Improving Stats - am I doing it wrong?

For context, my current stats:

[ul][li]Watchful = 67+19[/li][li]Dangerous = 47+14[/li][li]Persuasive = 44+15[/li][li]Shadowy = 42+12[/li][/ul]When I get to an action-decision page, I usually take the harder of the two actions (unless it’s a new bit I haven’t done yet), as it seems to grant more stat increase, but first I make sure my gear is set to maximize the stat related to the challenge.

I get the feeling, however, that I might be earning less stat progress by making them easier (closer to 100% success chance), because of all the warnings that I don’t learn as much from easier challenges. Also there’s that talking rat that reduces everything by 25. Am I retarding my progress by maximizing gear?

If anyone can explain how this works it would be grapely appreciated! :)

I believe the way it works is you get 1cp for the check if it’s 80% or better chance, 2cp if it’s less than 80%. The rat isn’t really used for that, it’s more for accessing or removing opportunity cards you don’t normally have the ability to control.

The amount of stat gain you get is definitely based on the actual success chance that you see, not your unmodified stats.

It’s up to you whether you want think occasionally failing the stat-check is worth the extra stat points. There are also other sources of stat boosts, most notably completing major chapters in the Making Your Name storylines, and turning in Favors on faction opportunity cards.

Don’t worry about maximizing your stats quickly. Just play the stories. They will fill up faster than you think, especially since you decided to become an Exceptional friend.

While you do get more CP for harder chances, you also get more CP if you succeed on the check than if you fail. In theory you do level slightly faster by making checks hard as possible, but you also gain more menaces and miss out on other rewards. The slower progress on stories makes you lose more time than you gain.

The ideal success rate percentage for raising stats is 90%. You get 2 cp on success and 1 on fail, meaning 1.9 on average. If you want to min/max your gear for stat gains, that’s what you should shoot for.

In the end game there are better ways to raise stats (typically by farming second chances), so yeah, might be best to just not worry about it.

Really, in Fallen London, it’s generally best to focus on story progression rather than stat progression. Jolanda has the right of it. The stats’ll get there, trust me, well before you run out of things involving stat checks.

Strictly speaking the ideal success rate for raising stats is 10%, as you get 6 CP on success and 4 on failure, for 4.2 on average. It’s just awful for getting anything else done, even without menaces.

If you really want to raise your stats quickly, social actions are quite effective. You can turn in the Second Chances you get at your Lodgings to raise the relevant stat. Also, you might consider finding a patron.

I list myself as wanting a Patron in the Singing Mandrake thread for that purpose. If you’re offering, send me a PM or IG Message and I’ll follow with a request. ;)

What are the benefits of having/being a patron or protege?

A patron can send a protégé a teaching social action. If the protégé accepts, she or he gains a stat boost while the patron gains Making Waves.

And being a Patron also allows a Paramount Presence to take you on MW generating carriage rides, without having to be a protegee of the Presence
