If you are a new player, and you have your eyes on those expensive goods, then these are what you want to do:

1 Raise your stats, all the way to at least 150 unmodified. That is your first priority. Generally, the higher your stats, the more money you make.

Everything follows is what you should do before getting said stats:

2 Get a training profession, until all you stats are >70. (=70 is fine.) Sure, they pay less than "real" profession, but they gives + 250 cp in one stat. That's HUGE. Make use of it while you can.

3 Get a patron, if you can. Be nice to them and send gifts.

4 Do NOT convert anything, unless you absolutely need them. Converting will not advance your stats, and they don't give you much profit. On average, when you have all stats over 150, anything gives you less than 150 pence (without advancing the story) is not worth doing. Converting don't help you getting stats, so doing it now is the same as doing it after you hit 150, so it is one of them.

If you have to convert items, always do the bulk option.

Well, technically tier 2 to tier 3 bulk converting is profitable, but you don't have many source for grinding tier 2 items efficiently, and you'll need a lot of tier 2 items for POSI crafting.

5 While you are grinding stats, Connection is better than items. Well, that's because there are not many places to grind connections. Say if you have 80 shadow, you can get 10cp Widow per action, or maybe 60 cp items. When you get to 150 Shadow, you can still only get 10 cp Widow, but you can easily get 150 cp items. So you should get connections when you have low stat, but items when you have high stat. Opportunity cost and all.

6 Try to make everything close to 90% success, but no higher. This way you can raise your stat pretty fast without too many menaces, and get enough items to progress through stories. Sure, <50% success rate progress your stat a little faster, but you'll waste many actions and echoes on reducing menaces.

7 Burn your second chances for stats, rather than using it for stories (unless it is very rare, occurs only once, or failing would cost too much).

8 Sell tier 1 goods, buy equipment, don't sell high tier items (until you can grind them directly), don't buy goods.

9 Why stop at stats 150? Because at this stage, with equipment you should be able to get to around 190, which is enough for most actions; for the few actions that are not enough, an extra 20 or 30 stat won't really make a dent. Make money, play the stories, burn your extra chances, your stats will grow naturally to 200.

10 Start making real money, using whatever option you like (as is discussed fully in the forum).

So, pardon me for interjecting, but there's a LOT of space between new player and 150 unmodified stats...If you're looking to get some echoes as a truly new player, that is, pre POSI, you might want to follow some different advice...
