Hello folks, Paul here.

This is a thread is for
1. icon requests
2. art-related feature requests
3. questions about the art and layout, such as it is right now.

As StoryNexus evolves, we hope to add a number of ways for you to customise the look of your game, from genre card deck styles to colour and background pickers, to eventually uploading your own images. However, for now, we want to concentrate on building a serviceable icon library for all our users. The silhouetted style of SN icons is designed to be flexible across multiple worlds and against multiple styles. Key points to bear in mind for icon requests are:

-it should be renderable in a silhouette.
-It should be clearly recognisable as an outline. Remember, it will have to be readable at both card size (100*130) and quality size (40*52)
-It should have symbolic value, the wider the better. I'd encourage you all to think as symbolically as possible in your art choices, even when we get to the "add your own" stage. Not only is this conceptual approach cheaper, it adds a resonance that can't be always achieved with more specific illustrations of the action.
-It should not already be covered by the existing library

I'm the only one doing art, so it's a bit of a bottleneck. Be patient with me! In some cases I may add placeholder icons (ie text on a plain background) and go back to them depending on how much they get used.

cheers
Paul

Hello folks. We've rolled out an updated default layout and some css/html tweaks to all your worlds today. You might need a hard refresh to see the changes.
-replaced background and header images
-card images are now easier to see
-improved layout on root, branch and result pages.
-improved text highlighting

Let me know how you get on!

Thanks for all the nice comments, really glad people are enjoying the themes.

We've just added a new theme - Silver Age.

This theme takes stylistic cues from classic comic books, with neutral colours and halftone patterns.

Enjoy!

It's just occurred to me what would add a lot of reusuability and fuctionality to images: the ability to colour existing icons. By that I just mean the ability to "bleach" each icon with a single tone. Or you could have prebleached icons with a numbering system, so "cobbles" becomes "cobbles1" for red and "cobbles2" for orange etc.

This would allow you to:
1) Add atmosphere to your game/area.
2) Differentiate between different qualities/things that are represented by the same icon. For example, I currently have money and wooden tokens in my game, both currently using the "coins" icon. If I could bleach one gold and the other brown they'd be a doddle to tell apart.
3) Distinguish between different things in-story. For example, you could have an ongoing plot about a rivalry between two lurky fellows, using the "follow" icon for both but giving them different colour tones.

I'm no techie, but I'm guessing that you could add a lot of diversity to image here with a fairly simple process. Plus it gets more valuable for each new icon you make.

Fully aware that this may be unfeasible or undesireable, but I thought I'd mention it just in case.

Wow! The art is just gorgeous, but (maybe due to my lack of creativity) it is still kind of difficult to use many for a pre-modern (pre-imperialistic) non-western world.

Would it be possible to have:
- a general silhouette of some east asian architecture
- generic thatched hut etc
- book/scroll in which writing is not shown/ vertical
- horse
- generic carriage
- generic earth mound
- a really generic boat (small kind with oars)
- folding fan
- screen
- generic flute/oboe musical instruments
- fox
-snake

etc...?

Hey Isaac - There has been discussion on user-created icons at several points in this thread if you go back and read. Short answer is "for the moment, no (due to various reasons)" but FailBetter has stated this is something they would eventually like to have happen in the future as the system grows.

Among various reasons = They would have to curate any user-submitted content if they allowed us to use our own images and there's a lot of potential for abuse and they don't have the man-hour bandwidth to do so. Also they are wanting to keep the current art very stylistically consistent, so they are also not wanting submissions from other artists.

Morning everyone. As some of you have already noticed, we added a bunch of new icons over the weekend. We're working to fill up our placeholders and add more as fast as we can.
We also have a brand new theme for you called Iris - a clean, hyper modern affair intended for contemporary and sci-fi worlds, but as ever feel free to use it for whatever you think is appropriate. We value your feedback - let us know what you think!

cheers
Paul

One more addition today: part of the prize for our World of the Season winner Samsara was an area banner, subject chosen by the creator. Here's the banner:

http://www.dropmocks.com/mBmJLc
it's listed under "palace" in the areas, and anyone can use it.

I'd just like to say, it's always a pleasure to see new card faces appear. They spark new card/branch ideas and both inspire and motivate me in my writings. Thanks, Paul. =)

Not a request, but an idea. Rather than uploading user-created images onto your server, what about allowing them to link to image-hosting sites such as Imageshack or Photobucket? Many sites offer free as well as premium hosting, which would reduce the amount of disk space FB would have to provide. Bandwidth, of course, would be the priority (re: problem) of the game creator.

If these requests were broken out into a list of choices we could vote on, Paul would have some idea how many developers could benefit from each image; might be helpful in prioritizing.

Not to add anything of substance but the themes - and especially the banners - are like an early Christmas present. Seriously.

The new banners are fantastic! The cityscape in particular is very useful to me. I don't know if you're taking suggestions for banners but a suburb would also be handy? I'm using the cloud banner for it at the moment, though, so no rush on that one.

I'm finding I'm using the 'road' placeholder icon a lot of late, so while I'm here I'd like to vote that one up if possible.

That would actually be nice and perhaps a way to vary similar themes-have a few tint variations. Monograph green red and blue might be nice. Also a long shot...an exotic effect where we could shift tints within a theme so monograph standard would change to monograph blue at night.

Some icons I keep hoping for - or is this moot now that we're approaching user submitted ones?:

Thumbs up/Thumbs down
"Strength" a muscled bicep curl.
"Facade" A large wall with a door like the entrance to a palace or government building, bigger than "cabin".
"padlock" just a plain one
potion or perfume bottle, possibly with indication of fumes or scent
Indicators for royalty "crown" "throne" "knight" - or stylistically the chess piece outlines.
"horse" - I've been using the mountain icon ironically "mount"

placeholders I'd really love to finally get:
"running" "crest" "suit"

Looked at the Roadmap, it seems that uploading images is behind schedule. Any date on when it's likely to go in? As it stands right now, while there are some beautiful pictures available, there are a lot of gaps.

That question aside, I'll add my request for a horse picture of some kind, or a rider, or, ideally, both.
