Message areas are terribly narrow to read.

I see this in a couple places at least.
The longer informational tidbits on the right side of the page are more like small essays. It's very difficult to read that much constantly scrolling through a very narrow column.
I often like to send a message straight along with a social action, and I have seen many others do the same. When these messages are long, the space for those messages also forces an endless amount of scrolling from side to side.
Is there any way these message fields could be made wider? Or perhaps pop out into a wider box when you read them?
