Conclusion For the Christmas of 2014 (please correct me if I made any mistake):

TLDR version for best use of snow:

Grind your SotC to 10. Buy Monocle. Wait for advent gift to give you first Lacre. Examine Twice. Wait for the end of advent gifts and Mr. Sacks stories. Go to Penstock Wicket, buy stuff, exit. Examine again if you Lacre fall below 6. Repeat until you have used all your snow.

-----------------------

1 You can get 8 pails of snow + 5 Lacre for free.

2 Some come from "natural" snow fall, some come from Advent gift, some come from Mr. Sacks.

3 You can buy extra snow with about 150 E worth of items and Urchin connections. Or you can spend fate to get more Lacre.

4 The best way to get more Lacre is to examine it with Monocle and 10 Scholar of the Correspondence (Sotc) when your Lacre is less than 6.

5 To see your Lacre level, either check the description against wiki, or set it on your mantle and see your profile.

6 Unless you want to keep Noman alive to Feb (which is extremely hard and require months of preparation), the most expensive thing you need to buy cost 9 Lacre.

7 So, wait till you get your first Lacre from advent gift, then exaimine twice to get to 7, then wait for more gifts.

8 You should be able to get to 11 when Wicket opens (10 if you decide not to rob Mr. Sacks).

9 Buy the 9 Lacre lodging.

10 Examine the snow to get to Lacre 8, and buy whatever you need.

11 You can save Lacre for later use, but you'll need to use all your snow before mid-Jan.

12 How to get Sotc? Do the expedition to get the first point, go to Carnival to get to 3, Spend time in University or Forgotten Quarter to get to 7, write symphony to get to 10. Or you could just spend fate in Labyrinth, breed some rare beast and use their card to get 10.

——

So I just acquired my first piece of Unusual Snow... I looked at the wiki for it, and now I'm totally confused.

The main use of Snow is to get PTPT: Lacre, right? Then you can use it to get some nice lodgings and items.

But all these "up to" stuff really confused me. It seems all the "normal" actions with the Snow are capped really low, so how do I get to, say, Lacre 9? I'm not a correspondent and I do not have any Dreadful Surmise (how do you get it anyway?). Are there any other way to increase PTPT? Are there any guide to Lacre lying around? Thank you so much,

I wrote a thing! I don't think it covers anything not mentioned already in this thread, but, well, still. The lacre fell just as I posted this, which I am certain is a conspiracy to discredit me. or, uh, something.

Seeing it almost certainly has something to do with lacrima (latin for tears, we are probably more familiar with lacrimosa, latin for weeping), I'd guess it has a similar sound, "lakri" maybe.

I went and dug up the tweet I recalled explaining how to pronounce it. It is acre with an l.

It stuck with me mostly because when lacre was first introduced I looked it up and discovered that it was Spanish for sealing wax, so I had been pronouncing it accordingly. I was pretty surprised by the clarification tweet. It being pronounced like lacrima would have been really neat, though.

Just a note - if you want to raise your Taste of Lacre quality using the Boar option you absolutely want to use the Second Chance trick. Check the box, hit perhaps not if you fail. You'll use the second chance item and the action, but you won't lose any buckets of snow. Two of my accounts are currently sitting at 17 Taste of Lacre because I had a lot of snow leftover last year, and this trick ensured I didn't waste any of it.

You're probably better off not feeding any lacre to boars; you'll get some Taste from some of the Sackses, and you can use some of the lower-priced Taste of Lacre options to get back into monocle range if needs be when the Wicket opens.

lacre is also portuguese for seal. I don't think I will ever be able to pronouce it differently.

Unfortunately I don't recall if it was a 1 to 1 ratio. I suspect it's at least somewhat dependent on the number of buckets you had, but beyond that I'm not sure.

Edit: It has been a while, but it was mentioned on the forum so if you don't mind doing a bit of digging you might find a thread about a year old in which people said they gained _ number of Direful Reflections. I might look later and send a message to you if I find out for sure that it's more than 1.

Edit 2: Aha! Found a thread. Somebody lost 1 bucket of snow and gained 3 Direful Reflections.

So thanks to the advice from everyone on here, I managed to get both my characters all three remote lodgings and a long-box each. Hurray and thank you! They each still have a few pails left, though--are any of the other options particularly worth taking, or should I just get a back-up box/save up the ToL for next year?

Hi there! The goal of the event is to raise your level of 'putting the pieces together: lacre'. Mr Sacks will arrive on Christmas Day in the form of opportunity cards - one new card is added each day for 12 days. Once you've played the last card, you will be able to access a special location called Penstock's Wicket where you can trade your level of taste for various goodies. Depending on how far you are into the game, your options for raising your taste level may be limited. Are you a scholar of the correspondence yet?

The soothe and cooper longbox needs six taste. If you have scholar of the correspondence 10 and a semiotic monocle that's easy, but if you're early on, you'll need to plan a bit more. You can raise your taste of lacre by using pails of so called snow - you'll have got one from the advent calendar, and you'll get an extra one each week by clearing the snow from your path through the 'snowbound' storylet. You should wind up with 4 or 5 buckets by the time the holiday ends. Without a monocle, the best approach is to dip a soul in your buckets until you reach 5 taste (after this it will not raise your taste further), then play through the Mr Sacks cards. Several of the cards can raise your taste level; you can see which, and what equipment you need (if any) by following the link in the first post of the 'Christmas In The Neath' thread to the 'guide to the 12 days'. These extra points will take you to 6 taste (or higher), allowing you to get your longbox.

Hope that helps!

As a very new PoSI, I'm a bit lost as to how to approach Sacksmas (most of the advice listed here is a bit out of my league.) I have 5 pails of snow, but not enough SotC to safely grind with the Monocle, and probably not enough time to change that. What should I do to get the most out of what I have? I love the look of the Zhell, but I'm not sure if even that's too much to hope for. I also wanted to go with the Duchess after reading the rewards for each faction, but lots of people here seem to be saying it's more important to get a Dreadful Surmise. So now I just don't know! Any advice?

If all you want is a 3-card remote place, then don't worry. Advent calendar + Mr. Sacks is enough to get your Lacre to 3. (You many want to check the wiki for Mr. Sacks, though.)

If you want a 5-card place, you can do it without the Surmise, but you'll need a bit of luck and planning. Raise your Lacre to 2 by Advent Calendar and Mr. Sacks, grind your Sotc to 7 (relatively easy, grind to 3 in Carnival, then keep visiting Forgotten Quarter), then examine and pray. You should have 5 piles, which should give a very high chance to succeed twice at least (too lazy to calculate the actual probability).

Well, we think we know what would happen. Firstly, if you provide the noman enough quirks, he can give you a reward before he dies, but you can do that with cards before he needs feeding. In fact I seem to recall that if you ended up feeding him more than once or twice the total reward was worth less than the action and material cost. Can't be sure on that one.

Secondly, there was an option when Mrs Clevermont was dishing out tattoos at the end of the feast where you could get a noman tattoo, if you had a living noman. The option specifically mentioned that there was no physical reward for this, just lore.

So if I wanted to try again, I'd have to commit, at best guess, 5k echoes of tears to keep the noman alive long enough, then 50 fate (IIRC) to get rid of my tattoo (that I actually like), and then I'd be able to chose to get the noman tattoo.

To be honest, there's not much cachet in getting the noman tattoo because anyone can get it with a little luck (there was an option to get a random tattoo, that presumably included the noman one). So I'd probably want to pay another 50 fate to get my old tattoo back afterwards. So I'll probably not bother. I'll happily cheer on anyone who does do it, though.

Well, I am keeping an Urchins card in my deck. I am thinking the moment they start selling snow is the moment your lodgings will start getting snowed.
What I am wondering is whether there will be new gifts from the Masters this year.

Wait, if the price of Lacre is increasing, does that mean it's getting...rarer?
Does this mean there is less Lacre this year than last?
Is the Bazaar becoming less able to draw upon it's sadness? Has London become too banal to draw forth as much melancholy as once it did?
If so, will the Bazaar be able to hold off the Stone Pigs for much longer?
Or will the Masters seek out a new city, with new sadnesses, before that can happen?

    Thoughts?

So my best chance is Examine * 2 + Wait for Mr. Sacks?
Last year one of the advent gifts was a level of Putting the Pieces Together: the Taste of Lacre, so if that one returns you might be able to add it to your calculation.

The second best thing to do with An Unusual Pail of So-Called Snow is to Dip a soul in it. Do that up to level 5, then get the rest of the points from the Mr Sacks story and it should be enough for at least one 5-card lodgings upgrade. Assuming that Mr Sacks is as generous with points as last year. I looked at my old screenshots, and I went from 15 to 20 by carefully studying the wiki before making my choices. Ain't I a stinker? wink

Another one of the advent gifts last year was a temporary return of the Smuggler's Lamp code/story, which I played when I started out, as it was the Sunless Sea Kickstarter that brought me here. In that story you should be able to get a Dreadful Surmise, and then lose all your Hard-Earned Lessons (because failure is unacceptable) by trying to feed expensive pails of lacre to wild boars. Like I did to get to level 15. I didn't know that getting that high level in Taste of Lacre was rather pointless, and that to maximise my points I should have kept those pails and examined them with my monocle after spending levels, and only fed a few to the boars to get to the necessary levels above 5-7.

And that's why I only got two of the 5-card lodgings. And this year I'm not even sure if I want the third one, considering that I could perhaps get some Tears of the Bazaar instead. But what if there will be further upgrades that build on existing upgrades, but have stricter requirements that I might not be willing to fulfil for the two I have, but for the third I would? Better safe than sorry? Maybe...

EDIT: Turns out that upgrading to 5-card lodgings doesn't just require Notability 3, but actually costs 3 levels of Notability. And my Notability is too high for me to throw away all those CPs of Making Waves just to be 'safe'.

I'd like to take a moment to ask for your well wishes. Because, if I am lucky, I can nab a Spire Emporium and a Brass Sanctum tomorrow. I've got 10 Taste and 3 Buckets, so If I get an Emporium that'll leave me with 1 Taste, then I can soul - Monocole - Monocole to bring me up to eight, and then I can nab that delicious Sanctum. Only my Scholar Quality is only 7, so there's a 30% chance that I can fail..... And I've failed 98% success rates....

Oh RNG, take this goat in sacrifice. But please don't take my Sanctum.

Penstock's opened his little wicket-gate! ...wait, that sounds filthy. True, though.

Though I'd hang on to it, since (a) it's probably unique, and (b) if you want to make money from Taste of Lacre you should trade 7 ToL in the Nadir for Tears of the Bazaar (312.50 Echoes), not 5 ToL for 62.5 Echoes.

Can confirm that move to 5-card places cost only 1 action, but move to distant 3-card places cost 5.

Is it efficient use to spend lacre on the boar thing? If it only gives 1 taste, won't it be better to save it for using with the monocle?

I used the boar to get rid of all my leftover buckets of snow before they melted, so it's good for that at least.

Just in case you didn't know: the Dreadful Surmise is not consumed, so it doesn't matter that you only have one.

Say I wanted to upgrade my Premises at the Bazaar to a Spire as well as my Reservation at the Royal Bethlehem to a Suite using the wicket.

I currently have 8 PTPTL. Assuming it costs 9 PTPTL for each upgrade, should I try to get it to 18 now? Or should I get it to 9 and then stock up on pails that I can study with my monocle later to get PTPTL back up to 9?

Spire was 9, the Royal Bethlehem suite was only 7:

Assuming it doesn't change. And I have no idea how you'd get to even 16 without an insane amount of luck - I would go with stocking up the pails.

And I don't think there's any quantifiable benefit to having more than one 5-card lodging (it's worth getting all the 4-card ones though), unless of course you just like having themsmile

The other use for the Semiotic Monocle is that it is the most Watchful and most Dangerous hat you can buy.
Why on earth would you want to sell it?

As a warning, I chose to give Mr. Sacks a bucket of lacre and it didn't increase my Taste of Lacre because it's higher than 5. Wish I hadn't burned the bucket, but oh well.

Also looking for someone who can PM the outcome of the 'Are there many of you?' Choice.

I did the same thing. It's always hard to predict Sackmas content. Weirdly, I don't seem to be a veteran despite having gone through this madness last year.

I'm also apparently not considered a Veteran of Mr Sacks, despite participating in the Christmas events.

I don't know if the wiki is accurate on this, but it only lists the Christmas of 2011 event as giving this particular Veteran quality.

Huh, forgot that Docks also gave a Dreadful Surmise. Yeah, that would be better. I seem to recall that one aligning in such a way that you don't miss out on any Masters connection gain, too.

Didn't the melting also coincide with your personal Time the Healer? I remember Time the Healer once telling me that my Direful Reflection quality remained unchanged, at 1 (or something like that), and others eventually mentioned that their snow melted with Time and gave them Direful Reflections.
