You could spend time collecting map scraps, zee stories, maniac’s prayers, and shrieks and then getting rid of the nightmares/wounds with fish. Or grab some hardback labor for expeditions.
I rather got the feeling that the Campaigner is doing what she always does. Doesn’t she spend every year campaigning?
In complete other news, has anyone else caught something that made them want to skip all the cash-in options and just get it mounted for the den? "Luxurious rainbow fins" seem wasted in the lump-pot.

my tinfoil theory is that feducci invented the paramour rumour himself so people don’t question him whenever he retires to his rooms at weird times of day because wink wonk someone is waiting there for him, but the only thing waiting for him is a pillow he cries into about bureaucrats being mean

I agree with gronostaj about the Paramour, but disagree about the pillow. Feducci would be likelier to swear privately than to sob privately, I think.
Perhaps he’ll show up unexpectedly within a few days. I can’t believe FBG has no surprises for the Festival this year.

I think he’s more likely to stab the pillow, to be honest. Blythenhale’s pillow replacement bills are going to be exorbitant.
why would he swear privately and not in public @failbetter ya cowards let feducci say [CENSORED]
But why would he? It’s not as if attending the Festival on Mutton Island is some kind of official Mayor duty.
We only expected to see him because we happened to meet Jenny there last year. But she was there for her own (non-festival-related) reasons.
If, for example, FBG are planning some romance (real of fictional) for Feducci, they might plan for him to make an appearance during the Feast of the Rose, for example. No need to confine them to have to write in the new Mayor in one specific holiday event.
The Festival of the Exceptional Rose is the very last festival before the next election. If you wanted to build up and stretch out the suspense over just what Feducci is up to for the longest possible time, then the Feast is the place for him to make his appearance.
So if there’s nothing new, do we have a compilation of Strange Catch values to what items they give?
EDIT: nvm! I checked Phryne’s guides and it’s all right there!

Assuming of course that he only makes one. It is possible (and I daresay many would say desirable) to see the mayor at multiple festivals.
We only really saw Jenny at one festival. She didn’t make anything but her usual appearances at the Feast of the Exceptional Rose, her Christmas interactions required fate, and she didn’t actually appear during Hallowmas - Sister Lydia did.
Oh, speaking of Sister Lydia - maybe Feducci’s new paramour is going to be his defacto assistant?

Certainly. However, she was the first mayor, and Failbetter has already shown they’re not bound by her precedent. No mayor here. Failed candidates here. I think we can expect that, whatever Feducci does, it will not be following in Jenny’s footsteps.
While we’re at it, can I please say a huge thank-you to the writers for including the Campaigner and Detective in post-election London? You remember I was hoping for it back after the election, and they’ve certainly delivered. I’m loving it - and I can’t wait to see how things develop over the next year. And did anyone else think the Detective’s comments here foreshadow the promised Dilmun storyline extension?

edit: does he even have an assistant? he probably wouldn’t keep lydia (unless he forgot about firing her and hiring a new assistant, which would be hilarious) and seems to have let his manager devil go.
speaking of jenny, she might very well be the paramour she and feducci lived together for a week. maybe what we thought were rivalry quarrels was actually ambient sexual tension all along (i’m kidding. would still read that fanfiction though)

Jenny didn’t have an assistant until…the Fruits of the Zee festival, when Sister Lydia made her grumpy debut. Sister Lydia then had further appearances during Hallowmas and the Feast of the Exceptional Rose. Having an assistant lets the mayor be discretely involved in things from afar, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Feducci has some sort of assistant at some point.

Feducci can recover from being reduced to chunky salsa by a player character. If Feducci were to drown, though, would he forever remain a Drownie? He’s certainly got a lot to lose if that were the case, so it’d be understandable for him to avoid festivals where Drownies come up on shore to sing and dance and entice tourists to join them under the waves.
Drownies don’t necessarily drown, they just have to eat the flesh of the Lorn-Flukes at a Drowning-Feast. As I understand it at least.

You just wait: at the conclusion of the Feast of the Exceptional Rose 1896, Feducci’s paramour will be revealed to be none other than…
…
…
…
The Dauntless Temperance Campaigner
Remember, friends: you read it here first.

Yeah, no.
The Drownies might have a grudge against Feducci for refusing to let one of their number leave the Black Ribbon. More likely though he would have wanted to avoid the Dauntless Temperance Campaigner, who would have protested him, as she does.

"We’re here to establish some guiding principles for the rest of the year’s campaigning…"
This is a bit different from her usual activities, wherein she supports a grab bag of good causes. Here she’s talking about a single, organized, year long effort - i.e., combating the mayor.

Never having had any insight into her plans before this year, I do not know that we have grounds for comparison. Do we have any evidence that she has not had long-range plans in years past? I do not know of any, and one cannot argue from a vacuum.
(In fact, now I reread it, "some guiding principles for the rest of the year’s campaigning" sounds not like a new offensive against Bythenhale but a continuation of her work from the first half of the year.)
Also, we do not know precisely what she intends to do over the next year. Her speech is interrupted by people complaining about Feducci, which mostly annoys her. While further action against Feducci is highly probable (given that she’s protesting him already), we cannot say with any certainty how much the mayor is affecting her long-term plans.
