No Engine Required?

Bug or feature - I'm undecided - but I can explore quite happily without an engine *installed* in my boat (in other words, there is one in my hold, gathering dust). The game does seem to acknowledge this fact as there is an appreciable effect on fuel consumption. So am i paddling my paddle steamer?

The engines you buy and use in your ship simply add a bonus to speed, same with weapons and iron. The upgrades we install simply supplement the most basic attachments to the ship.
