While I am not playing Nemesis, I saw on the wiki that one of the step,
SPOILER-> you can kill a lady devil, that their scream seems to get stuck there permanently, that they are fearful of death just like us, and that their body blacken and withers upon death <- SPOILER ENDS

On the other hand, the watchful path of Mysterious Benefactor indicate that
SPOILER-> killed devils seems to be back eventually no matter what you did to them <- SPOILER ENDS
-------------------

So.....
Can devils be permanently killed? Cantigaster venom, perhaps?
Why are devils fearful of death, if they do indeed return eventually after being killed?
And do they come back in their own bodies, or a new one (because their previous one blacken and wither)?

Or it could simply be that when a devil dies, he or she goes to hell and The Church actually has it right in that hell is an unpleasant place. I mean, even a stopped religion is right twice an epoch.

News in the Neath: Noted citizen of Fallen London, Abraham Bounty, has acquired six hundred and sixty six souls. Additionally rumour has it that the lion's share of those souls was from a theft of The Brass Embasy itself. We are quite certain that this portents nothing ominous for him. Well, nothing unusually ominous anyway.

About devils being fearful of death, in my own stories I have written of a character who cannot die, but he is still VERY afraid of death. The reason is because while he does not fear no longer existing, he DOES know first hand how much it hurts. Just because you don't die permanently, doesn't mean death is a walk in the park.

Interesting question. Devils seem to be even harder to kill than the men from the Elder Continent - certainly, none of the Bishop of Southwark's forces have had much luck - and perhaps, like them, they do indeed return after death. Interestingly, their demon associates seem to be much less resilient, though perhaps no less likely to return.

I'm no Nemesis seeker myself, but couldn't it be that devils follow the same rules as humans in the Neath? That is, usually a killed devil can be back after some stitching and a health tonic, just like humans who died in the neath and came back (after taking their Wounds quality back to 0 - erm ^^), but there are worse cases of death for which coming back is out of the question, and then the devil is permanently dead (just like a human can be: usually the permanently dead humans end up as mummy-like Tomb-Colonies dwellers, but there probably are VERY bad deaths that only bring annihilation - I'm thinking of complete disintegration of the body, like being immersed in acid, or completely crushed to a pulp by a crumbling temple). Maybe the only difference could be that "temporary" dead devils are forcibly sent to Hell for recovery (instead of taking a trip to the Boat), and "permanent" dead devils just disappear in a puff of sulfur smoke, only leaving a blackened husk instead of an utterly disintegrated corpse.

Possibly if when devils die momentarily they are forcibly sent back to Hell, there could be punishments for devils weak enough to be killed.
As for permanent death it could be entirely possible the reason they fear momentary death is that the only place a devil can be killed once and for all is in hell, which means you may have to kill them twice to keep them down, however who would follow a devil into hell merely to cause their demise... Nemesis?
Much isn't understood about Devil physiology and the rules of death in the Neath and Hell. I will be interested to see if more information slips up with time. Devils may only fear the pain death brings but Demon Hunting sounds like a jolly sport even if I have to make quick runs into Hell.
