Commiseration: Our most painful failures

Judging from the frequency of their appearance on my alt, the City Vices cards for the Admirer of Beauty and Admirer of Art will render a four-card lodging useless if I were to leave the Penstock-housing. I can’t come up with any rationale for why I clicked that damn option in the Shuttered Palace on my main character’s account.

Please, delicious friends, is there some way to spurn them both? If I have a threesome with them, can I tell them they besmirch even a Traitor’s throne, and they should share the trophy for worst NPCs I have been forced to seduce?

Take the first step towards that, and she’ll be quarantined to the Bazaar Side Streets. Do the same with the Master Jewel Thief who also turns up. The artist card remains though, but surely it was only your curiosity that forced you to seduce him? (I consider him to be the ‘old lover’ who’s supplying me with Collections of Curiosities through The Treasures of War. Mostly because I actually would like to send assassins after him. Don’t want to lose access to Collections of Curiosities though!)

As for the 4-5 card lodgings, they are useful for keeping options open and when going into the Cave of Nadir. They’re also useful during pickpocket promenades and heists, but I guess those activities aren’t particularly useful in themselves, so perhaps no one cares about them. Menace areas and zee-faring perhaps? Just about any place with its own deck ought to benefit from having 4-5 cards instead of just 3.

As for painful failures, right before the feast I began to feel that this game was more of a chore than being fun. And isn’t that the worst failure one could experience? I seem to have bounced back for now, so good for me. I mean, I haven’t even hit the content barriers yet. I shouldn’t be bored yet.

Making Waves… argh :). At Notability 14 and MW25, needing to get to 45 for Notability 15. OK, no problem: I have built up 14 ‘Nights on the Town’ and have the card in hand - here I go. Except: that the RNG decides to mess with me and only give an average of maybe 30 MW per Night. So now I am sitting at 41 MW and Time is about to arrive… nooooo :-/

Fate is assuredly your friend this day, for the word has just come that Time, the Healer will be delayed this week as a side effect of the servers having moved house. I hope you manage to achieve your goal before it resumes!

I can imagine our friend sitting in the Honey Dens of Veilgarden with a carload of wine :)

Ha! Thus tangle our webs. I burned through a BUNCH of coffee to grind the wherewithal to reclaim some of those MW back into Nights, only to see this delay in Time :-). Hmm. Well, whatever happens it has most certainly been a fun and frantic scramble, and I now have 20 Nights to try once more should I be unable to outwit the delayed advance of Time…

Time came for me already, so it must be almost due for you

I’ve sided with the Revolutionaries at every opportunity, always, which included passing them location of the Nadir. I have, to my knowledge, the highest amount of Connected: Revolutionaries around - it’s sitting at 602 right now. And then Hallowmas showed us just what the Liberation of Night actually is.

Ahh, regrets.

I assume I have many more epic failures to come, as such is the way of life, but I was finally starting to find my feet when I decided to put on that ridiculous hat. It drained all my stats to almost nothing and then some urchin stole the d—ed hat.

I have purchased a new hat. I will not be bested by haberdashery.

Nothing too bad compared to some of the other things I’ve seen being posted here.[li]
However I have had the displeasure of having February catch up to me just as I was sitting at 59 Archaeologist’s Progress on the initial expedition to the Nadir.
Even fate couldn’t solve it, since I had 9 supplies and the fate option for more supplies required I have literally any other amount of supplies.

That was pretty disheartening.

Failing a 25% luck check 4 times to advance to Midnighter.

(I used favorable circumstances for the first 2 with a scrawled second chance, and drew the card afterwards.) [li]

I drew a card that let me become an Umpire of Knife and Candle, which I did. Some time later, I drew a card asking me to deal with a dispute as Umpire. I took the option of murdering those responsible. Within seconds of my success, I had my Umpire status revoked, menace increase, and I had lost ALL my hard won Connected: The Masters. In return, I gained Knife and Candle Rank 1, which I have now been told is redundant, and that the card is a relic! I need to learn to fail better.
Is the information I’ve been given correct? I really hope not.

I lost my Disgraced Rattus Faber Bandit-Chief yesterday, by accidentally klicking the wrong button. My roommate heard my cry of dismay to the other side of the apartment. I was rather fond of that rat and I’m still angry at myself for being so careless. None of my other losses, chance- or itemwise, have been so painful.

I hate sea journeys. So I blew some nex to try and get the blessed thing over with (cycling through a lot of cards). I arrive, finally, at my destination. And then click on the storylet that appeared, thinking that was the usual ‘welcome to wherever’ thingy. And find out that I’ve cast out back to sea.

Can I be bothered to do all that all over again? Right now? No, I cannot.

Just spent a few days grinding and novel at court to get into god’s editors, and had been holding the card for a week. Turns out that I chose to write the one option out of seven that results in failure.

Look on the bright side. You can use that in designing your zubmarine.[li]

For content, I can’t really think of anything too too horrible.
I’ve wasted some Dramatic Tension by going to zee halfway through a War of Assassins cycle, as well as Investigating and Fascinating, though on different zee trips.
I’ve wasted a whirring contraption by writing a newspaper edition when my Shadowy was too low to practically make the checks.
I’ve had a few cases of failing the check at the end of a carousel, like Coil 2 of the Labyrinth of Tigers, Scientific Expeditions, and the Velocipede Squad. I was so close to getting those incunabula to incubate my Pristine Raven Egg.
My most recent &quotThis is Baloney&quot moment was when I came back from the Tomb-Colonies without a lion, when I needed to breed an obdurate stallion.

ack. my alt grinds his neglected persuasive skills just get into the university through a more “direct”(money) route, and i get kicked out just for failing a low risk dangerous challenge!!!

how miserable. the very first action i took in the uni got me kicked out!.

I recently changed my profession from Journalist to Author, on my fourth try at doing so. After grinding up my Connected: Bohemian sufficiently (25, I believe), I set out to write the requisite Exceptional Short Story. The first time, I spent a great deal of actions, Romantic Notions, Blackmail Material, etc., and promptly forgot which specific category of short story I was supposed to write, churning out (IIRC) an Extraordinary Short Story. Definitely a category or two above what was required. When I figured out what I had done wrong, I set about rectifying my mistake. Twice in a row, I wrote another Short Story, getting my Potential high enough for (the first time) an 89% chance of an Exceptional story, and (the second time) a 92% chance or thereabouts. Both times I failed and only got a Compelling story. Finally on the fourth try I got lucky and managed to get an Exceptional Short Story. At least I got some Echoes out of it. Still, that screwup on the first one really annoys me.

So just for fun, I’ve been trying to see just how low I can get Troubled Waters at the end of a Zee voyage. I had my best ever run lined up using cards spaced out over time. I even drew the Fleet of Truth card four times, a dependable bump in Progress with no TW.

Except it wasn’t. I didn’t want to bother going through buffing Dangerous because I was already at 89% success, I might miss on one of them, but most I would succeed on. Nope. Four straight Fleet of Truth cards, four straight failures. For those keeping score at home, there’s just over a 1 in 10,000 chance of that happening.

Stupid RNG.

Well now I have content. I was doing a Polythremic Promenade, trying to get material for a travelogue, and was doing quite well actually. Had Fascinating… at 11 with 3 actions left to get it up to 13 for maximum reward, easy enough if my luck kept. And then I misclicked and all that time and effort was converted into Romantic Notions instead. :([li]
