Ooooh, that is good to know. I adore that storylet, but it's such an effective Nightmares raise that I usually don't play it more than twice (and usually after losing a CP or two of Peckish to opportunity cards).
Another tiny side note: "Play with your Giggling Mandrake" is a storylet accessible from the mandrake, not a card (making it quite convenient; typically you can get from zero to three wounds in three actions, assuming you're unlucky each time). Same as the starveling cat basically.
Also, out of curiosity, has anyone figured out precisely which setup was most action-efficient? I think the IRC room came to the conclusion that's it's Whimsy via items at 5 actions (all to increase Suspicion from 1 to 3), with Pride coming in at 6 actions via playing with starveling cat (because you can't get the first Wounds point free).
I found it far more interesting to play a variety of menace storylets rather than go for the most action-efficient options, but when it went down to the wire with such a short confession period. action efficiency became a little bit more important... I think there are more effective routes for both, but they're items dependent or card dependant. If you have any blackwings absinthe, that's +5 points scandal. used in combination with the sticky scandal, sticky suspicion, and suspicion hat, you save two actions per confession of whimsy, gain +5 cp shadowy and dangerous, and gradually build up wounds for the confessions of pride. Any of these is quite beneficial, but all of them together are amazing.
Similarly, betraying a devil in the devil vs. urchin conflict card gives +3 cp wounds. I believe there are options of similar potentcy for the other menaces, but i cannot find them on the wiki. still, these are good to know if you have the pre-requisites. edited by Grenem on 10/27/2015

I would also be interested in a bit of cat sitting if anyone has a spare. I didn't realize Hollowmas struck today and spent most of the day messing around at Hunters Keep. Currently working on steaming my way back to London posthaste.
Edit: Cat received. Many thanks. edited by Scienceandponies on 10/27/2015

Cat sent, do hurry. I used the toughest box I could find but with enough time it'll be cross enough to wangle its way out of all seven locks.

Thanks for that. I had just FINALLY finished the zubmarine grind and set out on my very first zee adventure. Spent the day partying on Hunter's Keep to retrieve a certain key. It wasn't until I had completely removed all wounds and nightmares and set zail again that I realized my very first Hallowmas was upon me.
This cat shall receive a thorough petting. edited by Scienceandponies on 10/27/2015

Delighted to host one if another Starveling Kitty needs a home and a pound of flesh or two. In the meantime using the "Indulge your hunger. Sabotage Peppercorn." option at Mahogany Hall. It requires Wars of Illusion: Glass, and is not very efficient at all, but it's an old favorite for rp reasons.

If you had Hedonist 12, would the following be possible, from zero scandal and suspicion? 1) Kiss a counterfeit head, gaining 36 cp scandal. 2) Use an ablution absolution, losing a scandal point. (If social actions can be accepted without getting shipped to a menace area, this step isn't necessary.) 3) Equip and re-equip a Pirate Hat to gain 1+1 suspicion. 4) Give two public lectures in the Forbidden Quarter to go up to 2+1 suspicion. 5) Accept a confession of whimsy, losing like 10 cp scandal. (I don't know if this number is reliable, I only tested once.) 6) Repeat steps 3-5 three more times.
That would let you accept four whimsy confessions, using only ten turns toward menace manipulation, plus a counterfeit head (easily stockpiled ahead of time from plant-related opportunities) and 1.50 echoes. Or just nine turns and the head if social actions still work from Scandal 8.

As long as you go straight to your myself tab (or message tab for a social action menace reduction) and NOT to the story tab you can avoid being sent straight to a menace area. edited by reveurciel on 10/27/2015

Sorry RL means I am not a very active player at the moment. No social actions unless you are prepared to wait and definitely no sparring or other mult-action things.
No Calling Cards or boxed cats please. Will take dupes on the affluent photographers. Other social invitations welcome. Parabolan Kittens usually available, send me an in-game social action saying you want one and I will get one to you as soon as possible.

A person with high Magnanimous and Giggling Mandrakes could pull a similar maneuver. Feeding the Mandrake your blood gives +1 CP wounds and +36 CP Nightmares. If you immediately switch to messages and accept a social action to reduce Nightmares or go to Myself and drink some Laudanum, you can prevent a trip to a state of confusion/the Mirror Marches.
It's not necessarily better than using a Starveling Cat unless you have a lot of Wounds and no Nightmares, though.

If it doesn't use up the mandrake, it is better- you can then play with the mandrake for 1-2 points wounds and continue up that way. (or the devil and the child, when you draw it, if you have it in your deck.)

Unfortunately, it does use up the Mandrake, so it's only useful for someone like me who has a good-sized stockpile of mandrakes from Knife and Candle.

Choosing to act on wednesday at the Mahogany hall (a strange hunger in your belly) can give +4CP in suspection, nightmares AND scandal (but lower connection to society & bohemian). 2 actions only if you have enough points of Tales of Mahogany Hall to be able to enter the wednesday's bill edited by Gonen on 10/29/2015

Feeding blood to my Giggling Mandrake was curiously delightful. I lost my only Starveling Cat a while back in an, um, incident with rats... if anyone has one to dispose of, they would find me a grateful adoptive parent.

If you are still in the stage of the Big Rat plot right before you choose to defeat him (or not), you can gain 1CP Scandal, Running Battle, and 1 Secluded Address in 1 action. This means that you can effectively get to 3 Scandal and 3 Suspicion in 4 actions: 0a for the sticky Scandal/Suspicion 1CP 2a of Advertise_a_spot_of_hunting = 2cp scandal 2a lecturing in the quarter

So if you have (or are willing to create) an alt who does not himself participate in Hallowmass, I've found a slightly faster way to maintain Whimsy menaces without having to grind 5cp of supicion:
-Equip your alt with Modish Bonnet and Scarlet Stockings.
-In the "Attend matters of society and scandal" storylet in your lodgings, send your main character a "Use someone as your dupe" message. You can send as many of these as you want and then accept them at your leisure without having to log back into your alt in between, as the worn items will constantly keep him at the required Scandal 2.
-On your main, accept the message, which will catapult your Scandal from 0 to 3.
-Put the Pirate hat on and off to gain 1 permanent Suspicion.
-Grind 2 cp of Suspicion with public lectures or whatever.
-Put the Pirate Hat back on.
You only save 2 actions vs. grinding suspicion from 1-3 and wearing bonnet and stockings, but depending on how many confessions of Whimsy you intend to give, that could add up over time. edited by Luxira on 10/29/2015

I find the lack of cats curious, as in 4 boxes I received 3 of them (and became quite paranoid of cats being gifts).
But I will vouch for the terrible nature of "Attend and speak of... terrible things" - though you need Unaccountably Peckish 2 to see it (which I got to luckily by having the fail result on 'A comfy chair by the fire' via the card "A library of one's own".
Also, an immensely inefficient use of resources to increase Suspicion is going on a Heist - Suspicion increases by [3 - Cat-Like Tread] for Shuttered, [4 - Cat-Like Tread] for Triple-Bolted). Short of using fate, if you pick tripled bolted you'll gain at least 1 CP per mission. Since it also grants making waves if you've made progress, it's at least an enjoyable experience. edited by Parelle on 10/30/2015
