I’ve been trying to figure out whether it’s possible to assemble an outfit featuring at least one item of each Neathy color. Bonus points if it’s an outfit that any character could theoretically assemble, so not reliant on items restricted to any one Profession or Ambition; extra super bonus points if no Fate is required. And no, the Neathoscope doesn’t count, although obviously it should ideally be included in the outfit anyway.
Here’s what I’ve found so far, including items that mention a Neathy color in their name, their description, or even are indirectly indicated as such (e.g. the Whaletallow Taper, which “burns with a flame born of the deepest zee” and is confirmed elsewhere to burn peligin). From what I can tell, it can be done but only by resorting to the multicolored Mesmeric Parasol. Let me know if I’ve missed anything!
Hat: The Cosmogone Crown, F.F. Gebrandt’s Patent Illuminating Cap (peligin), Gant Bowler of Fiduciary Responsibility, The Gant Moth, The Violant Demon [The Ephebe, Manifold is not described as any Neathy color, but given that the permanent versions of all the other Hallowmas masks are, and given that its icon is green, it could be assumed to be viric, or perhaps apocyan?]
Clothing: Glimsatin Gown (apocyan), Strange-Shore Parabola Frock/Suit (irrigo), Viric Frock/Suit [Are Parabola-linen garments implied to be cosmogone, would you say, or just amber?]
Adornment: Pair of Irrigo Goggles, Whaletallow Taper (peligin)
Gloves: ??? [Keelgraspers mention peligin, but just that they’ve been to the depths, not that they are peligin.]; ETA: Stainless Gloves (faintly irrigo), possibly Sun-Seared Silken Gloves (described as white, but imply a tint of cosmogone)
Weapon: Book of Red Murder (restricted to Nemesis; irrigo and violant), Mesmeric Parasol (irrigo, violant, and gant, which might be cheating) [The Seal of St Joshua is debatable: “Seal your prayers with wax. By evening, you will receive an irrigo-illuminated verse. By morning, you will have forgotten it.”]
Boots: Pair of Forgotten Spidersilk Slippers (irrigo)
Luggage: ???
Companion: Violant Moon-Miser (both it and the Alchemical Moon-Miser might be apocyan as well), Violant-Winged Bat (restricted to Nemesis), Violantly Mercantile Cuttlefish (violant and irrigo), Viric Lizard [Arguably, The Chromatographic Kinetoculus could represent cosmogone, violant, or peligin, depending what emulsion you favor.]; ETA: Inquisitive Lamp-Cat/Feline Pariah (peligin), Somnolent Hyaena (has viric eyes)
Tools of the Trade (by definition restricted to one Profession): A List of Aliases, Writ in Gant; A Pot of Violant Ink; Set of Cosmogone Spectacles; ETA: A Crooked Cross (apocyan), A Notched Bone Harpoon (peligin, or at least turns your eyes peligin), Shrine to Saint Joshua (irrigo)
Affiliation: ???; ETA: possibly An Absence (irrigo)
Transport: ???; ETA: As psgarak noted, the Coruscating Miser-Mount could be violant depending on whether your Zenith decisions gave you the Violant or Alchemical Miser-Mount. Malfinia points out that both Miser-Mounts glow apocyan as well. Plus the coruscation will add to your resplendence in any case.
I believe all the Tools of the Trade are tied to a Neathy colour - the Crooked Cross is lacquered in apocyan; the Shrine to St Joshua is clothed in irrigo; the Notched Bone Harpoon turns your eyes peligin.
Indeed, indeed, I just looked at the descriptions and you’re certainly right about the Crooked Cross and the Shrine! The Harpoon doesn’t mention peligin there, but it’s kinda gotta be associated with it, huh? Which leaves viric as the odd one out… interesting.
Yeah - there’s a viric-coloured, Shapeling Arts-granting Tool of the Trade-shaped hole in the game! They say the key to a great piece of art is including an imperfection that grabs people’s attention…
Honestly surprised there’s no gloves. There’s quite a few with ties to Parabola that might be Cosmogene but none that deal with it explicitly. Closest I could find is the Surgically Extracted Heart gloves, which consume a Viric mirrorcatch box on acquisition but that’s probably more related to the surgery.
Affiliation I’m less surprised since most of those aren’t physical, but there might be some possibilities. Self-moth requires Irrigo in the creation process, so that definitely counts, and I bet if you take a closer look at some of the other steps you might find more colors. I’ll check my journal for the full text of Patron of the Pliable Arts, but I bet there’s some neathbow colors in those sculptures.
Transport: The Coruscating Miser-Mount from Hallowmas could be Violant, depending on what decision you made in Zenith.
The Inquisitive Lamp-Cat has a peligin lure per the text when you introduce it to the Cub in the Dome of Scales. The bone harpoon doesn’t have a specific color in the game text AFAIK, but getting it (and consuming flesh of the beast you got it from) stains your eyes peligin.
Until they introduce some more cosmogone items, I may have to settle for the Sun-Seared Silken Gloves to complete my ensemble, because while they’re explicitly described as white, it also says they “remember the warmth of the sun,” so they’ve certainly got cosmogone vibes.
Makes sense! Sounds like the Stainless Gloves are irrigo-ish white and the Sun-Seared Silken Gloves are cosmogone-ish white. Lordy, imagine the people who name paint colors getting their hands on this…
I figured the Sun-Seared Silken Gloves are the white of the real sun, not the Cosmogone of the Parabolan sun. Which, unfortunately, does leave us with a bit of a bottleneck if we want to complete a full Neathbow outfit with only single-colour items. Even having a wild card in the form of the Tool of the Trade, it doesn’t seem possible to have Cosmogone, Violant, Apocyan, Viric and Gant at once.
Maybe An Absence, then? Obtaining it seems to be somewhat related to irrigo, as Midnighters get an extra passage, and the success text seems to imply getting exposed to irrigo. That’s a bit of a stretch, though.
I’d count A Book of Red Murder as an irrigo and violant weapon[1].
The Feline Pariah probably also has a peligan lure.
Arguably, the Alchemical Moon-Miser and the Violant Moon-Miser (and by logical extension, the Coruscating Miser-Mount) could count for apocyan. The misers are described as giving off apocyan light[2].
“Your story will be written in irrigo ink, produced on violant pages.”
Ooh, good additions. (Although it seems like the light from the moon-misers is already somewhat apocyan, I get the impression that the coruscation is [APOCYAN INTENSIFIES].)
It’s a bit cheesy, but if we count the Coruscating Miser-Mount made from an Alchemical Moon-Miser as single-color apocyan, it’s technically possible. You’d need to be a Nemesis (for the bat) Silverer or FATE-spending Nemesis Licentiate, so not achievable by most.
