Unless it's changed since I ran through it, your progress in the Spires is saved - you should be able to get back to where you were with no more expendiature than a few actions. That said... I don't remember all the requirements, I'm afraid, except for a pair of Bejewelled Lenses.

Yeah, you don't need to pay twice, but you do need to invest the actions each time to get to the same place.
You can check the details by following the wiki if you want to save time.
