If I may, why 314555 and not, say, 312345? Or maybe, 314159?

314555 is... well, not a special number. Rather, it is just the amount of Currency I need to sell for an Overgoat excluding the 2 thousand echoes I have currently.

Oh, that's quite a goal!
Currently at least I'm flying much lower. But, my last trip to the islands with consequent research exchange with fellow scholars totaled me with various trinkets, a bit of Echoes and a total of 31 volumes of Prelapsarian Archeology lore *_*

I have officially saved one-tenth of the moneys needed to procure Hesperian Cider. Soon! Soon!

Getting in a little late to the thread here, but to add a few things...

...So there actually is a way of raising Scholar of the Correspondence over 10! How did you get the last 5 points? Earlier in the game one could grind for Scholar of the Correspondance indefinitely in the Foreign Quarter. It appears that this is now locked and 10 is as high as the rest of us can get, though the descriptor "Cryptophilologist Emeritus" does not change. The highest I have found it is 21 (http://www.fallenlondon.com/Profile/BFchirpy)

Seriously though, the Overgoat card does have an option that gives 10 certifiable scraps on one action. Combine that with the Boatman's challenge and that makes it a pretty nifty pet. Bengal Tigresses are a dime a dozen but nothing says "I have the fanciest of pants" like an Overgoat!

I haven't found a good hedonism grind now I'm exiled. Plus I wanna remove some melancholy I got in Hunter's Keep. Any tips?

Also, anyone know who is or who is presumed to be the highest opponent of the boatman?

If it's below 9 then Doubt street salacious copy is nice. Intimate with Devils gives a great deal of it. Cards like On Matters of Love or gambling with your Raven Adviser are pleasant too. The only sure fire way to grind the thing, that I know of, is on the second level of the Labyrinth, but that is a painful grind that gives less than 1cp per action when you consider the loop. I got most of mine during the Feast of the Exceptional Rose in my War of Hedonism with Narcissus.
As far as dropping your Melancholy, if your Ambition is "Bag a Legend" there is an option in the House of Mirrors at Mrs Plenty's Carnival that is a Melancholy challenge(straightforward at 8) which decreases your Melancholy on a success. It costs a ticket and decreases your Dangerous as well, but it ups your Fingerwork to about 16. Otherwise take the "Well, those clouds look quite pretty" on the "Weather at Last" card.

I have 19 without particularly trying. It's just the quickest way to get off the slow boat. I know there are people who purposefully raise their wounded so they can spend more time playing so I think they must be rather far beyond that.

Sir Bert used to have 14. Don't know what happened to them. I currently have 14 and will be getting my 15th shortly.

I currently have 1031. I figured I'd stock up and then not need any until the next Festival of the Exceptional Rose.

Guest Lecturing in the University have a unlimited Hedonist increase.... Being kicked out, I am not sure which one is it, but it should be Summerset-related. I think it is the Wine Tasting (no soulless). 1 CP per action plus something else.
