I forgot but does the Kitten in Fallen London do anything for Sunless Sea? (don't get me wrong, I love my kitten but I'm just wondering if it's like the Panther.)

Those Pirate Frigates were a lot easier to kill than he war trimarian (yes, I had to try :P). the war trimarian was spamming potent flares all over the place then evading. The pirate frigate at least used normal flares.

I don't think it has a use yet. You can buy one from the forgotten quarter, so I guess it'll have one soon.
In terms of upgrading ships, what should I go for first? I wanted the corvette, but 30 hold is really small...

Good thing it doesn't take up hold space then.
Also I wouldn't recommend getting one from the FQ as it will permanently damage all your stats better to
get one from exploring the Citadel at Godfall
As for ships I'd go for the merchant to help raise echoes for dreadnought faster.

The Merchant Ship is a sizable upgrade in terms of every ship statistic. Me? I am aiming to acquire a Dreadnought with my Steamer.

I fyou've played with it in Fallen London until you get the message about gaining a metaquality and them "get New Stories" in Sunless Sea, it should be available upon the start of a new game.
I can't say for certain, as I've managed to not die yet after theoretically unlocking it in Sunless Sea.

Thanks for the advice. I'll go for a merchant ship then.
Also, I currently have the 2000 echo engine (the venderbight RNG gods hate me...I got the item just after I bought the engine) - should I invest in the 5000 one, downgrade to the serpentine when I get it for fuel efficiency, or keep what I have? (I would get the 5000 after a new ship probably).

I'm not really asking for advice here, but I need to vent. (I mean, I'll take advice, my point is that I'm ranting, not giving feedback to devs here.)
I just had a success roll for gathering scintillac that gave me one scintillac and 20 terror. With success like that, who needs failure??? This kicked me into the danger zone for returning to London with over 50 terror, and I already have nightmares. I decided to risk hunting some bound sharks so I could turn in the trophies for terror reduction, despite not being really confident. The first couple of sharks went okay, but the third took a big chomp out of my hull. The supplies from the sharks would have offset the hull repairs, except that I had for once remembered to buy fuel in Mt. Palmerston, so I had no free hull space and had to dump them Yes, I know that bound sharks can be used to repair hulls. But I didn't have much opportunity, since my hull was at full until the final shark, and iirc there's a terror cost as well. Sigh...

I know what you meant about the scintillac. On one trip I stopped by Port Cecil succeded on the skill check and ended up with 1 hunk of it and 19 terror. On the way back I try again because I am sometimes an idiot. Result failed skill check gained 2 chunks and 4 terror.

Yeah, the scintillac success/fail thing is weird. sometimes failure seems to hurt less.

So I upgraded my ship but now I can't hire anymore crew and am stuck at half-speed. What should I do?

Save (undock and dock again to autosave) and quit completely out of the game.
Sometimes it gets buggy and doesn't refresh your crew limit until you fire up the program anew.

I've heard that lifebergs need to be within 40 meters to use crush on you.
I've only fought lifebergs once, but it might corroborate this.
I was zailing for Whither, hugging the coast, and some lifebergs were haunting the archway, as they do. One was coming towards me, trapping me between it and the shore. I reckoned I would make it past. I did, but then a weird glitch decided that less than a ships length away equals contact, and so the fight was joined. All I wanted to do was flee, and so I just fled over and over. The lifeberg's mirrors are clearly better than my veils: it lit me up like a Christmas tree. But it never attacked. Eventually I gave up on fleeing, hit it with a flare and flensed it. It was a strangely easy fight.
I wonder if all of its attacks require a closer distance than my constant fleeing allowed. If so, that would be an effective life-berg strategy. edited by heresiarch on 7/11/2014

Yep, they need to be 40 or less. Also remember that only a small part of icebergs are above water, so possibly it hits the bottom of your ship?

Well from the text lore Lifebergs have mouths. I always assumed that at 40 meters and closer it could just open it's jaws and crush you. It is a giant living iceberg after all. They're also related to Mt. Nomad judging from the infro from Observations.

Yeah lifebergs are incredibly easy to farm right out the door. On new characters, I buy a little extra fuel and go up past vendorblight (dropping off colonists ofc) then up to whither (might as well dock for the 20 echo report) and farm bergs. Not only do you get a guaranteed zee story (the alarming scholar will give you 10 echos for each) but a mystery crate. It can be anything from one fuel to a relic worth 100 echos... usually you get a trade item worth 50-60 (or 5 supplies and terror reduction from peaches ). You can easily hang around and kill 5-6 of them with starting equipment. If nothing else this gives you enough echoes to make vendorblight runs with a full hold of mushroom wine.
For the actual fights, as has been said they have to be at least 40 meters to kill you, thus you can completely ignore your own illumination and just use the "flee" option. This is not only quicker than evasion (5 Vs 6 seconds), but always puts you back 10m. The icebergs can only use the 8 second "seek" Also, if they are in the middle of casting "crush" when your flee pushes you back to 50m, the crush will get canceled. Thus you can safely outmanuever the lifebergs! Just alternate an action/flee off and on. Sometimes the lifeberg will use 2 seeks in a row (even when its at 40m already), and sometimes the timing gets thrown off... so keep an eye on it and don't get caught in a crush you aren't about to flee from! Also there are sometimes 3-5 second delays after you cause the 'berg to cancel an attack, you can get in 2 actions before a flee. Otherwise, alternating the 100 illumination salvo (7 seconds?) and a flee works wonders for mincing them.
The bergs are also worth 15 fragments for observing them. If you feel like prolonging the battle, you can safely gain those 15 relics every time with no chance of damage (or terror gain, lifebergs don't scream at you).
