The latest we’ve heard is that their writing staff has recently reached the point where they have extra bandwidth every month after other obligations are satisfied (Exceptional Stories, bugs, seasonal content). So adding free content is now something that can actually happen, whereas before it could not. They have not mentioned Ambitions directly, but their info on this topic has always come in the context of people asking about Ambitions.
