Black screen on startup under MacOS Monterey

I’ve recently upgraded my Mac to the latest MacOS, and wanted to give Sunless Sea another go (after more Zeefaring in Fallen London).

However, I now get a black screen on continuing the game (well, mostly black - I get what looks a bit like sea in one corner and the cursor is still present).

Player logs are filled with the error:

NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object
at Sunless.Game.Scripts.UI.CameraBoatFollow.Update () [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0

Anyone seen anything similar or any suggestions how to fix this?

And a quick note that I thought it was the steam autosave issue, but removing the steam file and turning off cloud saves doesn’t seem to have helped.

Ah, and finally resolved it: it turned out I’d ended up with a .DS_Store file in my saves folder from the mac Finder and that was confusing Sunless Sea.
