, leave out the spaces in the brackets; those are just there so the coding is visible in the post.

Thank you so much Prof. Kan! As it happens, I figured it out just as you were replying. No wonder I’m considered sagacious! ;-)

We mean it about the Seeking thing. I’m Seeking and (spoiler)

I’ve spent the last week or so IRL circling a well. A well you can only get to if you have no wounds, no nightmares, 200 watchful and none of almost every item in the game. Also getting there gives you a wound point, so you can’t leave and come back easily. I’m still only halfway through my time circling the bl—y well. Seeking is a terrible, terrible idea.

It really is a very lovely game. If looking for role-playing and your character likes bohemian types feel free to message Caroline, woman of many secrets.
