Unless it’s changed since I ran through it, your progress in the Spires is saved - you should be able to get back to where you were with no more expendiature than a few actions. That said… I don’t remember all the requirements, I’m afraid, except for a pair of Bejewelled Lenses.
Yeah, you don’t need to pay twice, but you do need to invest the actions each time to get to the same place.
