I want to let my friend try, but I don't want him to screw up my moderately successful "not dead yet" venture.

Yes, but not in Unforgiving Mode. You'll have to enter Merciful Mode and make a manual save that won't be overwritten by your new game!

You can also go to
%homepath%\AppData\LocalLow\Failbetter Games\Sunless Sea\saves and move or copy the save file from there and just replace it after he'a had a go at it
