CHRISTMAS IN THE NEATH: A GUIDE

Hard to say, since I’m currently dreaming about Paris, 1908. No matter what though I don’t think 2013 was last year :P

No its cool, I admit I make mistakes. I’ve been around a long time, my memory is bad, and I’ve seen so many different iterations of events that sometimes I get mixed up and my information is a little stale or off course. I’m no spacemarine9 that’s for sure, that dude is pretty much infallible when it comes to lore. It’s really helpful to have a community of smart inquisitive folks who know how to look into these matters on their own. It helps correct out any errors I make and I thank you for your aid.

I’m a good source of approximate knowledge of many things, but not much more than that.

You certainly know and have experienced a lot more than I have, or than most members of the community. Was there even anyone else who was ever sun-scorched? In any case, hats off to you for being so helpful and inquisitive! Even though this monocle isn’t really a hat.

There are at least two others who were sun-scorched, but I believe NiteBrite is the currently the only active one.

Oh, I did the math on the IRC and I should probably mention here. Anyone grinding Scholar of the Correspondence for insepcting pails of lacre should invest in exchanging Surprise Packages with someone.

As is, it takes 32 or something actions to gain 1cp Scholar of the Correspondence via the Court, doing this also gives you 30 echoes of Moon-Pearls, if you sold these to supply exchanging Surprise Packages, that 1cp goes up to 1.33CP over 41 actions (this is pure action-wise, not looking at the probablity of drawing the Give a Gift card).

On details, there’s a 11% chance to get ‘Something …perilous’ and a 1cp increase in SotC and 3 actions to equally send, accept, and open a package.

If you want to go into a Surprise Package exchange, here’s a thread for just that:
http://community.failbettergames.com/topic21057-surprise-package-delivery-service.aspx

Did some who took the action know in advance it wouldn’t have consequences? Or were there multiple people unusually self-destructive for even Seekers?

There were three of us and both of these things were true. Mac Trilby was the first scorched and is the one mentioned in old FBG interviews. I was working towards it already but it took long enough to get there that I already knew about Mac’s experience before I acted. Although he didn’t give the full story; I learned new things by experiencing it myself. I haven’t seen Mac around in ages.

The third was a knife and candle friend of mine by the name of Victor Gluenko who did it third without knowing about either of us. Victor also had plans to explore low stats content with me using bottled oblivion, but he dropped out of the game before getting around to it.

… Apparently I sacrificed to the Gods of Statistical Significance (as my computer-scientist/mathematician husband would say). Because I got one via the Rat last year. So it does happen. I’ve had a couple other unlikely outcomes too…the things you try because you don’t know how valuable - or unlikely - they are?

I prepared for Sackmas by creating 11 Night Whispers and 77 Storm Threnodies… will it mean I probably won’t need to spend Tears on sustaining a Noman to the Feast?

What’s the extra Tattoo option, anyway? Is it a tattoo of a Noman? Or access to special tattoos in general. One of my characters just got his first Ubergoat, so he’s probably going to want a tattoo of that. Does that mean he shouldn’t aim for keeping a Noman alive but rather just buy early and experience the story / Elemental Secret?

It’s my first proper Sackmas. Last year I just winged it but still ended up with a 6-card Lodging each and a Remote.

That’s probably still not enough to not need to use Tears. It’ll certainly help but who knows. Theoretically it’s even possible for a Noman to survive until the Feast without healing it at all but it’s incredibly unlikely. And yes, the extra tattoo option is a Noman tattoo that counts as your choice for the year.

You’d need about four times as much material to guarantee noman survival without tears. But if you are going for the ubergoat tattoo then you can’t also get the noman tattoo in the same year anyways.

It’s a tattoo of a noman in specific, and two sentences of special text. Any other tatoo can be aquired without a noman.

How’d you get the 6-card lodogings? i’m still stuck at 4-card, and most people at 5-card.

I don’t think 11 pails will be enough, feel free to try anyways. you’ll just prolly regret it.

Err, that was supposed to say 5-card Lodgings.

Thanks for input on Tears and Tattoos, folks.

Does snow accumulate? I.e. if I don’t clear snow for 3 weeks and then clear it will I be able to get 3 buckets or only 1?

Only one I am afraid. Snow does not accumulate, so be sure to clear it when you can.

Thank you. That does present some logistical difficulties with when to go to Apis Meet. I almost wondering whether I should postpone Flint II until January as it would save me from micromanaging when I am in London and give me more time to grind my Night Whispers and Storm Threnodies…

I don’t think there’s much risk of problems. I’ve been in the Continent for about a day and seem to be at least a third of the way through, from what I know. If you’re really concerned about it, you could wait until your Time the Healer brings snow, collect it, then head out. Apis Meet has quite a bit of extra content and can be accessed by ship or tramp steamer even after the story is finished, so if in a rush there’s no need to keep looping through days to get all the options.

It depends on how many weeks your Noman needs to survive. If it’s 3 weeks and you spend all the ToL from 11 Pails on helping Noman (need to draw his card 6 times) then you have 199 initial Noman’s Friend and 99.6% chance of survival! However, if it needs to survive 4 weeks, the chance is only 64.6%.

Thanks for the stats!
Two of us will aim for the long haul, whilst one only needs to enjoy the Noman’s story short-term.

I haven’t actually read the benefits of a Noman other than the tattoo if it survives. I think it’s one of only two ways to get an Elemental Secret? Hallowmas Edition being the other.

I will try to get all the Neathmas has to offer: three 5-card logings, a remote address, ES from Noman, long-box and Noman tattoo. According to my calculations, I can get all of this if I draw enough cards.
Btw, I have calculated some other probabilities: chance of survival vs. initial friends, chance to get a certain amount ToL vs. number of tears. I can post them here or you can PM me.
