I tried to begin a new game (for the first time), and I couldn’t change my appearance or my name. I got assigned both automatically. Is that how it works?

I feel you. I have read threads many times, understanding nothing, only to look up and see I was at a Sunless Skies section.
Your first new game will begin with a prologue/tutorial; character creation will be available once you complete the prologue and arrive in New Winchester.
