It feels like one wants to not be noticed by the bigger fish that swim the neath, and yet here I am, taking my chances.
I'm taking care of myself, and reading the "advice for new players" topic. Quite a few pages and I'm slowly working through it, noticing the things that I understand, and saving notes for myself on the ones that I don't.
Yet I get the impression that there are things that I am missing, and things I will never understand. Quite a large world here, one I look forward to being able to explore for many and many a night.
I can see a list of things I've subscribed to, but no way to add to that, so for now I'm going to add this here so I can use it latter when it makes sense to me : http://community.failbettergames.com/topic6167-list-of-living-stories.aspx http://echobazaar.wikidot.com/item-conversions http://fallenlondon.wikia.com/wiki/Spending_Secrets_and_Counting_the_Days_(Guide) http://community.failbettergames.com/topic1100-making-money-in-polythreme.aspx http://community.failbettergames.com/topic804-an-indepth-look-at-money-options.aspx edited by ICountFrom0 on 3/15/2015

I don't think you can miss them, but they are tricky to find as they are stat and/or location dependent. You find the soldier as an opportunity card in Watchmaker's Hill, this is a dangerous challenge.
The Forger can be found in New Newgate - or you can spend fate to make his acquaintance as part of another story.
The Music-hall singer comes from working with the Honey-addled Detective in Ladybones Road or from a high level persuasive card.
The Wry Functionary is a rare success on the Veilgarden storylet Correspond with a contact at the Shuttered Palace, which needs persuasive 56 to appear.

Sorry RL means I am not a very active player at the moment. No social actions unless you are prepared to wait and definitely no sparring or other mult-action things.
No Calling Cards or boxed cats please. Will take dupes on the affluent photographers. Other social invitations welcome. Parabolan Kittens usually available, send me an in-game social action saying you want one and I will get one to you as soon as possible.

I was trying to be helpful. For static things like "Where do I find X?", I prefer to go directly to the wiki, rather than the maybe-someone-will-answer-today game that is a forum.
Admittedly, this is one of the best forums I've ever seen for getting quick answers, but still.

Lets face it, that foxfire candle stub sources has 39 sources ...
I reckon you should try more fumbling around the game exploring. Make errors. Waste time. Still talk to us here, I'm not saying go away, not at all - I'm quite enjoying the process of re-playing the game by proxy. But I think you might be missing out on some of the pleasures of discovering things as if you are actually in the world of Fallen London, with no recourse to answers, unable to avoid dead ends. Because you're aware of the Wiki/Forum, you are looking for most efficient routes, swiftly. I've actively avoided such knowledge (except when goat grinding) because I like that pleased squirm of messing up loads and then FINDING. I'm lower stats/poorer than many of the other long term players, but - meh - I've played it myyyyyy waaaaaaaay. (I'll stop singing now.)
Of course, not everyone likes being frustrated (how odd!). In which case, keep asking, but don't take a Wiki suggestion as a 'go away', but just a bonus resource. :-)

The Pickpockets Promenade is tricky and it really depends on which cards turn up as some of them allow you to loiter and drop your progress and there are other options that increase your unseen back up to 3. So you just need to be lucky and only progress using the cards that give lots of trophies while taking advantage of the ones that allow you to stay there longer.

Personally I would recommend using Professional Perks to get Trade Secrets. You get stat gains, second chances and ways to reduce menaces in game but Trade Secrets are only available this way.
It is a long time since I played any of the seduction storylets but as far as I remember they are all pretty similar with some differences to the stories you see.

have you played the Curate and his Sister? It looks like you can get candles there while raising your investigating, it is a low level persuasive storylet in Veilgarden

You can still become a Trickster - you just need to use the Urchins not Hell.
All of the profession items at that tier give the same total of stats but for other stats and in different slots - pets, hats or weapons
Edit to add actually they are all 6/6; the next tier is 9/9 and 1 point of BDR; then 12/12 and 1 point of BDR unless you are taking the Watcher branch where the item is only 3/3 and 1 Point, there are reasons. edited by reveurciel on 10/6/2014

Yeah, the Talkative LB is extremely useful, despite the fact that in practical terms he's the most harmful item in the game short of something that reduces your CP or raises Menaces. If nothing else, you can hunt Impossible challenges that won't raise your Menaces--even on a failure, an Impossible challenge will give you more CP than succeeding on a Chancy or Very Chancy challenge would.

You need to be in the Flit and have robbed one of two possible places to get Master Thief.

Rather the opposite. Make sure you do that story before doing a certain other story.

The only major areas that're locked out later on by doing storylines are the University and the Court storylines once you finish them, at least that I can remember.
(Well and progression content that's tied to stat levels, but most of that is single storylets, so)

Not those stories but another one about rats.
Sorry can't answer your questions about the forum, but that unread topics thing is annoying. The only time I get it back to 0 is when I clear my cache and cookies.

There's a thread in these forums where people ranked the Fate-locked content on how relevant/interesting/rewarding they thought it was: http://community.failbettergames.com/topic87-fatelocked-content.aspx At least for the first few posts.

Sadly I mean the ones that ask you to send a message to somebody on the surface, ones that specifically say somebody /not/ playing.
Those usually give you some little reward. They're mainly there for recruiting purposes.

Thank you.
Does it require that they actually join? I get it just for bothering them?
You get something just for sending the invitation, Failbetter have changed the rewards recently and I can't remember exactly what you get for each option. The person you send it to doesn't have to join but if they do you get a little bonus.
You can always set up another email to use for invitations so you don't bother/spam any of your RL friends.
