The only cook recruit is the bandaged poissoner in venderbright.

The magician does have a storyline: Do you have supplies? Is he a Genial magician or an urbane one?

1)Magician needs things, but does not tell you what things he needs. Which is not very rational of him. As I heard it, you need to get an event in the Tomb Colonies to continue his story.

5)There is an event in, again, the Tomb Colonies that will introduce you to a Cook.

I thought that you didn't use fuel and supplies when you were in dock. Actually I'm sure that was a bug that got squashed earlier but maybe I just didn't notice it before the latest update. But if it is a bug it needs fixing ASAP.

AFAIK, you still consume supplies while docked, even if your engine isn't running.

The Blind Bruiser gives me 1000e to pick up souls, which is coincidentally the exact amount I need to buy a mansion and retire into the sunset. :P

That will buy you a townhouse, not a mansion. And it's of little use without a will to pass it on to your next character. I suppose if you want to scrap one character just to start with the Townhouse, that's doable. Be kinda funny if the Blind Bruiser's debt carried over to your next character.

For me all combat looks likes this
1)Do X flares to increase visibility
2)Do Y shots to kill the enemy

This is basically ALL you need to do once your Irons is up near 100. I've taken down the 100 Hull Khanate Ships with just my little tramp steamer....because my Irons score can kill them in 2 to 3 hits. And all it takes to hit 100 Irons is the starting background, two good weapons and a gunnery officer.

Does the Khanate exist in the current game?
I have sailed nearly everywhere looking for it and can't progress without it.....

Yes, sail east-northeast from Pigmote to reach Khan's Glory/Khan's Heart. East-Southeast from there is Khan's Shadow.

The Guinea Page has some <br> tags showing on his description. How dreadfully embarrassing for them!

Also:
You can still invite a Cavy on board despite betraying them. Seems a little odd.
Also, bravo on Station III. The depth of the storylets is startling. If more ports eventually have storylets of that caliber, this game will remain eminently playable for a long time.

Wow, music playback is getting really whacked out. Having the Fallen London and Venderblight themes playing over each other, and then both through the combat music as well.

I like the content but one thing I didn't quite like about the Acolyte's story mechanic is that when it triggers, it hits you all at once. I think it would give me more incentive to go there if it unfolded over several visits/several levels of earning her favour.

Yeah, the ending for it can actually be triggered and used long before at least one of the storlyets becomes available. Might pay to move that up a notch in the food chain. Might also be worth tinkering with the "Getting to Know..." increases so it's paced better.

Also "On the one hand, devils pay better than the merchants of the Wolfstack Docks..."

In fact, they don't. Brass Embassy pays 40 for a crate of souls, but the merchants will give me 60.

Is Khan's Shadow currently active? I've found it, but it currently says it will open in the Corsair's Gold release - which is what we're on, isn't it? Have my updates gone weird?

I guess they didn't manage to complete that bit of the world as it doesn't appear to be live yet, hopefully soon.

Has anyone else found beasties outside of where you expect? I've come across an Angler Crab in the bay just north of the Canal; Albino Morays seem to be coming slightly further south and the most unexpected an Elder Crab right in the entrance to the dock at Gaider's Mourn.

I'm not complaining as I like fighting beasties and am strong enough to do so but if I didn't have the ability to beat them coming across something as tough as an Elder Crab in a normally mid zone area would have been a killer.

Edit for typo and also to add - it doesn't help that Elder and Angler Crabs look much the same and if I hadn't got a light on it before we made contact it would have been a huge surprise to be fighting twice as strong as expected.

Sorry RL means I am not a very active player at the moment. No social actions unless you are prepared to wait and definitely no sparring or other mult-action things.

No Calling Cards or boxed cats please. Will take dupes on the affluent photographers. Other social invitations welcome. Parabolan Kittens usually available, send me an in-game social action saying you want one and I will get one to you as soon as possible.

We had to hustle to get everything lined up for the Steam release - and then our unexpected success caused havoc, and we've been running around all week trying to catch up. We're back on the content train now (cf yesterday's release), but we'll probably have to reorganise the road-map a bit.

Alexis, not sure if you've seen it already, or if it's useful, but someone has done a Let's Play of SS over on Steam smile http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=279676079

There's more than one episode (it's all up on Youtube) I only watched the first one, but it's interesting to see the game played by someone with zero Fallen London experience. They make several erroneous assumptions when they start out about various things that I imagine wouldn't be uncommon (that sailing close to islands is dangerous because rocks, that the light ships are enemies, that the Pneumatic Rat-Sender shoots rats...) and also makes a few valid points about how someone without the background lore might get a bit lost. They also seem to think that most of the game content is already in except for endgame stuff, which is unfortunate.

Anyway, like I said, it might be old feedback, you may have seen it, or it might not be helpful. But I figured others might be interested too smile

Hello Alexis! Thanks for the personal answer. Your Greenlight success is entirely deserved!

Having spent the weekend immersed in Sunless Sea for the first time in a while, I'm very excited about the state of the game. Can't wait to see how things develop with the further flung reaches of the Zhee being added, and more narrative.

The Godfall story was great ... but is there anywhere I can sell the reward.

I was curious to see how my experience matched the forum commentary, so started a new game: no legacy, no character background, just base start. Granted, some knowledge of the map, unavoidable. In 30 min I'm up to >1000E just from the para-London map - granted, including a lucky Egg on my first arrival on Mutton Island, but even without that it's not as though money is scarce or anything is unavoidably deadly. [Combat is kinda fun again with actual risk of death, but all of the early-game enemies are indeed killable without yet risking death.]

Anyway: mostly to say that if you're feeling in trouble starting out, a few games should get you to the point where you know enough about how to play the early-game that it's just not an issue.

If the only way to comfortably play the early game is either a) get lucky with a Judgement Egg or b) play several games until you've spoiled your way to knowing how to make money, I'd say there's still work to be done.

Assuming that's a reaction to my comment immediately above it, I think we have very different views. As explicitly noted, there's no need for an Egg - that was pure lagniappe; and I don't think that there was any need for spoilers, I merely noted that I could not un-have them.

Would the first game or two starting from complete scratch be *comfortable*? I hope not - that would be really boring to me. If that's what you're looking for - an absence of risk or adventure - then indeed this is probably not the game for you. However, is it impossible to have progress and success in the first game or two? Yes; and - as I noted was my point - if you're *in* that situation and have not yet felt that you're making enough progress, I'd encourage a couple more games.

It may also be worth noting that this approach - die a bunch first if needed - is one that is explicitly encouraged and revered in roguelikes. I do not recall how many characters I had to start in Angband before winning, but it was significantly more than one or two; Sunless Sea is way, way more forgiving.

I'd ask first, other than going to the known money spot of Mutton Island, where else did you go to get your first 500?

This does seem to be where we differ. To me, the fact that it takes several attempts to discover the best early-game strategy is somewhere between "fair enough" and "actively desirable".

A lot of people, including me, have said that the game is frustrating to learn to play. However, that's different from saying it should yield up rewards more easily. "Learning to play" is a reward in itself IMO.

Cheers
Richard
