Well, well, seems I might have buggered things up and not even realized it.
So I progressed with the Functionary up to seeing his mother, then got to talk to him again. I tried to be direct and bluntly tell him about my visit to his mother (my chance for success was high, but not 100%) and failed. This dropped my acquaintance with him, but I got it back up, got him back to 5+ relationship and am talking to him again, but nothing seems to go anywhere now.
What is it that I got myself locked out of? Did I lock myself out of anything? Is there a way to unlock the content? I was enjoying it and it just felt a bit abrupt and anti-climactic if there was otherwise more story to go through after that point.

Can anyone give guidance on the option to Sell the books during the Functionary's 'Take Appropriate Steps' story? It seems to hint that a certain interested party, referred to only as 'it', will compensate you in a lucrative way. And yet I'm aware that this conversational story is detached from economic concerns - but could it possibly result in Connected: it...?

The only option that doesn't perpetually loop now is the Subtle one that ends the conversation.

I now find myself sad that I didn't have high enough corespondance, though I'm not really sure I'd have been willing to spend 5 levels with the masters just to know a little more...

Ben. PM me if you want the details of that option. I have it saved on my computer.
Does anyone know to what purpose one might want to "misleadingly blame the functionary next door", and why it seems as if that's only an option after seeing someone in an Admiralty uniform run off after the threatening note was passed under the door? Is that an option for those who wish to side with the Admiralty? One would think so, but "you're still contemplating what you just saw" indicates that one is not ready to commit to anything at all, and that one might believe that there is more to that Admiralty uniform than what meets the eye. Perhaps a deliberate misdirection? But if so, why would it be misleading to blame the functionary next door?
Perhaps if one had failed the not terribly difficult Shadowy check earlier, one would have had a the option to earnestly blame the functionary next door, since one wouldn't have known better?
I haven't played FL much the past 9 months or so, but after returning I've just discovered I'm still mid Wry Functionary story. Unfortunately I can't recall much of what happened before. My current options include "Make it sound like you met his mother by chance" and "Avoid telling him about your conversation with his mother". But I don't remember meeting his mother! Can anyone clue me in on what happened before?
