Just wanted to pop by and flag that the Diamond update to Sunless Sea has just gone live on Steam (Humble will follow a few hours later). Our last update before launch! DBig Grin

More info is on the blog.

My highlight is:
The Icarus in Black weapon will allow you to fire monster-hunters at monsters.

Happy zailing!

The image of firing high-level Fallen London players at baddies makes me very happy.

I feel like the main issue for new players is that, yes, you're meant to have to die a lot before you get the idea... but new players don't necessarily know that. Usually dying in a game means you've done something quite wrong. Maybe it could be made more clear that that's how this game works, that you will die and start over a lot, so that people don't get as frustrated and stop because they think they're missing something vital.

We came to the same conclusion, and gave the Steam store page a spring clean when we updated to Diamond. Frequent death should be less of a surprise to the new player now. smile

I've given the Admiral multiple VI before and noted the oddness of him not giving any Favour when the Diplomat did.

Also, was there really any risk of raising Dawn Machine power by turning it in to the Diplomat? On my end, it only raises S:tDM up to 2 and then caps with a little message that it's over 1 and thus doesn't change, so I've just been sending it all thataways these days -- though I've got to lose me some Favour and check out how much the Admiral gives now.

Overheard on Deck events still exist, but they don't seem to happen particularly often. A new one was added at the same time as Maybe's Daughter's quest, actually. I'm not entirely sure how Sunless Sea determines event frequency*, but they do seem to be extremely rare (and they might not trigger if you have the upgraded versions of the officers they use, I think).

science ramble ahead;
*
Distribution seems to run off of the same numbers as Storynexus; 1, 10, 20, 50, 80, 100... so on. If they are indeed the same then that means Overheard on Deck events are among the rarest possible things that could happen to you, at Distribution 1 (or Rarererest Frequency, if you prefer).
Which is also the same Distribution as... both instances of Mirrorcatch Box larceny, and many other hazard events, like a loose Unfinished Clay Man or a wandering Tomb Colonist, so maybe there's something more to it. Sub-1 Distribution values which still show up as 1 for some reason? It is a mystery.
For comparison, the Trinkets event has a Distribution of 50, and the Campaigner's first collapse has a Distribution of 80. I dunno. Video games.
I think I've found why, actually; it's independent of Distribution (and it also explains the difference between the two instances of Mirrorcatch theft).
The Hungry Dead has no requirements, beyond that you have one Supply and one Tomb-Colonist. However, the Clay Man bustin' loose also requires that you have between 1-20 Something Awaits You. There's a similar requirement set on Mirrorcatch theft; having Secure Storage makes it ten times less likely that someone will pilfer a box. I'd suspected that that was the case, but I neglected to actually check (mostly because the overhead requirements for an event are kind of awkward to locate).
It really seems like every update makes it harder for people who are not good at the game to play the game. Because hey, clearly people are better at playing the game than me, and they're enjoying it fine. But I wouldn't even want to try to play a new character without carefully balancing out my inheritance so I can maybe accomplish something at the start. I haven't been able to balance the cost of my travel/fighting with the cost of supplies and fuel used up for several updates now, and it's just getting worse.

Running around in a tramp steamer is a pain, but Strategic Information + running Sphinxstone and possibly red honey + collecting the easiest items for the Curator and the Principles quests + supplying the Merchant Venturer (unless you get a really unlucky pair of requirements) should get you upgraded into a merchant cruiser without needing to do much fighting. If you're still having trouble getting to the merchant cruiser, accumulate as much money as you can, acquire a Scion, retire (or suicide if you prefer to go out in a blaze of glory), and choose the legacies that will let you retain all your cash. Then do the early-game moneymakers again. Once you're into at least a merchant cruiser, life will be easier.

I haven't had many problems managing fuel in either the merchant cruiser or the frigate. With the merchant cruiser, leaving London with 30 fuel will get you most places you want to go. The frigate takes a little more care, but on most maps, you should be able to refuel at Khan's Shadow or Apis Meet if you're heading for the southeast corner of the map. You can also trade Zee-stories at the Fathomking's Court (equal chance of getting fuel or supplies, but you can wait for SAY and try again, or throw the supplies in the boiler if you're desperate.)

And once you're out of that crappy starting ship, you can use Full Speed much more freely unless you're already significantly damaged, because even the highest possible amounts of hull damage from an explosion won't sink you. It does use more fuel, but it also makes it more feasible to run without lights, since you won't be spending as much time racking up terror.

After spending a couple hours with the game last night...

I don't find combat particularly more difficult. Granted, this is with my Maenid and Serpentine but...

Enemy's perception is better but still very narrow. Monsters and ships can spot your lamp if they are facing directly toward you, and at some distance outside of their range of their own lamp.

But i've found that, just like last build, if I flip off my lights as soon as they've seen me, I'm fine. I can avoid them, or do the usual line up my guns in the darkness and open fire. Likewise, I've been able to shake off pursuing ships who have seen me (!), by simply sailing outside of the arc of their vision with my lights off.

They don't seem particularly good at spotting you once you've fired either, as long as you keep your lights off and keep your distance. Managed to easily hunt several life bergs as well, no damage taken. Basically you just have to keep them at the edge of your weapon range but an appreciable distance off your bow as well and you're fine. The Terror increase doesn't seem to have hurt me that bad either. Combat and zailing takes a little more concentration now and the enemies aren't complete fools, but I'm still finding it relatively straightforward to win combat without taking damage.

Thanks Failbetter Sunless Sea seems to get better and better. The art and stories are amazing. I like the additional challenge of having to deal with weather. Combat is fine, once you have increased your Iron and got some Blue Scintillack, but I am not so sure about removing the Iron boost from weapons - I would like to be able to see some stats in the shops so you know what you are buying.

The fuel from the Admiralty is very useful, it will definitely help new games. I'm just pleased that I started submitting Port reports before I re-supplied.

The increased hold capacity in the Frigate is very helpful as well, in previous games it took careful planning to play through certain stories that give a lot of loot (Isle of Cats for example).

Keep up the good work.

Sorry RL means I am not a very active player at the moment. No social actions unless you are prepared to wait and definitely no sparring or other mult-action things.

No Calling Cards or boxed cats please. Will take dupes on the affluent photographers. Other social invitations welcome. Parabolan Kittens usually available, send me an in-game social action saying you want one and I will get one to you as soon as possible.
Wounds from Aestival's sunlight and zailors stealing Mirrorcatch Boxes are something that were just added today.
Having a Secure Storage helps reduce the frequency of mirrorsnatching, but doesn't totally eliminate it. You can choose to be lenient or to jam the miscreant in the brig, but being lenient upsets the crew.
Filling a box on Aestival has a 50/50 chance of giving you one Wound... although the Surface is totally safe, somehow.
As I said, I appreciate the possibility of theft by crew. It's a nice touch of realism for cargo-hauling. It's just the startling regularity that shocked me. Literally made it one port over from Aestival before all three Mirrorcatch Boxes were empty. Are these zailors doing nothing save rooting around in the hold for items to pilfer?! Does my ship LOOK like a thrift store?! Get back to work, you lazy buggers!
