Surface Woes

Would it be possible to ever go to the surface again? I've only been playing a few months now but I remember seeing something about not being able to return to the surface if you die? Personally Artemis is right at home at Fallen London and doesn't feel like returning but an alt does. Has anyone ever left the Neath and returned? Did they come back to Fallen London? Can you?

People come and go from the Surface all the time - it's a regular part of trade. It is said that those who have died and revived in the Neath can never return to the Surface, and there are various in-story reasons why that might be true... that said, there are only a handful of mentions of player characters going Surface-side, and those are rather ambiguous. One is in Sunless Sea - whole ships and their crews can sail to the Surface and back again. They don't drop dead immediately on seeing the sun, but it's also not the healthiest place for Neathsiders to be, and they live longer if they return underground before too long. Two others are in the Liberation of the Night destinies, and seem to suggest that we might manage life aboveground with certain precautions. Maybe.
