Blurry text, assistance required

I have recently purchased «Zubmariner» and decided to give the game another go. Unfortunately, almost immediately I encountered a significant issue — the in-game text is noticeably blurry. My eyes are pretty bad, and I am definitely not willing to strain them any further.

I have contacted the developers, but so far no working solution has been offered, and it’s been six days since the last reply. Frankly, I am not hopeful.

So, is there any way to fix the problem? I would love to play «Sunless Sea» again but the blurry text is very exhausting for my eyes.

OC: Win 7
Native resolution: 1280x1024

Some of the options that I’ve tried already:

UI Scale: x1
Font Scale: x1
Resolution: 1280x1024

Is this problem only in Sunless Sea? If it appears anywhere else (browser, text documents etc.) fiddling a little with you display settings could help (maybe). Go to Control Panel, then Display, and something like… “adjust clarity of type text” (more or less. Different language setting, I’m impromptu translating into English.) The interface will walk you through sharpening the display to the maximum.

These actually look pretty normal to me. As in, I’m pretty sure my game looks about the same.

Maybe my eyes are just bad in a different way for not seeing the issue, though. I do have some pretty thick glasses.

There is a slight blur, esp when you compare the requirement bubble text to gazette text in the back of it. Personally I wouldn’t call it &quotnoticeably blurry&quot but every nerd’s eyes are bad in their own way ;) For me the problem is mostly the size of the text in SS… my, that’s an unfortunate shortening… but the slight blurriness is there as well. Though for me it also appears in other on-screen texts, so I doubt it’s strictly failbetter’s fault.

edit: also, can try fiddling with resolution. sometimes a resolution different than native can sharpen the display (or stretch it into an unfitting horror but its easily undoable, so no risk here).

Thank you for a quick answer! Luckily, the issue is present only in &quotSunless Sea&quot.

Not much to tinker with, to be frank. My only options are 1280x1024, 1280x800, 1280x768. Is there any other way to adjust my in-game resolution?

It is readable… for a while. I would prefer the text to be sharper though.

You could potentially mess with your actual monitor’s resolution and different windowed modes, but that can have varying effects. It would also be something of a pain to switch resolutions between playing and doing other things.

Hm, this isn’t particularly helpful, is it? It’s not an issue I really encounter myself, so I’m just spitballing ideas, sorry.

Well, you can try sharpening up your monitor’s display via control panel anyway, it might mitigate the bluriness in-game, and if it turns out to be too-sharp to do anything else, you can de-sharpen it back after every gaming session. Takes like… twenty, thirty seconds tops, so if it works, it might be worth doing it.

Or just not play Sunless Sea and wait for Sunless Skies, praying the UI, especially text-size and sharpness will be better, which is what I’m doing… i love SS, but after entire day of doing things the last thing I wanna do is sit by the computer and stare at tiny blurry letters ;P

Depending on your graphic card, you may have external anti-aliasing that blurs the text. It may not be the correct solution, but it is worth a try.

Maybe I’m used to playing on a tablet but I don’t see anything wrong with any of those screenshots.

Out of curiosity - have you tried adjusting your Cleartext settings in the Windows font settings?

I get blurry letters as well, although I’m not tech-y enough to do anything with it. It does irritate me sometimes, and is probably one of the reasons I haven’t played as much SS as FL. Think it’s probably something to do with the adjustments to my laptop screen size?

Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be the case.

Yes, I tried. I didn’t notice any significant difference.

There is an update on the issue.

I’ve recently called upon a friend to make sure the problem is not on my end of things. Her monitor has the same native resolution as mine (1280x1024), so I thought it would be useful to make a comparison. Well, turns out, her text is not nearly as blurry, and I think I have found the reason for that. My friend is using a GOG version of &quotSunless Sea&quot, but — more importantly — it is an older version of the game. Below is the comparison between the current version (2.2.2.3130) and the older version (2.2.2.3109). These screenshots are made on the same PC with absolutely no difference in settings of the OS or the game itself.

The font is scaled up to x1.7 (because I prefer it that way and it makes the blur more recognizable).

I believe it should more or less prove the innocence of my PC in this whole affair. Typically, I would contact the developers again, but I am a bit lukewarm to the idea at the moment — it’s been around nine days since the last reply in my current ticket. I do understand that &quotFailbetter Games&quot is a small studio, and I still adore the setting, so I won’t refund the DLC. Hopefully, the issue gets fixed in the near future.

I am an unhelpful person on the Internet.

But I really can’t tell what the issue is here.

Do you honestly not see the difference? Maybe it’s just me, after all.

The one on the right is definitely sharper.

I could not see any difference at all until you put the two samples side-by-side.

Googling for &quotwindows blurry text&quot gives several results which are all basically this advice: (src - High DPI Desktop Application Development on Windows - Win32 apps | Microsoft Learn)

If it’s something broken in the Sunless Sea font scaling then this might compensate for it.

Thank you for trying to find a solution, I appreciate it. The game, however, doesn’t even load with that setting on.

Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be the case.

I have this EXACT same issue, and it’s an issue that only became an issue after I bought the Zubmariner DLC. I played a fair amount of Sunless Sea before that and the text was always sharp, but now I get the same exact same blurry-ness as what you have linked in the examples above. It’s stopped me playing the game because I couldn’t sort it and it just put a strain on my eyes. In a text heavy game that’s not what I want.

I really hope the developers sort it out and go back to whatever text overlay / font / system they used pre-Zubmariner.
