“The customary punishment for masquerading as one of the almost-dead is… well, unpleasant in the extreme. It involves moths, whispers and an extended absence from yourself. We can’t have everyone wanting to retire from their lives.”

What would you leave behind? And what is the price of a complete transformation? Begin a voyage of discovery in the pleasure beaches of the tomb-colonies. Once begun, there may be no turning back.
I think I need someone more British to explain the import of the name “Venderbighton.”
I’m about five actions in and haven’t sighted the Daughter yet, but I’m digging it so far. I don’t have much of a literary background so I get unreasonably proud of myself when I manage to actually catch something of significance in the moment, and I’m Seeing A Parallel in the descriptions of the boat, and of Venderbighton. The Daughter sounds rad as hell.
Not British, but close enough to translate! Brighton Beach is a classic summer holiday destination in the south of England - actual Victorian Londoners went there for sea, sun and possibly even some quantity of sand. Clearly, having been the holiday destination of choice for the scandalous for quite a few years now, Venderbight is offering a Neathy version of this experience.
There’s also the same-named Brighton Beach in Brooklyn, NY, USA, also a summer destination for the locals-- see the Neil Simon play “Brighton Beach Memoirs”. It appears from minimal research that the area of Brooklyn (and hence the beach also) was named after the one in England.
Yeah, no. Brighton (originally Brighthelmstone) has a beach (crummy shingle, but whatever), but I have only ever heard Brighton Beach in the US connection. And even if you were talking about Brighton beach, you wouldn’t capitalise the second b.
Additionally, when I was given the final choice to take The Ordinary Maiden either to London or Venderbighton, her attitude was perfectly clear: she was willing to come back to London with me. However, the available options read as though I would be forcing her to return there against her will.
