How to lose cat and mouse?

I was playing cat and mouse with the disgruntled naval officer for the second time. I was lucky in my efforts (64, still some cat) and took an early opportunity to catch him. He has promised to give me my reward in a few days. But....
I still have 1 cat. I cannot investigate a single other thing. Is this supposed to be the case and will last till he returns? Or, as I fear, has my early capture left me (though a bug or oversight in the code) trapped? Will I have to waste 500 glim on a pointless chase just to spend all my cat?

You'll get your reward in about 3 days time, I think, you shouldn't worry =)
And no, you won't be able to do more searches until then.
Edit: 2 days, and according to the wiki, you've used to lose all your cat. I wouldn't worry before you get the Screaming map - visitor, though.
