I was wondering how the new Jack of Smiles content was accessed... and I just noticed that, on completing the first cycle of the Velocipede Squad, a new storylet appeared: a little chat with the inspector. So I just thought I'd give players like me, who've already finished the VS storyline and wouldn't necessarily think to go back except for grinding purposes, a head's up.

I now have the quality "Your 'The Jack-of-Smiles Case' Quality is now 1 - Hunting Jack!" and to increase this it says "build up your Seeking the Next Breakthrough on the Jack Case quality to 4 and then return to Ladybones Road. You can gain this quality by working with the Velocipede Squad or through taking opportunities to train with London's various factions"

Can't wait to see where this leads! smile

Jack of Smiles, no. Jack of Similes, yes. Jack of Similes is like an Ocular Toadbeast because they both have too many i's.

Well. It's done. I wasn't fool enough to take the knife myself, but I did pay my Fate to see that both justice and my curiosity were served.

This said, I found the denouement...revelatory. It's unsurprising to learn that the Masters' notions of romance are suspect at best, but the Bazaar rejecting their attempt to manufacture it suggests that the title "Master of the Bazaar" is more than a bit presumptuous. Are they perhaps simply the Bazaar's oldest and most intimate thralls, driven to delusions of grandeur?

I just realised that as well and deleted the post. Not quick enough, it seems. I apologise for the inconvenience.

The very one! That's what you get for not stealing your steam engine designs from the dwarves, I suppose.

I went through everything that was (so far) involved in Seeking the Name...

All of it.

...But only because I was the only one to pay the price. I couldn't countenance getting innocents involved. This time it's the slow and careful path for me.

It wouldn't be the first time. I remember something about arson.

I'm not sure of how this turned into a discussion about Toika games, but I approve nonetheless. Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines is one of the most unique video game experience I've ever had. And I didn't even play as a Malkavian the first time. Oh, the joy of discovering an entirely new writing when I did. Found a bit of that in the Iron Republic.

Anyways, it would appear Jack-of-Smiles has some kind of...unfinished business with London as a whole. Wonder how this will play out.

I am waiting for the eventual "sacrifice your constant companions". Then "sacrifice every single pets of yours". And then "all connections". And then "fake invites of social actions to friends that kill them stone dead and burn away their echoes". Throw in a "cook your Overgoat" portion for extra spice.

As for the Jack case.... I guess I will grind for the next breakthrough before I make my decision on whether to become Jack or not.

The fate option does, and I assume destroying the workshop does as well.

Yes, destroying the workshop, then reporting to the quest supervisor, results in Jack's Gone, and some rewards.

IIRC, the Squad is not necessary. One could advance the storyline entirely through faction cards, to the point where Zee travel becomes relevant.

Please be forewarned that the Fate-locked Jack content is violent and bloody. Truly not for everyone. If you are squeamish about such things I deeply urge you not to take that path.
If you prefer your crime drama more Agatha Cristie/CSI then the Fate locked option isn't for you.

The warning given before the choice is there for a very good reason. That warning was almost a dare for Nigel to pick it. He's more of a Luther/The Wire fan.

I really doubt that. Seeking the Name seems very big on hurting YOURSELF, not others. The text gives the impression that a person seeking the name is a masochist, and would actually feel upset that someone else is being punished instead of themselves.

Sounds like you took the Fate option. To proceed, you need to wait for bronze opportunity cards to appear, to raise your Jack-of-Smiles Case (NOT your Seeking the Next Breakthrough) to 9.

They seem to appear somewhat slowly. But then again, this choice really should be something we have to live with for awhile.

EDITED to add: This whole Jack of Smiles storyline has always put me in mind of Tim Powers' The Anubis Gates, a book that I highly recommend to all my Delicious Friends.

For those that took the first fate locked option, how many cards did you see? So far I've only seen three (one of which did not grant me any progress), and I'm almost to Jack of Smiles Case 9. I heard about the possibility of gaining a quality as well (Are they talking about you?) but am unsure if that is as a result of a card or simply getting to Jack of Smiles Case 9.

Since you added this as an edit I missed it the first time through - but I also highly recommend that book! It also made me hunger for more Jack of Smiles content (despite not being directly related to Jack in any way) when I listened to it as an audio book.

I chose the Fate locked best of both, and when I returned to London, there was a very ostentatious ending -- suitable! I even have a statue in a small park somewhere.

...And there is the sad business of... shady characters robbing drunk people. One can "correct" this sort of misbehavior in the Velocipede squad, but the crime itself does sound oddly familiar.

Frankly, I rationalized that my character was confident enough to believe that he would be the one to be able to resist the call to become Jack.

(He wasn't.)

Indeed, Bates was a fairly interesting character - even though I always found the allusion in the name a little cringeworthy (Gil Bates? Really?). I initially considered adopting that name, but Cedric Appleby has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?

A good game, but it badly wanted more development time and money, so its construction could meet its ambitions.

Definitely. Arcanum is a true classic even in its half-finished state, but if it had actually received the due amount of polish... everything about Troika games screams 'wasted potential'.
