Fallen London Patch Notes

There is now a central place for Fallen London patch notes, in a dedicated channel on the new Official Discord.

Does this make the forum the official Red-Headed Step-Child, then?

Well, that’s certainly not what I expected when I clicked on the thread title.

Is it really too much to ask that the notes be put here, too, where they are more accessible and don’t require another app?

I set up an account on the Discord when it first appeared, but the format is frankly awful. Chaotic and without any through line. But maybe I can mention that there are goodies to be had? Coffee and other stuff…

How in the Neath would one find them in all that mess?

How in the Neath would one find them in all that mess?
The Darkdrop Coffee (x3) and future important information can be found in the #announcements channel. Patch notes can be found in the appropriately named #patch-notes channel. Most of the other channels are purely for discussion purposes.

Not posting the patch notes here makes sense as a marketing push, but in the interest of those who would prefer not to be on Discord:
- A new look landing page in honour of Fallen London’s upcoming 10th birthday on 11th January 2020. This is just the beginning of the celebrations!

 • Removal of SuperRewards as a payment option. SuperRewards is mostly used by players who need to pay in less common currencies. (97% of you use our other payment system, Braintree, which will be unaffected, and this won’t affect subscriptions at all.) We’re sorry we couldn’t provide more notice: we were only informed a few days ago. Given the short notice, we can’t say yet when and if we’ll add support for another payment provider or other payment methods: we expect to investigate in the next few weeks. If there were any payment methods that were particularly useful to you, though, please let us know in #fallen-london so we have a clearer sense of which ones it would be most helpful for us to support.

 • An updated Help page, including links to this very Discord. Please watch out for lost new players, and give them any advice you can in #beginner-advice. We were all fresh from New Newgate once!

 • A fix for a rare Bazaar interface bug.

 • Also, we’d like to confirm that the card frequency bug which bothered your decks has been fixed.

I guess I’ll continue to stay away from Discord out of sheer obstinacy now, if nothing else. ;)

And after all, I don’t need to know everything beforehand. The new landing page yesterday was a pleasant surprise and I’m looking forward to many more surprises coming my way over the next months!

I mean, I am one of those persons! :D
And these small changes are damn nice. Small because I was logged and only noticed the favicon of the site; I only saw the landing page after seeing the forums.

Seriously? Why not post them here, too?
The Discord format is beyond messy and having to follow it to get info on time, seems coercive. Especially after so many complaints.

I liked it when the forum was the main place to find out things about the game. The more you do this kind of thing, the less I feel connected to the game, and the less engaged with it I become (I couldn’t be bothered with the election this year, mostly because you couldn’t be bothered to tell us about the candidates here like you used to). Not interested in joining up to umpteen social media just because you guys have lost interest in the forum.

Disconnect is exactly what I felt. I loved the new ES, I loved the new Hallowmass to the point I spent Fate again on small things like the plant… and now this. Not being able to find the new codes in the mess that is Discord didn’t help either.

I noticed that the official Advent Calendar announcement pointed everyone to the FB Discord, and Discord only. It makes one wonder whether the forum is slated to go the way of StoryNexus (which, let us remember, they once said they would always maintain).

This has made me wonder, somewhat to my surprise, whether I would stay in the Neath at that point. I love the game and still have things to do, but let’s be honest: the Cider grind isn’t terribly exciting on its own. The forum, with all its roleplay and debate and general friendliness, has been a chief force in keeping me engaged and involved in the Neath. The discordance that is Discord… isn’t going to do it for me.

well my friend let me assure you whatever you chose that all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well but as a fairly new player just joined a year or two ago finding this has been a boon and I would suggest you rage rage rage against the dying of the light

That seems to be the theme of the entire topic.

Eh, to think it could have been avoided easily. At Hallowmass, everyone was delighted the thread was posted in the forum, clarifications were made about why the forum was left out for so long, and there was even a comment on a player’s artwork. I do not doubt that every little bit counts as work for FB, but the reactions make it clear that players feel the neglect of the forums accutely, no matter how popular Discord might become (and given the format, I doubt it can generate the same amount of devotion even if it gets busy.

Instead of further rage ('tis not the time of year for rage!) let me propose an - at least temporary - solution:

We open a thread here called &quotRecently Shared on Discord&quot or something like that where those fine gentlepersons among you who follow the full gamut of FL-related communication channels (Forum, Reddit, Discord, Twitter, maybe even IRC if that still exists) keep us updated on things we would otherwise miss.

What do you think?

Actually, from the few times I’ve been, it is undeniably busy. 600 or so members, of whom around a third were on line last time I visited. No way to know numbers here, of course.

I have to wonder how much of it is related to the age and relative unpolish of the forum software — although I heard a reputable rumor that FBG may revamp the forums next year ;)

I am sure it’s busy. I am not sure if it can generate the same long-term commitment, for a variety of reasons.

Phryne’s suggestion is great, of course, but one thing FL always had going, was that player feedback in the forums was always read and taken into consideration by the dev team. Getting the news is one thing; knowing your experience counts is another. Having to add another app/account for that… is a bit much, when there is a dedicated forum with active participants. Plus I doubt the organized, easily-available-for-years convos here can be replicated anywhere. I am using guides and playing old ES according to help given in the forums.

I am not sure why oficially posting info here, when it has been requested so many times, is frowned upon. To give an example, the elections, which for many of us just suddenly happened without the teasing and discussions and official candidate threads of previous years, suffered for it. Hence the disconnect which again, is a very fitting word.
