To clarify, 'can' I buy fate with actual money, or can I only unlock it through certain storylets?
If I can actually buy with money, can someone enlighten me on how I'd be able to? I only know how to buy nex

The only functional difference between Fate and Nex is that Fate is a resource limited to use in Fallen London only, while Nex could be used in other StoryNexus games.
If you have, for example 7 Fate and 100 Nex and make a purchase that costs 15 Fate, you will end up with 0 Fate and 92 Nex, as Fate is spent first. Also if you use the "A Gift of Great Fate" option, the recipient will always gain it as Fate, not Nex.
