I was just wondering, do the updates effect current save games, or must one start over to make use of the changes? Thanks for your time!

You can continue a save. (This wasn't always so, but FBG has stated that they do not think this will be required any more.)
That's no guarantee that something might not go awry, though; bugs do not care what the developers promise, after all.
