I'm curious about what type of endeavours people are taking to further advance their character, despite it having on in-game use. For example, grinding a contact to a ridiculous level or raising a quality far beyond what it needs to be. My main one is Jass trying to maximize her orphanage quality, despite not having that much use for Notability at the moment (currently a level 37 Orphanage).

It took a lot of careful planning and about ~26 tears of the bazaar and ~23 Unusual Pails of So-Called Snow (nearly an overgoat's worth of supplies), but today I hit Noman's Friend x666.

I've been grinding up Adrift on a Sea of Misery for a while; I haven't found a consistent way to increase it apart from giving Glim to the Soft-Hearted Widow, so I just make it a point to play that card whenever I draw it. Current value is 716.

Kasha Cairn still doesn't have enough weasels:

It will never be enough. Also, they may have just spend multiple hundreds of Echoes on weasels. Was that entirely wise, when they're currently looking to gain access to the Cave of the Nadir and will almost certainly need those Echoes to buy a Ray-Drenched Cinder in the future? Probably not. But was it totally worth it? Oh, yes.

I just overgoated, what isn't that special, but I set myself the task t pay for my goat entirely in wine. Therefor I accumulated over the last couple of months 1.17 million bottles of Greyfields. It was strangely satisfying when I cashed them in a the Bazaar, although I had to learn that you can only sell 60,000 items per transaction.

I would never be patient enough for any of those ridiculous grinds toward a single item/stat that some people do (though I appreciate their dedication!) Instead I take pleasure in being the Neathy Uncle Scrooge: I like hoarding my riches. Not things like Impossible Theorems but the everyday currencies of the Neath! At first I made sure to have at least 10,000 of all items that sell for 1 penny, and 5,000 of those that sell for 2 pennies etc. Now I'm very near to reaching my goal of having 50,000 of each of the 1 penny items (and 25,000 of the 2 penny items etc). After that, I'll go for 100,000 etc. Naturally. The benefit of that is, when new content is added requiring you to have a bunch of expensive items (like the recent Ambitions updates) I already have them - or can buy them with the nonchalance of someone who really doesn't bother looking at price tags anymore. Being rich is fun ;-)

I've hit the content boundary in every storyline I can think of (aside from a couple fate-locked ones I can't afford at this time), got a five-card lodging, and unlocked a PoSI specialization, with all my other stats just about to cap, and I think the conventional thing to do at this point, with nothing else to occupy you, is to start progressing towards an overgoat. That's a good idea, I think, but I realized that something much more personally important to me was to acquire one thousand songs of mourning for the long-dead god. One thousand unforgettable tunes. One thousand storm-threnodies. I mourn the thunder, and I want to surround myself in the echoes it has left behind.
So, that's what I'm doing.

so I've been planning to go to the Nadir for a while now. stocked up on a mood card, supplies - all I needed was skulls. first I came here to the threads and to the Fallen London tag. I got a couple responses, and they were helpful, but after figuring out the 0 Skull limit for sending out invites, I figured what the hell: send invites to everyone with a skull on my contacts.
post-Nadir expedition, I am now the proud owner of 11 Eyeless Skulls. Check out my mantel!

..I didn't talk about this so I'm gonna do it now but like: if anyone needs these skulls, PM me and we'll figure out the logistics of getting the skulls to you. I just think it's awesome/ridiculous/cool that 11 skulls were out there and people gave them to me.
(I'm...probably not gonna turn these skulls into cinders or money because they were donations, but I did want to record this happening.)

Whelp, it took a couple of weeks, but I've now got the Impossible Theorem, the 101 direful reflections (a real pain to grind), the 1001 memories of light, and the 11 rookery passwords. My 'Is someone there' is only 18, because I can't be bothered to join the knife and candle and farm nephrite lenses. I'm currently a doctor, rather than a glassman, but I can switch back to my old proffesion pretty easily.
In short, I'm as ready as I can be for the Parabolan Base Camp.

... ... Well, I thought something was off when I noticed the name "BriteNite" floating around my contacts list recently, and I guess now I know the answer to that little mystery. You know, I'd say this was a pretty good show all-around; it certainly made me chortle a few times.
And, who knows, maybe Zero will wind up using this whole fiasco as inspiration for his ninth Patriotic Adventure. I can just imagine the title now; John Fox and the Missing Mad Clothier! It'll be his biggest hit yet!

EDIT: If only it would have been possible to leave on the Cider as an inheritance to the new NiteBrite (as in Sunless See)... And what about the unique quality of surviving the SMEN character deletion? So many lost things... Sigh.... Mr Eaten must be so proud of you...
NiteBrite, is your new goal getting Hesperidian Cider and then deleting the character 7 times?

For me, Right now I'm working on getting my 'Approaching the Gates of the Garden', 'Touched By Fingerwork', 'Seeing through the Eyes of Icarus', and 'Walking the Fallen Cities' Qualities all up to 100. Not so much to have them high as to have them even.

Not something I was doing intentionally but between goat farming and now cider brewing activities my Empire's Kingmaker quality just passed 1000. Given the popularity of the grind I'm sure other people have higher but it's a milestone I figured I should mark.

Well yeah, if you are after epa and don't care about specifically getting night whispers as fast as possible expeditions are the way to go in that expeditions at least guarantee a good consistent value. Even then though, fidgeting writer has the potential to be way better (see my previous run of 200 where I made 2.85 echos per action over several hundred actions on fidgeting writer even after discounting item and action costs).
Here's the break though, night whispers aren't for sale for echos so better epa doesn't yield better night whispers per action. If I need 25 night whispers in 3-4 weeks (a month), it's fidgeting writer hands down. Expeditions just don't have the high level of rewards selectivity needed for that kind of speed. And from the conversation above it sounded like Marianne only needed one night whisper. With fidgeting writer it is possible to get a night whisper in as few as 6 actions with a bit of luck. My personal rate was 1 in 5 so roughly every 30 actions (less actually since many of the failed tales conversions failed early on). Still not bad if you need mass quantities of specifically night whispers. edited by NiteBrite on 1/24/2015

A worthy challenge. But be prepared for a crowded opportunity deck if you succeed!
My own menagerie has undergone some trimming in recent weeks. The noise and smell were ungodly, let me tell you. Frankly, I am surprised the Manager of the Royal Bethlehem (where I currently reside in a Suite) was prepared to let me house them all in the first place, but then he didn't bat an eyelid when I moved cartfuls and cartfuls of dark basalt up to the top floor to build my own Gymnasium, so perhaps I shouldn't be.

Nothing spectacular, but my character used to have 90,000 Whispered Hints for no reason other than hoarding them. (They still have 80,000 and no intention of using them to buy a lease to premises at the Bazaar.) I suppose a long-term goal would be collecting as many hints and clues and appalling secrets as possible.
Other than that, I would count the Scholar of the Correspondence grind, and also planning to grind to get a bottle of Masters' Blood as a weird trophy of sorts.
Really not on the same level as some people here, but still all fairly useless advancements from a practical standpoint!

As part of my noman grind I needed a lot of night whispers for the purposes of purchasing unusual pails of so-called snow. If you have watchful 90 you can just do the fidgeting writer storyline from Tales of Terror item conversion and cash out at the Last Hope of the Fidgeting writer. Its honestly not that bad. Maybe one in five tales of terror converted up to the Last Hope and got me a night whisper. http://fallenlondon.wikia.com/wiki/Burn_his_works._Break_his_pen._Escort_him_to_the_Royal_Beth

Regarding the fidgeting writer, I haven't been so lucky. Hundreds of Actions and hundreds of Echoes' worth of resources have yielded 11 x Last Hope of the Fidgeting Writer, which would give ~60 ppa for all those Actions if I'd choose to cash in at that point. Expeditions would take twice the time, but also give me twice the rewards per Action, which seems like a better option in the long run.

I guess that depends on how you define "well on your way" ;-)
When I've completed the 50,000+ goal up until the 12,50 items (I don't bother with the rest) I'll have about 40,000 Echoes worth of things. Reaching that goal is still a couple months off I guess. It'll certainly take more than a year (maybe two, more like) to double that sum which would still be just about half of the Cider!
Also, mind that this is just a way to pass time while my main character has nothing much to play except festive content and maintaining Notability... I don't think I'd really sell everything just to have that Cider on my mantelpiece.

Not useless, but also not optimal. Frensus aims for maximum bizarre, which unfortunately can't be displayed as scrapbook status, but it's a fun thing to keep in character. I believe the only way to increase it further is using Fate for a tattoo during the Feast of the Rose, which will bring me to the current cap of 17.

- Run Fidgeting Writer for a while to afford a second Overgoat - Acquire Ubergoat - Max out A Scholar of the Correspondence (currently have it as high as I can without an Ubergoat / mood card / Notability increase) at 21 - Oh, and cash in Notability occasionally along the way until I can trade in Prize Tokens for a Waxwail Knife. My character, having studied the Correspondence extensively and being driven slightly mad in the doing so, has decided to see how many Fabulous Diamonds he can con the Devils out of. The first goal is 75, just enough to afford an ubergoat. After that will be 512, the exact number needed to buy Hesperidean Cider. It won't be all I do for the next few years, but I imagine it will keep me in the London quite a bit over the next few years.
