I decided to stick with always doing chancy actions up until PoSI, so I spent quite a long time observing this. I never saw it go up 2 cp on a success. I just checked this. Higher end of Chancy gives 3cp on both failure and success. Lower end gives 2cp on failure and 3cp on success. Both ends of High-Risk gives 4cp on Success and 3 cp on failure. I cannot speak to Almost Impossible. I leave further evaluation to those with more actions than I for right now. In any event, it is something I didn't know and is fascinating. edited by Nigel Overstreet on 6/19/2012

I'm pretty conservative, I held on to almost everything. Selling only duplicate clothes (except Ridiculous Hats), and Nevercold Brass Silver, Deep Amber, Moon-pearls, and Rostygold. Of the last four, I will only sell off over a certain amount - and as I progress through that game, the base amount I keep on hand increases. I think below level 60 I generally kept between 500 and 1000 of these items on hand, and if I wanted to buy something particular, I would then sell off excess.
There are some other things I sell off (always keeping some in reserve) that I haven't yet seen a use for if they are in the Goods/Contraband categories.
This may not be a good idea, but I bought all the lowest +1 clothes, and then I ONLY buy the highest tier items once I've saved enough. I almost always skip the mid-tier items.

There's assorted ones here and there that you can use to at least the 70s or 80s if you have some stat reducing equipment. An Evening at the Duchess' Salon/Be Entertaining, for example won't give any menaces on a failure. I got my Connected:Society up quite high while grinding my Persuasive with that.

Ridiculous hat, talkative rattus faber and bottled oblivion help! There's a few actions in the empress's court and the Flit that don't give menace that can be ground on well into the ~80 stat range edit: bah edited by Spacemarine9 on 6/18/2012

Aren't Moon-pearls essential to get into the carnival? Or is the carnival not of great importance? So far I can visit my lodgings, the Carnival, Ladybone, Spite, Veilgarden, and Watchmaker's Hill. I've spent most of my time in Veilgarden.

Well, useful, but not exactly essential: if you've got high enough Shadowy you can just steal the tickets, and anyway, it doesn't take a lot of Moon Pearls to buy some tickets, so you can just keep a stash of them and sell the excess. Though probably the least useful good is Nevercold Brass: 100x Rostygold are needed anytime you take zee on your ship, Rats on a Stick may be used to tend to your plant, Deep Amber... It's a lot that I don't use it, but I think I remember it is used in some betting actions, and convertible items all may be useful. Brass Slivers... I don't remember any repeatable action that might specifically ask for them.

I get most of my carnival tickets by saving Tomb-colonists and Rubbery Men fron extremely surprising, totally unpredictable, strangely recurring fires at the carnival. There's an opportunity card -- one of those Pick Between Two Factions cards -- that tests Dangerous, and gives carnival tickets for a success, whoever you choose to favor. I hardly ever go to the carnival, though, so they're a bit wasted on me. Carnival tickets are fairly easy to obtain (as are moon-pearls, eventually), so don't worry too much about hording ways of obtaining them. edited by Kaesa on 6/18/2012

I like to use the Carnival for when I need a quick Connections boost.
Use that to get up to ~10 and then the Connection Item for reaching 20.
I know I ground most of my tickets during this last Feast of the Exceptional Rose(still have 618 ). I know it worked out cheaper than any other method, though I didn't factor in the Conflict Card.

I wish I'd gotten more tickets during the Feast. I thought I had beaucoup, but didn't realize I'd want to grind for bats in the Carnival games tent so that I need never fear not being able to return scholarly notes to friends kind enough to send them.

Actually, that's one item that I'd recommend simply buying at the bazaar. Lizard throwing has a 50% chance of getting you one bat (40 pence value at the store), 50% chance of nothing, with the success having a rare chance at 3 bats (120 pence worth). Considering someone who can go on a journey of scientific expedition can do Unfinished Business for 1 echo an action, you could easily do any of those options, sell the resulting items, and buy TWO bats.
I do heartily recommend the carnival for connections. Barring a few (Like Society), the carnival is your best shot. It appears to give ~20 CP per turn. The CP boosting item is also great for most connections, giving 75 CP for 3 actions and 150 pence in goods. At 2 pence per CP, this basically breaks event value-wise, so you don't earn anything, but on a lot of connections that are difficult to raise, you'll likely make an opportunity profit, by being able to spend the turns saved on more lucrative endeavors, instead of using low profit opportunities to raise the connection.

So what is the best way to make Society connections? I have 2, though I've no clue how I acquired them, but I need 4 in order to play a card I have.

What's your level? Lots of things in the Shuttered Palace give Society connections, if I remember right, so if your Persuasive is high enough (>60?) then go there.

Just as a sidenote it's a good idea to keep all your stats balanced because eventually you're going to have to get all of them to 100 when you have a windfall of 50 points in your two sidestats it's not a pleasant experience

If it's one of the Learn cards, don't worry about it. You can't really get Society connections until you become a darling of the ball.

Oh, yes, me too! (maybe we are both crazy.) I have a wonderful menagerie, and have named each one. I do enjoy my pets cards quite a bit.

I went through quite a large swath of the london, in my Faded Morning Suit, some scuffed boots. (One does not want to walk barefoot on the lanes of london if one can help it)
but at your levels, i'd say relax, pick up a talkative rat, a ridiculous hat, and a bottled oblivion. They may seem useless now, but you can wear them to allow you level quicker, (Ie some options don't give menaces when you lose, so you'd like to level on those, as opposed items your level which may give menaces, so if you put them on that really easy straightforward option that gives no menaces if you lose, now becomes Chancy/Modest and you can level quicker on chancy/modest than you can straightforward)
You'll soon start acquiring a number of goods and an inventory, as a rule of thumb, anything that fits into the item inventories (academic/cartography/elder/infernal/influence/luminosity/nostalgia/rag trade/rumor/wild words/wines) are of a little more value than any Goods, and most times when you *need* something by that point you should be able to manage your expenses around to do it, no problem.
So relax, enjoy London! Money and fame will come, as well connections, a street urchin with a silver tongue can work their ways up to the highest ranks of society, in time, but you've got to work your way up first with the Bohemians, if you're to stand any chance of seducing nobles in their own halls!
