I have a rubbery euphonium. Unique, but not very helpful. Does this mean my character cannot acquire a salt weasel or a haunted-looking dog?

In case there was any doubt, the answer to this topic's question is Yes.
While I've assumed this for a while, I hadn't seen any conclusive proof and wanted to test this for myself.
I flipped cards in Spite until I had the card for a Rubbery Euphonium. I then kept the card in my hand and flipped cards in Ladybones until I found the card for the Salt Weasel.
I then played the card to gain the Rubbery Euphonium, at which point the 'Flash of White' card for the Salt Weasel noted that "you can't play it if Rubbery Euphonium is higher than 0".
Just in case there was any question...

I have used cards almost exclusively in Ladybones Road, looking for the dog, since about January (when I got my weasel.) This was because it would give me a slight bonus to watchful, at the time. In that time I have still not seen the dog, but I have saved up for an overgoat. So my opinion is that I am either strikingly unluck, or you can have only one rare pet at a time.

There is a way to prove it for sure one way or the other, but it'd be exceptionally difficult: the trick is that if you don't meet the requirements to draw a card, you can still hold it in your hand, but it'll tell you why you can't play it.
So what you'd have to do is camp out in one of the locations until you drew the pet card, not play it, then camp out in another one to draw a second pet card. Then play one of them, and mouse over the other. If it says something like "You can't play this if Haunted-Looking Dog is greater than 0," then we know there's an exclusive lock-out. (At least for that pair of cards)

It is just as well they are so rare I suppose. I try to avoid mysterious semi-legendary horses if I possibly can, they keep inviting me to some place called Candy Mountain...?

Neither I, my girlfriend, nor any of our alts have ever seen a mood card.

It has been incredibly galling that both my alts have rare pets despite me only playing them an average of one candle a week. One got a haunted-looking dog and the other the salt weasel (and that within the second day of sign up!). My main, alas, has to satisfy themself with quotidian pets obtained through extensive grinding.

I suspect so, but it's a very difficult thing to prove; certainly, I've never seen the rare card appear while I've had such a pet already, but that's what rare cards do anyway - not appear. I was able to get both a Dog and a Weasel (which remains my claim to the list of Acknowledgeable Achievements, which I continue thinking of as the Club of Queer Traits,) but that was by winning one of them in a devs' competition. I've been camped out in Watchmaker's for months, hoping to all at once solve this riddle, and the riddle of whether there's a fourth rare pet card that appears there. No luck yet.

I'm tempted to sell my Haunted-Looking Dog and see whether I can pick up a different pet... after all, I don't need the +3 watchful pet anymore since I have a +10 watchful overgoat...
Oh this is that thread! I couldn't find it before.
But yes, I did sell my Haunted-looking dog, and within a few weeks' time I found a Rubbery Euphonium. So I'm pretty sure that you can only have one at a time, because I'd spent a lot more than a few weeks flipping cards while having the Dog. I've now sold by Rubbery Euphonium (all it gave is Bizarre +1!) and am on the hunt for the fabled Fungal Pony.

Thanks! So it's worth a bit more than the Haunted-Looking Dog. Interesting. Perhaps they are priced in order of rarity?
Not sure, but my Rubbery Euphonium would sell for 3 Echoes if I wasn't so set on being Bizarre.

Is there even one instance of the Fungal Pony? My understanding was that it was a joke by one of the members of this forum, a play on the rising (re-)popularity of My Little Pony based on the fact that Watchmaker's Hill doesn't have a known rare pet associated with it.

Done and done! I've collected all three rare pets. The Euphonium is my last one, and the one I'll be keeping. edited by Inpiun on 11/14/2012 edited by Inpiun on 11/14/2012

I have a rubbery euphonium, and the only reason I'm keeping it is because I play the euphonium in real life, and it was too funny when I found one in-game.

one of the best and worst things about this game is...
If we where to file a bug report saying that we think the fungal pony is not showing up with the proper rarity...
We'd likely get the responce that "working as intended" even if it does not exist.

We'd likely get the responce that "working as intended" even if it does not exist. On the other hand, if you waid such a pony was appearing far too frequently for a rare card, you would not get a working as intended.
