I'm at an awkward phase - I am unwelcome at the University, but my Watchful is too low to embark on a scientific expedition, and too high to grind at the Forgotten Quarter.

Have you tried the islands? Hunter's Keep, Mutton Island. Or Flute Street, if you have the Fate-priced access.
