Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura

Oldie but goodie from Troika games, still about the only cRPG that tries to mix magic and technology into one, atmosphere-soaked game. Aye, the combat is notoriously bad, and the Technologists far inferior to the mages, but those quibbles can be overlooked. Like all Troika projects, not quite finished and was plagued by bugs, most of which have been squashed in the years since release by dedicated fans. And at only 5.99 USD at Gog, it is almost as much a bargain as Fallen London.

Yes, it was an awesome game, even though it was kind of unbalanced. Magic was so much more powerful but tech was way more interesting. I replayed it a couple of years back with a modded version. The mod rebalanced a lot of mechanics and added high-res. But anyway, the awesome story and the awesome theme made it up for all its faults.

I keep meaning to have another run at it - what are the best unofficial patches/mods? Is there a comprehensive guide to all the hidden quests and such? The one I used to use has since gone offline.

Don’t know if you mean Terra Arcanum or not, Sir Frederick, but here is their current link: Terra-Arcanum >> The World of Troika Games They are in the process of migrating to a new server, though. A good on-line source (maps all the areas, with spoilers) is Mike's RPG Center - Arcanum . The Terra Arcunum site should still have threads about the patches available.
