Greetings, Fallen Londoners!

A discussion stemmed in the "Such a dreadful bore" thread (click here) raised my curiosity about what Nigel Overstreet called singular items and achievements: something somebody has and no one else (or at most, VERY few ones) have. Be it a particularly high Quirk, an impressive hoard of goods or a singular, rare object of achievement; to cut a long story short, anything that would be proudly displayed in your Scrapbook or on your Mantelpiece.

Do you have one? What is it?

(On my part, I'm still a relativley green player, so probably my more remarkable achievement was hoarding 19.052 Cryptic Secrets - if not because the Cryptic Secret icon was my first avatar on both Twitter and the forums. But I usually display my Stone Tentacle-Key instead - the second one, actually - because I find it more interesting).

I am so Melancholy, Mr Chimes let me into The House because he felt sorry for me. I made a Master feel pity. That's how much of a bummer I am. That much.

This took a very very long time, and it could be more 7s if only there was more time, but
Behold! One of every companion I can possibly get on my own minus the nadir companion (story lock) and the rubbery associate (I have the conspirator instead).

... I kind of wonder how many echos/fate it cost to get all these companions. I did it over a long time so I'm not even sure anymore haha, but it was probably a lot.
I have a rubbery euphonium. It's one of three rare companions one can obtain (the others being a salt weasel or haunted-looking dog). The reason I put it here is because I am a euphonium player for my school wind ensemble, so I was laughing hysterically when I got the the thing in-game.

No biggie, but it is something I wanted to do: after almost exactly four months play (well, 16 weeks), I wrote a Classic Short Story first time out. Since I used 4 Trade Secrets to do it, it sure wouldn't be worth it from a monetary standpoint (not even worth two TS, and you have to use at least 2). So I have something nice for my mantlepiece.

This has little to do with the collection of strange goods or the discovery of odd stories, but I do believe it is an accomplishment, so here is where it will be written.

After four months of random draws for The Square of Lofty Words Opportunity Card, I have successfully sent a Surprise Package to all those fine folks who sent me a Christmas Card. Or at least to all those to whom I could not reciprocate a Card in kind. As I had nearly forty people needing said packages (I kept a list, you see), I'm rather pleased to have finished with the project. Hurrah.

And now I've sent my 3rd and final alt NORTH (never to return). Therefore, I saw no reason to delay, and my main character went NORTH as well to bring back the Seven-Fold Knock.

A few more actions to restore the Yacht (which I had to abandon across the zee), and I now have the max possible BDR of 33!

I'm working slowly but surely towards being the craziest old bat lady of Fallen London. I'm growing my army... uh, I mean, my flock of messenger sulky bats, one at a time, and raising my "making use of bats" (which is the closest the game has to connected: bats) quality steadily, a few spare actions per candle. No, it won't bring me one single penny of a profit (each sulky bat is an action that netted me 0 echoes, because of course I won't sell them). It's not something hard, just something no one else is stupid enough to do.

I'm registering today what I already have, so I can know how long it will take me to have a number of non-bought sulky bats and a "making use of bats" high enough to be awe-inspiring and to make sure that no young whipper-snapper will challenge my hegemony over bats (at least, the ones that don't already work for the Glass).

Well, we arbitrarily added a cap to a quality that has absolutely no practical value, so your selflessness won't be recognized and you get absolutely nothing, SUCKER!" =_= I bet Ruthless and Heartless don't have similar caps...

I always thought of the qualities as how the public views your actions. Thus, once the public opinion on, say, your magnanimity is really high, they won't be impressed by the more minor things you do. To raise it further, you must then go beyond their expectations concerning your magnanimity, ruthlessness, hedonism, etc.

Example: if someone I know started frequenting a honey-den, I would view them as a hedonist. After a while, he would have to something even more hedonistic for me to take note at all. Eventually, it would become very hard to be noted as more hedonistic until he found an action that would always be noteworthy, which would then, if repeated, allow him to be known as the most hedonistic man in the neath.

I find this all rather perplexing.

Giving capped players even less of a reason to play seems like an odd thing to spend time on, and turning opportunity cards whose only purpose is to raise quirks into more of a crapshoot seems even more strange.

I'm curious as to the purpose behind these changes, from a game design point of view. (From a player's point of view, I'm just very disappointed.)

What title do you have now?

As for myself, I'm not sure how many other people bothered to publish enough newspapers to get Defender of Truth 10. I am a Scholar of the Correspondence 15, which seemed like a huge number at the time, but now I'm not so sure.
For hoarding, I have never sold any diamonds, since they were one of the first goods obtainable in the game but not purchasable at the Bazaar, and I wasn't sure if I might need them someday. Even after they became available in the Side Streets I never got out of the habit of hoarding them. I have amassed 1698 of them. They are shiny and enhance my nest.

A rather eccentric accomplishment, but probably my favorite moment in FL up to now:

Under the pretext of putting a plan into motion to desync every clock in London, I managed to invite every single player on my contact list to a private interview at the House of Chimes. Just being able to do something so in-character (and getting all those confident smiles!) was just cool for me.

my Extravagantly-Titled Tigress is named "The Tiger-Keeper's Wife" and I'm fairly certain I'm the first one to come up with that name. So this is my patent, from hereon any Extravagantly-Titled Tigress named "The Tiger-Keeper's Wife" is a copy and lacks the zealous spirit of originality mine has (unless, of course, mine's not the first, in which case I'll weep).

On the very first day that the Cave of Nadir was released, there was no irrigo cap at 10 to kick you out. Most people left early, for fear of their stats, but not me. I stayed until Irrigo 74, and satisfied that I had seen all the content (that was available at the time), I left only to realize I had just narrowly missed having irrigo 77. I went back in to try again, but it was too late. The patch was put in before I could make it back. So 70+ irrigo was once possible, and has been achieved, but it is not possible any more. This is a legitimate accomplishment from my past, and one of the first things that started my reputation as someone who enjoys stat loss haha.

How many Gothic novels might an enterprising spookmonger feverishly scribble down by guttering candlelight before she had attained some degree of acknowledgeability? I seem to be doing little else in the city these days . . . I suppose crafting the nightmares of others staves off one's own. I've almost finished my thirty-fifth manuscript. Thoughts?

Finishing SMEN clouded the fact that I got a rare success while Laying in supplies to sail North! Nice to get a Primaeval Hint after selling all, but the major difference in the text is great!

"Tree of Ages, seeking me / Take my eyes that I may see..." An antique chill touches your spine, like a finger of flint. For a moment you almost feel you've grasped a profound and horrible truth. The song fades...

I was amazing to get this right when I was heading North! Even so, this text is amazing and I think it's a hidden little gem that not many people are able to see it.

Judging by storylets text and common logic one term last 6 months minimum, so my character has spent 388,5 years in Port Carnelian. Sixth and seventh cities had fallen and he himself is barely preserved by energy of the Elder Continent, and yet still he has no intention to stop.
Now to grind for 7777.

Connections are worth deceptively little when cashed in. For Society there's even a good option at the Empress' Court, but even then it would take 997 Actions to cash in most of those 498775 CPs for 997 x 4 Street Signs = 9970 Echoes, which is only getting close to an Overgoat. (Using that option also increases Suspicion, so that'd be difficult to deal with.)

A million rats however, could be cashed in for 1,100,000 Rostygold at the Department of Menace Eradication, and that would be 5 Actions for a profit of 1000 Echoes, and the total amount of Rostygold would then come closer to an Overgoat. Then again, you can't sell more than 60,000 of anything at the Bazaar, so maybe the same applies to cashing in Rats on a String?

Not a player achievement, since it's mechanically easy to get it, but as a character achievement, Professor Strix can boast that, after all this time, her stats are all 100 or near naturally and she hasn't died once, despite the prospects that she would be dead in her first week in Fallen London.

Londoners thank her for it, even if they don't know exactly why.

Actually, raising Connected: Society is easy, if you have access to the Palace (I'm exiled from Court, so you don't even need that). I attended the Duchess' Salon and was Erudite, which will get you a level of Connected: Society for every two actions you spend on it, even once you're past 50 and the point gain flattens out. For, uh, 1700 actions or so, since I was already at 150 when I started. Grindy, but not nearly as bad as getting an Overgoat was.

Thank you. Truly, love conquers all - no matter the cost. It brings to mind an altogether different possible ending for Romeo and Juliet with Verona in flames, a much higher body count, whole families destroyed, but the title characters standing triumphant amid the ruins of those who stood in the way of their love. Or something.

Well, I've done it: the second-most absurd time sink I could manage (next to cider, naturally.) I now have:

Defender of Truth 10 - The only source of truth
Cardinal of Conspiracy 10 - How high does this go?
Prophet of the Gutter 10 - An unmatched circulation

Alas, no extra accomplishment for reaching all three. And I was so hoping to be an "Earl of Ink" instead of a Press Barron.

This is a very big deal and a rather impressive accomplishment. Dave(Mr Dave? I feel like just calling you Dave is too informal) is not only the first to accomplish this, he is only the second person, as far as I know to have "An unmatched circulation."
To give you an idea, this costs 165 Whirring Contraptions and likely over 8200 actions. That's about three months worth of actions if you utilized every action in 16 hours and used no opportunity cards. That's more actions than most people used to get their Overgoat!
Congratulations, Mr Dave. A laudable accomplishment and one of which you should feel most proud. Hopefully this will unlock a rather exclusive storylet down the road!

Usually I go by "The Dave" if just "Dave" seems too informal. At least that's my twitter account, more or less. It was more actions than an overgoat; although not hugely so - and I think I only accomplished it because it *was* my overgoat grind. At the time I started, it earned only around 10%% less than the best options available per turn in cash, and I figured that if I ground for the overgoat that way I'd get my overgoat and something unique to boot, with only minimal additional effort. I didn't actually intend to go for all three titles (in fact I am not sure they were implemented at the time), I meant to keep going only until I got the goat. Once I bout it however I realized I was about 4/5 of the way to the third title I just kept going. Of course, somewhere along the line better echo/turn options came along, but by then I'd dug deep enough into the hole that I figured I'd keep on digging - a disastrous attempt at tales of terror grinding notwithstanding. It was indeed many months of clicking, much more than three for obvious reasons! But with breaks to check out new content it wasn't so bad. After exploring each new area briefly as it came out, I just went back to a very familiar grind. The biggest down side is that now I can't remember the newspaper stories at all - I have to read the wiki to see what they say. You'd think after seeing them so many times they'd be seared into my brain but instead they got filtered out somehow. Well, that and I can't pull out my smartphone without my wife saying "Are you playing that game again?!"

I don't, however, feel it is a particularly impressive or proud accomplishment - more like I'm the slow-witted rat that still hasn't quite given up on pushing the food lever, long after the other rats have moved on with their lives. Er, no offense to my ratly companions implied of course. Though I too hope it leads to an eventual somewhat exclusive storylet option.

Of course, now there's an actual use for large amounts of the stuff, so that might be as high as I go. If I were a more experienced Connoisseur of Neathy Delights I could trade the whole collection (over time) for 2 vials of M_____'s B___d. There's no way I could draw enough Presumptuous Little Opportunities before the De Gustibus content vanishes, so I wouldn't be able to obtain and use the M_____'s B___d with that content. But I assume it will be good for something else in the future besides that and getting a Spire Emporium (which I already have), so I figure I should obtain it at some point.

Earlier in the game one could grind for Scholar of the Correspondance indefinitely in the Foreign Quarter. It appears that this is now locked and 10 is as high as the rest of us can get, though the descriptor "Cryptophilologist Emeritus" does not change. The highest I have found it is 21 (http://www.fallenlondon.com/Profile/BFchirpy)

I do love the assumption that changes to the system that formerly allowed us to raise a small set of numbers to ridiculous levels without the least practical benefit, which might allow those numbers to represent steps in a story as do most other qualities, are instead undertaken out of malice and spite.

When Searing Enigmas were created - about a year ago, I think - they were accidentally put up for sale at the Bazaar. The mistake was corrected after a few days, and all existing Searing Enigmas were converted to False Leads. They have literally no use at all, but they do make for a nice mantelpiece.

Indeed. They cost 2 pence to buy and initially sold for half that amount. After they were 'removed' from the game, the sell price was bumped up to 2. It's really not much of an achievement to have one, more of a token to say that I was there when that screw-up happened. ("Enigmagate")

Well, the're nothing to actually sacrifice at that point other than your ship. And I had enough materials on hand to go and get a new Yacht in a few actions (took 4 attempts gambling with Mr Apples).

And of course, you give up the option to ever go NORTH again. (but that's fine at this point because Alexis is not writing any more content for this, and I sacrificed 3 alts to experience the 3 endings).

I also avoided the choice when returning to London (A Bad End auto-triggered), by using an inventory item. So technically my character is still a Seeker, though I can use the A Bad End item at any time.

Well, now you know: It doesn't reset, only subtracts 3 for every dinner, and is (most likely) uncapped.
And it fits your achievement list well.

Now I am left wondering, should I keep my preparations at 777, for bragging rights? Or should I 'cash in' the benefits, serve around 390 meals, and work my way back to zero? It arguably would be an achievement in itself: It would take 1,5 year at minimum due to the limited Free Evenings and requires the help of others.

Not sure how notable this is, but I know it is the least picked option for London's Sinew: managed to go full hog and get 50 (now 54) Sanguine Ribbons. I feel slightly sick.

Slightly more interesting, I discovered a spelling error(!) in the journal entry.

http://fallenlondon.storynexus.com/Profile/Padraig%20Cooper?fromEchoId=14391754

"...when she looks at you again, it is carefully neutral - but is seems she has lost her taste for gambling."

Reported it, since I like my rare journal entries typo free. But still, guess too many people can't have seen this one otherwise it would have been reported already.

After seeing this thread just a few days after I joined FL, I didn't pay that much attention, but realized that FL should be a lot about RP and mad goals! So after reading many topics about this matter and checking this thread and Celebrating good fortune, I realized that I want to pursue many, many goals!

So it happens that I found the perfect partner for this and we started writing them down and ended up with a messy sheet! But thanks to Arandia, my partner, that old sheet was replaced by a better and more organized one which I would like to share with you all! We do need to add 4-5 achievements regarding the Numismatrix (marks, lose change, violins) and something related to Seeking (Freed from the name?) as well, but seems free time isn't our strong point! Want to add that we don't wish to start seeking, but in the future, probably, and alt will do so.

Any suggestion, improvement or more goals are more than welcomed!

EDIT: Sorry for the many multiple posts, but I want this to be a bump as well! smile

Thank you! Some stories and some seasonal actions grant CP to this quality so I don't think it'll be possible to keep it at 7 for a long time without leaving conclusions hanging.
Getting it to 6-7 it's easy specially if you can draw many cards per day; just reach Bohemian renown of 10 and keep your nightmares above 3 (my data suggests it's 15% chance out of total to get 1 free CP).

I think you can try to keep it on your mantelpiece / scrapbook - at least, in the past, the ES feedback qualities are merely hidden instead of wiped, so they can be kept on scrapbook indefinitely until you switch it.

Ah, I thought you were referring to the very last part, on Avid Horizon, where you "just" sacrifice your ship.

I've done Winking Isle almost exactly a year ago. Indeed, it required getting rid of may hard-to-acquire things.

I'm still working on rebuilding my Wines stock (so many Tears of the Bazaar had to be sold).

And I think you pretty much have to use Winking Isle at some point (since the cost at the lodging keeps increasing while the chances for success drop).

728, and I don't think that's the top given someone has 10000 Society.

Well, mine is at 113, which is certainly not the highest there is, but I figure if I say mine someone will come to top it and we'll eventually get the highest possible.

I hope to get my Magnanimous up as high as possible, but it's slow going. Doesn't help that much of the main storyline has random caps on it for no reason. "Oh, you decided to help the poor, impoverished glim-sculptor by refusing his reward? Well, we arbitrarily added a cap to a quality that has absolutely no practical value, so your selflessness won't be recognized and you get absolutely nothing, SUCKER!" =_= I bet Ruthless and Heartless don't have similar caps...

Do you have a Clay Sedan Chair already? It opens up an Opportunity card whose second option (teaching the Clay Man porters how to read) increases Magnanimous without cap (I think), and Connected: Society to boot.

Yes, it is helpful, though that's pretty much the only option that raises it right now, and like I said, it's slow going. I am also somewhat irked by the fact that the option on that card that decreases Magnanimous is far more lucrative. Yes, selflessness and all, but at a certain point it really feels like the game is punishing me for trying to be a good person.

Also, it does have a (rather low) cap on Steadfast, another quality I want to raise.

(The Magnanimous option doesn't decrease Ruthless or Heartless though, so that's...something, I guess? Except I want to lower them, and I bet people taking the Heartless option would likely want to decrease Magnanimous...)
edited by Little The on 6/5/2012

Well, I read somewhere (Failbetter blog maybe?) that it is by design that opposing quirks can actually exist in the same character - though sometimes an option will raise one and lower the other, sometimes there will only be an increase, permitting to be, for example, both Heartless and Magnanimous - meaning a complex person, sometimes benevolent and sometimes cruel.

Also, my personal take on the issue is that actually Ruthless isn't exactly opposed to Magnanimous; it is more an indicator of how determined the character is - meaning that a highly Ruthless character COULD be not Magnanimous at all (putting his own goals before anyone else's), but not necessarily; in Mutton Island there's even an action that raises both stats. I always pictured myself the Magnanimous/Ruthless type as somebody similar to Rei from Fist of the North Star - both extremely determined and deeply just in his choices.

It really seems to depend on the individual storylet/card as to what the cap is (if any). I've seen things that cap at 6, 9, or not at all (that I can tell). One of my focuses is Subtle, and the card "A Night Out" has pretty much always been useless, capping at 6, but I'm always happy to see "A Little Omen," which still works even at my current level of 32. I'm afraid I can't remember the last thing that actually raised my Magnanimous, though.

What are you, chicken? Well go on. I dare you. I double dare you! Or do you, deep down in your heart of hearts, find that you just don't have the mettle‽

Seriously though, the Overgoat card does have an option that gives 10 certifiable scraps on one action. Combine that with the Boatman's challenge and that makes it a pretty nifty pet. Bengal Tigresses are a dime a dozen but nothing says "I have the fanciest of pants" like an Overgoat!

Yep, currently at 871.

(Thank goodness I got enough Mourning Candles for my Overgoat just before they changed the difficulty levels!)

I doubt it's the most given that I'm short two Ravens, most of the Feast petpanions, and a couple from Fate-locked content or other Ambitions, but finally getting the Encounter at the Feast card got me to a nice round 42 pets:
-19 purchased from the Bazaar
-9 from Theological Husbandry
-4 upgraded Ravens
-2 from the Rat storylines
-2 from the Exceptional Feast
-1 Dark-Carapaced Crustacean
-1 Bitter Saker Falcon
-1 Unfinished Hat
-1 Rare pet
-1 Connected pet
-1 Bat With Attitude

(It took me a little while to get the counts to add up right, what with them running around and all.)

Not to be a bother, but is the entry mentioning the Calendar Council in your journal the text for when you acquire the Intriguer's Compendium?

I've got one too, and I can confirm that it is

I am not sure how rare this achievement is amongst the venerable ranks of writers, journalists and assorted creative types of the Fifth City, but a month ago, I did manage to write a Classic Short Story. It is the pride of my mantle-piece.

Delicious friends, I must share momentous news!

Seeker of Names has just completed a Race with In The Lead 4. My Menaces are as follows:
Wounds 19
Scandal 6
Nightmares 8
Unaccountably Peckish 3

I HAD Suspicion 6 or so, before speaking to the Savage Sergeant.

I have decided I shall continue to Race until all of my Menaces have reached at least 10. Wounds should be about 30 by then. I shall spend so much time with the Boatman that we'll be on a first name basis.

(Failbetter, can Seeker of Names please have in-game confirmation of the Boatman's name? That would be both fitting and in-character.)
