I still had the one I inherited, and I completed the Irresponisble’s storyline to get another and give it to Fathie. I didn’t bother checking if I actually got a new one, but now that I’m checking my hold in London, I only have the one in my FORWARD slot, and I don’t remember selling it.
Could someone confirm this behaviour?
Okay, this is kinda funny: It turns out they were stacked on a single icon (like everything else is, really; why I didn’t think of that), but since the small number that appears on things’ icons if you have more than one doesn’t appear on what you have equipped, I didn’t immedieately notice I did indeed posess two Memento Mori.
Case closed. Stupid Fathie.

I had the same experience. I had 2 but never knew because quantities don’t display on the ship equipment screen.
Did you try selling one? I suppose this is somewhat “bugged” since it saves you a cargo slot when it shouldn’t.
Apart from quantities not being displayed on equipped stuff (which can be excused as you don’t have all of them active at once), the hypothetical bug you describe isn’t actually there - you only save one cargo slot per item equipped. So even if I didn’t have any Memento Mori icon in the Cargo Hold section, the unused one was still taking up one space. That is, unequipping the Memento Mori icon decreased my remaining space not by two (amount of MM that were added to the Cargo Hold section), but one, and with it equipped, the total sum of the quantities displayed in that section added up to one less than what was displayed as in use.
I realised this when (after making a copy of my save) I gave the MM to the admiralty, but was offered to do it once again afterwards. I reloaded, checked, and sure enough, donating a MM decreases your MM quantity by 1.
So everything’s fine, though if someone accidentally double-clicks when buying a weapon and equips it without first noticing the 2, it might take them some time to figure out why they have one cargo space less avaliable than they can count.
Fascinating - I suppose I should have noticed it was still using up a cargo space!
