An Event Begins: ‘CARNIVAL SKEWERED BY RAZOR-ROCKS!’

This card: Discordant Ripples (Mouth) 5 - Fallen London Wiki

I keep my Discordant Law set at Another Mouth, so I draw the red-bordered cards which include that one. Red-bordered cards can be played even when you’re at 0 actions, so I only play them when at 0, so over time I’ve accumulated quite the stash of all the things you get from the Another Mouth discordant law.

Patch notes:

I am now less certain of a Phase II. Wouldn’t discount it entirely, but the possibility seems much more remote now.

Phase 2 is usually for the bigger events where there are stuff to be redeemed. I doubt this one has any. It’s just a minor event to stock up on some low level items or a chance for EpA grinding.

Part two’s aren’t necessarily restricted to the bigger seasonal events or to cash ins — a ghost ship in port typically switches over to angry lorn fluke around the progress bar’s halfway mark which is also a grind a single world quality downwards type situation. It would be nice if some opportunities opened up to investigate what the wastes deal is generally / why it is suddenly encroaching / negotiate to make it stop via a method other than punching at some point.

Wiki folks seem to believe payout is based on your POSI level—do you know what yours is? If you’re T2 or higher and getting the reduced payout that should perhaps be reported as a bug

This reminds me of why I made an alt during Estival 2025: to prevent menace hell.

My wounds are now 10+, but I’ve stored up a lot of wound-reducing social actions in the mailbox. Cash out, reduce menaces, exit and repeat. And maybe stock up on tickets.

The only non-fate wound-reducing items require Heart’s Game and some progress for the Railway, so if you are not involved in those you can’t slow down wound gains.

This event is leaving me thoroughly… whelmed. It’s a cool idea and I like the thought of a faction getting an exhibit, lord knows the carnival needs some love, but the actual process of grinding just kinda feels bad. It’s a good excuse to use my saved up dice for the luck buff, but I wish there was more than 2 options and that the menaces for failure were much less stiff.

Reminder: if you want to play the game of ‘raise wounds way above lv 8 and not die as long as I don’t exit the storylet’… make sure you have no horsehead amulets with you, otherwise your staycation with the Boatman will happen.

Not sure what you mean here. I was able to stay in the storylet without either autofire event triggering. The amulet and trip to the slow boat only happened when I exited. You just need to stock up on social actions that reduce wounds or already have a firkin of cider to leave the boat right away.

This is what I did.

  1. Grind event splinters. My wounds was around 13.
  2. Try to lower wounds with the stored wound-lowering social actions in my mailbox.
  3. Horsehead amulet triggers, horsehead amulet used.
  4. Boatman says hello.

You don’t need to ‘exit’ the event storylet, using social action while inside the event storylet will make you visit the Boatman.

If you want to stay inside the storylet indefinitely, immediately use a wound-lowering social action once your wounds has exceeded 8. Reduce it further if necessary. Don’t let it get too high.

Unless you are crazy enough to let wounds reach 20 or higher until the end of the event, then get into a lengthy staycation with the Boatman afterwards.

Personally, I prefer to step outside of the storylet once a while to do other things.

Lesson learnt.

Ah, didn’t realize using the social action would cause the autofire events to trigger. Thanks for the clarification. I guess if you want to exceed 8 wounds then you really need to have cider.

It’s going pretty fast now. Over half done with the event.

I’ve got my cider so I stay in the storylet for as long as possible, then spend 1 action to clear all the wounds.

Actually, the familial connection between the two has been known for almost ten years now, since the 1895 Election… You can check for yourself in the Waswood…

And yes, having a Cider + Another Mouth’s worth of Carnival Tickets to burn is a pretty OP way to ace the event. At least my alt’s got the Cider now, even though she needs to actually buy the tickets…

Yeah, pretty much my thoughts in a nutshell. I am just using it as a more roundabout way to burn actions into Tales of Terror and recoup some Notability after my latest big Portly Sommelier purchase. I will just eat the Scandal hit and come back.

Something I want to get in here before the event ends is that I think the payment scaling based on Person Of Some Importance status and having that not be indicated in-game is a terrible idea
Reward scaling is fine with me, but having it scale off something so arbitrary while also not telling the player seems outright hostile in how unintuitive and opaque it is - it’s another thing that you just need to check the wiki for, and I HATE those.

Just wanted to add in that I really don’t like this event. I don’t like that it is entirely luck-based. I don’t care to do the menace-heavy grind for meh rewards. And I’m stuck with a Frequent frequency card in my hand that I can’t discard and don’t want to play.

Hopefully the results afterward are at least interesting.

As someone who didn’t know, I’m torn between agreeing, and being stunned at the premise of Person Of Some Importance being relevant in anything at all by this point in the game.

Should be off to the tomb colonies any moment now. Would be nice if society could be a little less intolerant while London is literally being overrun by some new pest, I certainly don’t remember being riddled with scandal for helping shoo off the ushabti. You’d think this stuff would inflict wounds but no, apparently they stab you right in your social life.

Overgrowth currently at 2%, event should reach conclusion in a few hours.

I assumed it was for the same reason that Exceptional Stories are always set in the small number of locations available to beginning players – so everyone can play and have some benefit.

In the past, some of these events have lacked participation because they were seen as early or mid-game fodder and the rewards were scaled appropriately.

It makes complete sense to me that advanced or late game players would need some reason to spend actions on something like bashing rocks.

I don’t think anyone’s against the scaling itself. If I’m understanding Johnson Rivers’ complaint, it’s about the opacity of the scaling. Traditionally this is done on base stats, and that’s what I would assume if there’s no notice otherwise. Choosing to base it off POSI tier instead is new and odd and not what anyone would have guessed without dedicated experimentation.

As someone with 200 tickets to burn (and I’d consider them otherwise worthless) and eligibility for the highest level of rewards, I can confirm that the earnings were good.

I experimented today immediately after Time, the Healer, and thus also A Benificence came my way; and a Compensating Die, as costly as they are to make or replace, was exceedingly profitable in that context. For that particular situation, I believe it was more profitable than The Stacks.
