The other day Flyte ran a bit of a contest in the IRC. He asked us all to submit our own translations of Correspondence Sigils, and the results were so good that I wanted to open it up to the forums. Here's the ones we came up with already, please add your own.

If you like any of them particularly, consider sending a gift or a token to the writer. *and if anyone would prefer their submissions not be up on the forums, let me know here or in IRC and I'll take them down*

Another Limerick of the Correspondence:

"There was a young Market from space,
Who desired a sun’s soft grace.
To show her its worth
It came down to Earth
And abducted the whole human race."

    A Limerick of the Correspondence:

“A sensation of sudden sharp pain
From being hooked at the end of a Chain.”
Or perhaps, “A memory of love
    Shining down from above;
But now, there is only rain."

In response to a challenge from Mr. Flyte: that I should write a definition in haiku, with bonus points for references cosmological:

    This sigil could mean
    "The last irrational warmth
    felt in a blizzard",

    or perhaps it means
    "A sudden glimmer of light
    outside a black hole".

    edit: and now, more!

    "The descent of souls
    from a shell celestial
    to a home of glass"

    "The knowledge that all
Things last but a few seconds
    as Time marches on."

    "A hot beverage
    that is almost completely
    unlike Earl Grey tea" wink

    "The sort of smile
that displays more of bared teeth
    than of good humor."

I just couldn't resist coming up with a few myself. I love this kind of thing.

Biting the Inside of One’s Cheek, to Remember the Sensation of Pain
The Sudden Awareness of a Life other than Your Own
The Slow and Unnoticed Decomposition of Hope over the Span of a Lifetime
The Panic of a Soul, upon Finding Itself Imprisoned within a Body.
The Preference of an Uncaring God over a Nonexistent One
The Moment of Fear upon Waking and Discovering the World Anew
The Infinitesimally Small but Crucial Difference between Death and Freedom
Destruction for the Sake of Nonexistence
The Cruel Satisfaction one feels when Witnessing an Atrocious Misdeed
The Desire of Something For the Sake of Depriving Others
A Lie that Upon Closer Inspection is merely a Particularly Malicious Truth
Kindness for the Sake of Concealing Ill Intent
The Crumbling Roar of a Slowly Decaying Universe
The Gift of a Scar that Will Not Heal
The Light of a Star that has been Extinguished
The Morbid Anticipation of One’s Own Death
The Murder that All Men are Capable of

Also, I'm working on a way to translate english words into correspondence sigils and vice versa, because I love doing that kind of thing. Unfortunately, the Correspondence is slowly eating away at my sanity and I worry that I have little hope of completing my work before I loose my mind completely. Also, I need to buy less flammable computers.

I think I've figured these out. Of course, the last time I tried to translate these particular glyphs I caused a run on laudanum that made three fortunes and ruined seventeen, but I have true hope that this time I'll get it right. Ahem.

"The feeling of helplessness at the destruction of a valued object."
"Sudden, momentary, and fleeting awareness of one's own addiction."
"The reasonable, yet unsatisfying, justifications for an act of cruelty."
"The anxiety of knowing that one's future is dependent on an uncertain chance."
    "Pleasure bought at unsustainable expense."
"Awareness of the mortality of a loved one."

    Sounds fun!
"The sensation of equidistance between longing and dispassion."
"A parting that becomes inevitable, unbeknownst to a participant."
"The satisfaction one feels after a successful lie."
"Parameters that are conceived by perception, yet are unsubstantial in essence."

And one I stole from Kevin Spacey from "House of Cards":
"Pain, of the kind that is merely suffering."

  • "The horror of a long-time friend collapsing into a slavering monster, and knowing that you may follow"

"The guilty pleasure of knowing that those who orbit you need your light, or risk being a desolate embarrassment."

" The silence of distance that makes a momentary meeting bittersweet"

"The absent moment between wakefulness and sleep"

"The tiny shard of night that fells the titan"

"The prideful shame of one forced to conspire with those who are believed to be unimportant"

Waiting for something which one knows will not arrive.

Feigned surprise for the sake of propriety.

The accidental meeting of two unwitting terminii in a vast and complex scheme.

The inescapable desire for all things to be as they were the moment before a minor catastrophe.

The act of betraying an anticipated traitor even after discovering the honesty of their intentions.

The act of betraying an anticipated traitor simultaneously to their attempt to betray you.

The act of betraying an anticipated traitor after discovering the honesty of their intentions while the true traitor in-turn sets their betrayal in motion.

    Seething beneath.

Needless loss in times of scarcity.

A depth of profundity beyond one's understanding.

Not wit, but an attempt at it.

A permanent diminishing in the notion of godhood.

"The momentary heightening of senses caused by a sudden uncertainty about whether one is asleep or awake"

"To follow one around and eat one's words before they echo"

"The involuntary curling of one's extremities brought about by an over-sweet taste"

"Disappointment over something one was sold as pure black taking on a brown tinge in sunlight"

"A dream in which one feels oneself failing to keep alive that for which one is responsible"

Semi-off-topic ramblings: Funnily enough, one of my neglected writing projects (quite unconnected to FL) has a 'language' that packs *insane* quantities of meaning into a single transmission. You don't need to learn anything about it to understand someone who's speaking it, either. (Which potentially has some rather horrible implications.)

The *extremely simplified* form of one single phoneme equates to "The shade of a grove of trees by a still pool dappled with early summer sunshine and the sound of birdsong"...

AND.... for those who asked or wanted it but haven't spoken up - a list of canon correspondences to date:

    https://docs.google.com/document/d/1S9TwcwYp5xyi0QJ5Sesv0jimTVcNq3wFdwQ-amY_Gyg/edit?authkey=CJi3rYQL

I didn't create this, but I'd urge anyone fascinated by these lyrical symbols to bookmark it and, where possible, update it as new content unfolds. Even if the wording isn't a direct quote of a symbol, but an allusion to what one seems to stand for, it'd be nice to have it documented.

Even if for no other reason than delicious head-canon!

it should be noted that not all correspondence sigils need be interpreted in a single way, refer to intercepting messages in 'encryption of a sort'
here are some of my multiple interpretations
"sorrow that which exists in a place that does not nor ever will"
"that which gazes melancholic from beyond"

"the eye that sees into itself"
"seeing ones own reflection not from a mirror"

"the light reflected from things that do not reflect light"
    "sounds heard from other places"
"communing with oneself who is not oneself"

"the feeling of being someone else"
"knowing that which was not learnt"
"seeing into the storage place of knowledge"

    Friends, parishioners, &esteemed colleagues -

I humbly submit to this fine list a handful of the sigils whose meaning I fancy I've deciphered. While I've no doubt the Ministry shall redact from this post the exact form of the symbols being referenced herein (and truly, one can scarcely fault them for such, if so!), I include the most specific definitions possible in hopes they might aid the serious scholar regardless.

*(1) secrets superstitious (fish?) bury in the ears of (witches?) in order to forget (the context of this sense is somewhat obscure; further research required)
*(2) general term for any species belonging to an order of very large Loricifera with soft pelts woven from shed eyelashes lost in the Zee (as illustrated in detail most unsettling in the late Mr. P. H. Gosse's unpublished Liber Saeta - manuscript pages available in the University library with written permission of faculty. To my knowledge, no recorded sightings of these beasts are extant.)

    **(1) a sentient ambulatory mycoid (e.g., a blemmigan)
**(2) the sound a fruit makes whilst rotting, or being gradually crushed (as inside a slowly closing fist or beneath a slightly heavier object)

***(1) the interrogation by torture of a guilty subject
***(2) the conflict of will and intent present between a forensic investigation & a civilization of flies burning the evidence for fuel [possibly a specific poetic extension of sense (1) - as attested most notably in Prynne's 'First-city Homilies' collection, Tablets 3 and 46]

*****(1) a doppelganger, an avatar, ones dream-self considered separately, or conceptual objects of bodily dysphoria in general
*****(2) a contrivance, idiom, or artificial replacement which has come to supplant its original referent in perceived authenticity
*****(3) a lie which has gained sufficient cultural currency to attain the resonance of truth
    *****(4) the sum of a charlatan's accolades

May the Lord defend us all, in His great mercy, who would seek true understanding, from the perils that gird all pearls of Neathy wisdom, here amidst the palimpsest of fouled cities that are and were.

By the way, delicious friends, is there a compilation of the 'official' sigils recensed so far? [An example of official would be the recent 'Forever hurtling toward the earth'...]
In another somehow related note, I would urge the interested readers to complement their study of the Correspondence with that of Aklo...

"One of the infinite pieces of an undescribed infinite whole"

"If there is only one possibility, if I can only accept, or refuse, to be imprisoned until I accept - is that a choice at all?" (The translator would mumble of peculiarities now. Other proposals do not convey the despondent nature of the question, of the questioner and questioned, would say.)

"The forced, but passionate acceptance of the temptations of freedom"

    "Star-Shell"

    Excision after a failed expulsion.

The act of conversing loudly to oneself only for another, unprecedented voice to respond.

The meaty undulation that comes with breath.

The rejection and destruction of the old ways, leaving nothing to replace it.

Asking for advice and then proceeding on your own intuition anyway.

    An attempt to counterbalance suffering.

    A counterweight to suffering.

Bubbling pitch as expelled from the eyes.
