Acquaintance vs. Contact

I just now realize that many people I interact with regularly are not technically acquaintances of mine in Fallen London (presumably because we have not exchanged calling cards). Is there any practical difference between an acquaintance and someone who is just a contact?

Players need to be acquaintances to have private suppers together, and also for a patron-protégé relationship, and possibly also for the romantic social actions which I haven't looked into.

Formal Acquaintances also increase your Influence quality, whereas Contacts do not.
