Well, I’m back after 5 years and not too sure what I’m doing and don’t much remember what I’ve done in the past. I have apparently angered the Widow (despite being Connected with her at 20), because this is asking me to provide a Comprehensive Bribe in order to move forward. I’m looking at methods of acquisition in the wiki but I don’t know enough to tell what a good move is. My Nostalgia items are a bit scant to use up for a 5% conversion success chance. My most plentiful inventory items are Wild Words and Mysteries. Never did much to earn Echoes-- whoops. I have a few routes opened up, but no Bone Market, Railway, etc. I never did participate in any Estivals-- my last event was the final Mayoral race.
I can of course provide any other necessary information.
It seems I could reset In Search of a Stiff Drink to push through it, but I’m not sure how much I’d lose doing that.
I am not a Person of Importance and do not have access to the Side Streets. My stats are as such:
- 113 Watchful
- 80 Shadowy
- 103 Dangerous
- 93 Persuasive
The game is subtly telling you that you should become PoSI before you can proceed further in your Ambition.
Comprehensive Bribes are a PoSi crafting resource, and the Bazaar Side-Streets are the only guaranteed source in the early-mid game.
There are a few pre-PoSi RNG-based sources of Comprehensive Bribes (most notably the story of the Fidgeting Writer), but you’ll need to become PoSI anyway soon afterwards to proceed further in your Ambition, so you might as well work on PoSI status now.
Well, you’re about ten percent of the way to completing Bag a Legend (40 out of 450 parts/levels/points), so really early on. It looks from the guide (Wiki) as if the widow chapter may be one that you can fail a few times. This was my ambition, as it happens, and I’m afraid I don’t remember that bit at all. The step before it assumes/requires Watchful 127.
Anyway – the idea of the ambitions is that you work on them as a kind of side project while you expand your activities in the Neath and build your stats. They’re a long term undertaking, and parts of them assume certain levels / abilities.
From the requirements for this step, I think you probably need Person of some Importance status – then the Comprehensive Bribe is trivially easy to put together in the Side Streets. (I looked at all the other options, and as you say, trying to get it from the Mercer is uncertain and liable to be expensive, knowing the RNG. And that seems to be the only one that isn’t locked behind POSI or the railway or Parabola, or confined to special events.)

Thanks for the advice. I believe I turned back to Bag a Legend because I hit a wall in my University POSI track. I’m meant to be investigating a murder, but all I have available at the moment is the Begin Your Investigation storylet. I am on Term Passing 11 and Featuring 5. I can’t seem to find anything to give me Investigating… The guide claims I can start at Passing 10, but I don’t even see the “Talk to the porters” storylet it’s talking about-- not sure where it’s located, even. Trying not to mess this up as I know I’ll lose access to the university at some point.
“Talk to the Porters” isn’t available to you yet, it will be unlocked later in the University storyline, at “Featuring in the Tales” 9.
You can keep going around the Term Passing carousel for the story and for profit as long as you like, but eventually you’ll need to progress the “Featuring in the Tales” storyline through the “Making your Name: A most notable academic” storylet.
I think the more general advice is “continue the storylines you have available, and don’t worry about rushing for things you can’t get to yet.”
You’re really early in the game. Many, many storylines you start right now will have things you can’t complete yet. So progress the things you can! You’re not going to “mess it up” by locking yourself out.
You’re in the midst of a University carousel. Play that through a few times, try all the different options including the different ending options, see if there’s anything that progresses the story. There probably is.
Or go to the othe Making Your Name stories (Dangerous, Persuasive, Shadowy) and see what the next steps there are. If you’re not sure where you are, play all the different options available to you and see what they do. You’ll need to complete all of them anyway.
Or go to all the different areas you have open, see if there’s any open stories you can continue.
You are far, far too early to worry about “completing your ambition”. Completing the ambition will take stats around ~200, post-POSI status, exploring the zee with your ship (which you can only get after POSI), access to Parabola, and probably a whole bunch of other stat gates or story gates that you can’t get to yet. If you advance the game in general, you’ll get there eventually.
